Introducing or "bonding" guinea pigs to each other is stressful! We made this video to show you our process of introducing guinea pigs. Unfortunately there was a fight :/ I did not even want to watch the footage back but hopefully this helps people see when to break up a guinea pig fight. Now we know which pigs will be able to get a long with others and which pigs... are more difficult.

this is perfect timing as my male pig is getting neutered this friday so he can finally join my female pair! they’ve been in cages side by side for a month or two now so hopefully bonding goes by a little smoother because of it 🤞🏼

We had our freshly neutered male in a side by side for 3 months before introducing him to our three females and thought it would make it smoother too but it was extremely rough. There was chattering and bits of fur getting pulled out in the neutral space then in the big cage for several days. We slept in the same room and woke up to monitor every time the chattering started. We stuck it out because we were told if there is no blood it is working even though it was more aggressive than this video when she said no more. Thankfully they all live happily together now but it was a tense three days. Judge your own comfort level because it can get stressful and we were discouraged they were not as fast friends as we expected after the side by side but ultimately became friends.

from my experience once you bond a new piggie. They should be kept together from than one. Separating and reintroducing them for free time just makes the bonding useless. They will have to be rebonded each time you try and let them free roam together.

I had brothers and they were great while they were young. But, as they got older they would fight pretty badly, so I had to separate them. You are so right about the pleasant toddler turning into an unpleasant teen.

Seeing your videos are wonderfull. You show all sides of looking after piggies, good and bad. Seeing a creator clean up their poop, have piggies grumble when you pick them up or give them meds, and struggles with bonding etc it great. I give a more realistic idea of what owning a piggie is like. Thank you

My bonding experience was amazing it took like 5 minutes, So my guinea pig bear died infront of Bella my other piggie and she was in shock she didn’t move and she’s normally really skittish but the the next day I got another 2 pigs so then I had 3 and I was worried they wouldn’t be friends but luckily I just put them in the same cage as Bella and because Bella was so sad and depressed she just wanted more love so now they all play together every day ❤️ Love your vids Have a great day

I’m a new-b and my boys were babies from the same litter. They did great for weeks and we extends their cage. A few days later, one was bit overnight and is now missing a chick of ear 😱😢😣 He’s healed and they’re separated. I totally understand your stress! 💜 Thanks so much for all of your videos!

Oh my goodness that was intense!! I don't know how I missed this video when it came out but I have piece of advice for piggy parents. Pleeeeeease wrap your hand with a towel or something when bonding piggies. I learned this from personal experience. I got bit during a bonding session and in less than 48 hours was thrown in the hospital for 3 days and had numerous antibiotics, tetanus shot, and even had to have surgery on my finger. 4 years later and only half the feeling has came back in that finger. Be careful guys! 😁💕

When bonding piggies and things start going bad never reach in to separate with bare hands, have one wrapped or grab a hidey as you do t want to get bit.

I always bond in the kitchen without tunnels etc, because in my experience when they can hide they get bullied more. But now I have a group of 4 piggies I just put the new piggie in the herd without bonding or something. They are fine with everything xD

I hate bonding, super stressful. I had to bond 2 females end of May, so I got tips from Saskia from LA Guinea Pig Rescue. Neutral space, no hidies to start forcing them to face each other giving a quick response if any from the piggies. I got chattering, nose punching & showing teeth… that was enough for me 🤦🏻‍♀️ I did video it, but being new to RU-vid plus stressful bonding I didn’t do nearly as good a job as explaining as you did talking it thru. I put hay in but the piggies just hid in it. So I took a chunk out and left just enough to chomp on. That worked then lettuce, they both started to relax so I put them in a thoroughly cleaned new cage and both girls still chased for up to 2wks and now get on great. Don’t want to do that again in a hurry, like you say, you don’t want them harmed we love them all.

Females go through a period of bullying. I thought my girls were no match, separated too quick. Bonded again and let them go through the bullying period, then they were totally fine! Female piggies can be like that

Hi! Yes she has had that since I rescued her. She, David and bebe will all adopted that way. They have all seen the vet and it’s from barbering. They said as long as they aren’t bleeding or harming their skin that that probably still barber out of habit. But that they probably started doing it originally bc in their previous homes they were living in small cages with lots of pigs and they were stressed.

An idea for a video is to go to Walmart(etc.) and find stuff for guinea pigs on a budget. I actually found foraging foods, wooden/ twig balls, and much more! ❤️

My 2 male piggies were young when I introduced them but recently they have been not getting along and it seriously stressing me out. I was considering separating them in nearby enclosures but dedicated so much time to the bonding process that I hate to mess things up. They have never hurt each other but one definitely bullies the other more and more as they get to be a year old.

