Hey Ashley I know this is a few months old, this video but I've since bought a mk8 Golf GTI and had some similar issues with the warning lights. I've also had issues with the keyless entry not working very well and signing into the car and becoming the primary user not working. Turns out there was a recall on select mk8's for a complete software reinstall. I've had this software reinstall done now and it's cleared off all those issues. I'd definitely recommend checking to see if your car also has this recall on it. Since I had that update done I've had no issues at all and I absolutely love the car. I went for an around 100 mile trip each way to the coast and it was a breeze in the Golf. It has a very clever cruise control system among other driving aids to make motorways a none issue and it has the power to make country roads fun. Great car.

For cars with keyless entry, I recommend keeping your keyfobs in a faraday bag or pouch overnight. These bags contain a metal foil that blocks the signal, so car thieves can’t stand outside your home and clone your keyfob.

I have the previous generation of Golf GTI and it’s way too easy to pull away from traffic lights or a junction and be doing very illegal speeds in no time. The automatic version is so smooth you don’t realise how fast you’re going until you look down at the speedo.

VW warnings: I have a 1 year old VW Transporter van, converted to a campervan, about 2,500 miles on the clock. It has shown a 'oil overfill, visit workshop' warning since new, which clears for 100km every time the bonnet is raised. It's actually a software or sensor fault with my day in the garage booked in a couple of weeks. That's a long time not to have a fix, but not a big problem, as it just involves driving around with an erroneous warning on the dash.
@Jonc25
@Jonc25 2 года назад
When i had a VW Van the workshop used to underfill the oil a little to stop that happening.

Once your two year warranty expires you can sign up for the 'All in' plan which gives you servicing and warranty for a further two years for £33/month, which is discounted further in spring and November. As long as your car is under seven years old/100K miles and has a full service history you can keep renewing the All in plan every two years. Quite good value for money if you're thinking of keeping the car for a while!

Own a 2018 Seat Leon estate, had a similar problem where it was displaying warning lights after a period of a few weeks sat still not being driven (although was being started and run to warm every week) when it was around 2 years old. As I drove it more afterwards the problem became less and less frequent and eventually stopped after 2 weeks of regular driving but I took it in to the dealer to investigate anyway and they concluded it needed a replacement turbo (under warranty). Once this work was completed there have been no further issues in the last 2 years.

I work at a Skoda dealership and I have to say that are a TON of software issues on the new models. The Octavia, which is essentially identical to a Golf, seems to be among the worst offenders. They have a habit of draining the battery when left for too long. When that happens you will get just about every warning signal on the dash. Once you have some charge on the battery, the trick is to turn off the car, get out and then lock it. After that you wait for the dash to go completely black (takes maybe 30 seconds). Now you can get in and turn it back on again and, fingers crossed, the faults should have gone away. Oh, and and you can reset infotainment system by holding in the power button for about 20 seconds. I’ve had to do this a couple of times if a car wouldn’t let me reset a TPMS alarm. Probably useful in other cases as well.

Hi Ashley, the mk8 golf is a gorgeous car!! I have one as my second car since getting my full license in 2020. I adore it. However, the issues you have come across the “Traffic Assist Unavailable” “Drive system problem, visit workshop” both appear in my car from time to time. I have been advised by my Volkswagen dealer in the south of Ireland that Volkswagen in January 2022 released a campaign to all Mk8 Golf owners that the software needs to be updated. Also your vw dealership may advise you that a part in the steering wheel system will need to be replaced in order to fix the Travel assist issue. Other than these same issues I came across myself, the car is perfect and easy to drive, very safe to use on the road and easy to tax and insure - and definitely a bonus it’s very economical! Best of luck with the car! Hope you get a fix soon, I’m currently waiting on my replacement steering wheel! All the best, Tommie!

I think the problem might be your battery,and they won’t necessarily admit it . A lot of cars have been stagnant for 2 years due to poor sales and get brought back to life with over recharging on demand . It’s probably in an unstable condition,cell wise, and might completely fail one day for no apparent reason. Not an uncommon issue now ,when they’re pushing new car sale everywhere. That’s why you got an exceptional price for your PX ! PS. I’m a M35d owner for many years with no major issues fortunately . Great channel ! 😉

We have had a MkV Golf for 10 years now as a second car - it was 4 years old when we bought it. It has had electrical “gremlins” since we got it