My husband brought home a Guinea pig out of the blue. (Thinking it would cheer up our 21 year old daughter.) He had been visiting a friend who had accidentally put a male and a female together and this was their 6 month old boy. Our daughter, however, didn’t want the Guinea pig. I ended up enjoying him and through You Tube immediately learned he (Buckey) needed a buddy. I ended up having a bonding session just like you did here. I even bathed them the day before. Things didn’t go well at first. It was soooo stressful for the first hour or so. The BABY (Cedric) was chasing and humping Buckey! I didn’t have hidies in the area at first, but once I added them, they did really well together and have for the past six months.

Same as me. They have a great home with lots of space but I can't leave them alone together as I'd hoped because they were fighting. With the fence between them they sit and eat together and talk, so I'm thinking they're happy xx

I have 4 guineas, 3 are a bonded little pack and 1 is in a cage right next to them, my guineas seem to be interested in meeting the new male. I seriously hope they all get along.

I have a guinea pig that doesn't get along with other guinea pigs we tryed tons of baby guinea pigs and he's technically beaten them up so yeah bonding can go really bad

I have 2 males, it was easy bonding them because I got Freddie at a pet store and was bonded to other Guinea pigs and then Dexter was a rescue, his partner died and he had to be given up because they couldn’t care for him anymore. They kept Dexter in a small cage with his partner but is living a healthy life and I’m planning to upgrade the cage because it’s too small. It’s a 2 by 3 since I don’t have a enough room I will only have enough room for a 2x4

All my piggies are related I had one bad bout were my Millie was terrorizing her 2 sisters, her mom and aunty, Millie can be a brat. I didn't want the possibility of blood being draw while I was at work so I gave her a time out in a seperate cage. When I got home I put her back in the big cage with the herd and she's behaved. She hasn't thrown a temper tantrum since, maybe a brief exile can help with the occasional outburst.

Sometimes trying to bond pigs that have a friend already can make that bond that the 2 had break because of the stress of trying to be bonded with another pig or pair. I hope that makes sense. Loved the video! Love the channel ❤

I have 2 girls bubbles and Norah is the adult bubbles is the baby when we fist started the bonding they were fine Norah seemed to love bubbles until we put them in the cage at the time we had a small cage not knowing the we needed a bigger cage and they had a little fight over the hiding spot and bubbles being a baby that was just taking from her mom she was very clingy and that was in March and over the time I’ve learned more and bubbles is still clingy

I had such a stressssful couple of weeks trying to find my single male new cage mates. Started out with a young male, they just fought. Returned the young male, neutered my Piggie smalls/teddy and got him 2 ladies instead and it works much better but it was still stressful at first cause they were all dominant and telling each other off haha

I watched this video so many times before trying to bond my adult male with a young male and I followed all your steps and now they live happily and my adult isn’t by himself (he was by himself because I got him and his old cage mate a friend and they didn’t get along ) but now all is well and he has a friend! 😊 ☀️

I made a mistake... I have 2 boys from the same litter who were ok together but I added a new baby. I cleaned all their blankets and hides and dishes but let them in the cage together. There weren't any injuries, thankfully, but a lot of chasing, humping, butt waving and sniffing and chattering. I did expand the cage sizes to their play area which is done only occasionally so I think that helped. The baby was the target at first but then one of my boys really got into it with his brother. This was on Saturday. Today, all three are eating together but very quiet and it's kind of strange because they aren't fighting but just ignoring each other. They will share food and sometimes hides though. I am such an idiot because I thought it would be simpler adding a baby because they may feel protective of it and the baby wouldn't challenge them. Now I feel terrible. I only did a quick search for information and was not prepared. Next time I definitely will be... My question is about my boys... do you think they have been harmed psychologically and is there a way to reverse that? I feel so bad for putting them through that, especially the new baby. I know I will probably get criticism and I understand that and understand my mistake, but does anyone have some advice to encourage them to get along going forward?

I have two females that got along as babies but when they got older had to be separated. Now I cannot succeed in getting them back together. My one girl Fluff sits in a corner everytime and makes upset noises and chatters. Then my other girl, Storm responds by lunging. The lunging never stops and I block it everytime. Last time for like 10mins I had them together supervised and no one calmed down. It even escalated, Storm was super insistent on lunging. So they are not compatible at all.

Is there no rescue in your area that can help you to find a solution?

@@angeliqueruis4520 the closest one is 4 hrs away. I don't think they'd be able to help anyway. I've taken tips from people with experience and it hasn't helped. Some animals I believe cannot coexist. My girls seem happy separated in cages side by side. Thank you for the concern though. 🙂

@@amandaham7571 are you sure that you have two girls? Many people here have good experiences with a stable neutered male to keep snappy girls in line, but usually the bonding is in a rescue. It’s a bit strict in my area that they have company. Usually here young sisters are introduced to a stable adult. A shame that for you this is four hours away.greetings

@@angeliqueruis4520 positive they're girls they are almost a year old and don't have balls. My husband won't let me have any male piggies even if fixed. I too thought maybe my Storm cld b put in her place by a neutered male. For the sweet pig, we are currently on a waiting list for any female long haired pig. My Fluff will have a new friend sometime. As for Storm she can watch in the safety of her own cage. She is crazy agressive but seems energetic and happy by herself

@@amandaham7571 Maybe that female has ovary cystes. Often aggressive Guinea Pigs do well in a group where they learn that this behavior brings them nothing good. Maybe your exotic vet can be of help. Good luck

Sometimes it can be difficult and sometimes they just seem to accept and it's easy. I'm sorry this experience was stressful for you I think I got lucky with mine xx but it's good to watch for tips I'll be introducing a new edition soon. I think a little dominance is fine it's easier to just let the bossy one be like ey I'm the boss. Then after that fingers crossed. One of mine was like you will respect me 5mins later besties😂

I'm pretty sure the other girls could live completely harmoniously - it looked like Frenchy/ie was not going to really work out. :-( I think the dynamic really changed when David showed up. I think at least you know (unless something happened after the video ended) that you have some girlies that could live together and be happy herdettes!

I bonded two sets of trios in one day. IT SUCKED. My neutered male from one trio and female from the other trio did NOT want to get along. It was so stressful, one of the other pigs started a fight. Blood was drawn and fighting continued off and on for hours. It took my herd a few days to settle and they are fine now. The two alphas that wouldn’t bond are now BFF. We still have squabbles (mostly due to space) from time to time but over all they are a good herd.

Maybe they would bond better if they had a favorite song you can play or if they could play a little Xbox together on a little G. Pig sized TV lying on little bean bag chairs. G. pig sized chairs, of course.

So your one drawer in the kitchen... I have 6 in my kitchen but each one is about 6 inches wide. I refused to live this life so I literally got a dresser for my kitchen. It's where normal people would put a dining room table 🤷‍♀️ So where's my dining room table you ask? I usually just eat in the livingroom. So where do I watch TV you may ask, I watch TV in my bedroom where I also sleep. At least I don't eat my pizza dinner in the bathtub... anyone else read that book as a kid? 😂

Oh my Gracious You are too cute!!! We had to separate 2 beautifuly bonded males as one of them hopped in the “girlies” cage & now he wants to hump ..Offset.. my piggy… now I have 4 piggy cages and love yours! I use paper Kaytee bedding but they kick it everywhere… do you like fleece best? Love&light from California 💗💗

Had two sisters since birth with their godmum in a cage together after the mama passed away and it was tense since none of them were alpha-types so they were just constantly stressed out whenever someone was feeling ornery that day. My sisters and mom were all constantly petting or playing with them and up at odd hours around the clock, so in a way WE were the alphas and would stop any bickering (which happens with all siblings, lol) But yes, their pig trains around the living room were ridiculous since no one wanted to lead xD The princess of the group (or mama's spoiled little gurl lol) lived 1-2 years longer than the others and seemed to thrive living on her own. She got a lot sweeter to us anyhow and she never wanted for attention ;> She hated being out of her cage as a baby (her name was also Baby because she was soooo spoiled by attention lmao) and away from her Mama so she'd scream and wail when we held her(and pee of course lol). However one day, she was too clingy and squeaky for Mama's liking and Mama bopped Baby in the face. I've never seen a baby guinea pig soooo stunned, she looked up at us and held still as we picked her up and that was the first time she let us cuddle her.

Younger one kept attacking older one , older one had enough and pulled clump out of older one then chased the younger one throwing him about , needless to say seperate cages, one finger bitten to the nerve no feeling , but older one could have killed younger one , still love them to bits , garden gloves come in handy

Wait. So if u say that they’ll try and figure out who’s the dominant one after a while wouldn’t it be better to just have all the piggies at the same time that way they can settle it at once? Cause say u have two piggies and they figure out who’s dominant. Then u add another one, they’d have to go through the same process again, won’t they? Wouldn’t that just be added stress for them?

my 2 female pigs (we got them together and they may or may not be sisters) are CONSTANTLY purring and squeaking and sometimes chase each other. is that normal or is it a sign that the might have been a bad pair? maybe I want 2 more guinea pigs? is this an excuse?

I’ve been trying to bond my 3 month old and my 1 year old guinea pigs and it’s been mission impossible. I got the 1 year old with her 3 week old baby since the lady told me she would also act like a mother to my 3 month old and they just both attack the 2 month old and I’m so upset since I got the other two so she would have company and I have to keep them separated.

That almost never works. If you want a friendly guinea pig it is better to get help from a reliable person like a rescue. Maybe the rescue can help you with the mother pig and her baby if you do not want to bring them back to the lady. Mother Guinea Pigs sometimes even don’t want to be with their own kids anymore, let alone with your 3 month old Guinea Pig. I really hope someone will help you with this, good luck

I have a question my best friend got two male guinea pigs a little less than a year ago and she is experiencing one humping the other and the one that’s getting humped does not like it no actual harm has been done but she does not know if this is normal. This is her first time having pigs so she is not sure if it’s normal. Please let me know if you know if this is normal and if you have any advice for her thank you.

do male or female unfixed guinea pigs smell worse? im wanting to keep 2 pigs in my room that are same gender and i cant find anyone in my area that fixs pigs and cant find any pigs already fixed. male guinea pigs for me are my fav but i heard they stink worse than females so idk

I honestly do not know what the future holds. I may not take anymore in for a while bc my husband and I have not been able to travel together in a long time because of the amount of animals we have. But we are hopefully years away from having to be “pet free” so it’s just so hard to know what the future will unfold.

I have a bonded pair of males, and want to be prepared if I ever end up having to separate them, or the other passes, and want to be prepared for everything if I ever end up bonding one of my males with a female(s), so, how long would I have to wait after my guinea pig is neutured to bond them? And is there anything I have to do to set up for my male when he comes back from the vet? Edit: I am looking at other peoples experiences and websites, I just want others opinions on it

Question: is there a way to bond a pig that had been isolated and alone for years? Is there a way to bond him with other pigs or will he not want to? I’m asking cause I want to get piggies and my grandpa had one pig that he never wanted to get a friend for and it’s been years of Eddie living alone... I want to take him and bond him with my future pigs, I just don’t know it’s it’s safe or if he will enjoy that.. I don’t want him to be stressed out, I just want him to have a friend..even one, it doesn’t have to be multiple other piggies.

I do think you can try bonding your grandpa’s piggy. I personally feel it’s more about the pigs chemistry than it is them having gone years without being around another pig. I have adopted pigs who had been living along for year plus and They bonded with piggies. It’s just really up to the pigs themselves if they can cohabitate.

So I have boys my adult boy he’s the alpha very dominant when I first got him he was a rescue very similar to David he was with 2 other females && produced a few litters && had some babies with him with the females as well all in a tiny cage I know he’s produced more then 1 litter for a fact he lost a son I got for him I didn’t bond them yet but they communicated but I recently got another baby from one of his lady cage mates that had a litter they might of been his babies idk but the other girl he was with definitely had at least 1 litter by him I recently bonded this baby which isn’t my snowflakes son this was my first time bonding I was going to wait til he was 11 weeks only because i didn’t have the cage set up properly but I was worried the baby would be approaching becoming a teenager && hormonal so I bonded when baby was 9 weeks old it went great no aggressive behavior teeth chattering or anything just humping && chasing I’d also suggest for neutral space put fleece down && set up a playpen that’s what I did I personally didn’t use any hides so they can get used to each other always have veggies && a towel wrapped around your hand just in case they do fight

I have two males and humping happens often (about 2 times a day) its completely okay tho :) lots of piggy owners get stressed when they shouldn't be. Most of the time the humping is just reaffirming the hierchy. Also I've barely encountered that intense fighting before. The difference is that in bonding its a big no-no, while if the pigs have already bonded then its more of a warning sign then a need to separate(as long as you have treats to distract them) if they stop fighting after the treats then that means the pecking order is still okay. And it also depends on how old the piggies are, since 2 male teenage pigs are not the best mix but they're doable. If you see that type of fighting just give them treats and see if they go back at it and if they don't its more that hormones are acting up and when they stop growing they'll have less fights and become a chill herd

So I had two males 4 year old and 2 year old the two year old ended up passing away I have no idea why he seemed healthy but I was going to get a baby so the one is not alone should I just leave him to live alone? Or should I try to get the baby. my two males used to chatter at each other but never would fight I’m not sure what to do since you said you don’t introduce males

Do you have to bond a male and females too? because i want to breed my male and my two females (just once, maybe twice if they have really pretty babies and if there are people who want them) (and yes i know what im doing then im studying animal care and well being + breeding and special species, so im not just doing whatever) and i think it would be really fun to breed my male and two females but im not sure if i schould intoduce them and watch them or not

If they fight they will always fight. That is sort of How it is with pigs. My Henry and figgy were the same way. Once they establish that type of behavior it will always be that way more than likely. If it were me I would not try and bond them again. It will just stress them out and one will end up getting a nasty bite. Sorry it didn’t work out! I find that bonding is really hard and you just never know how it’s going to go.

Hello! I know this is an old video but I’ve been trying to look around and see if I could get some tips. I have two male piggies that have always been together and I just recently rescued my little miracle who is also a male. I have tried introducing all of them two times and both times it was very aggressive, I don’t think they are going to be sharing a cage together. I just feel bad that my little guy is going to be alone. 😢
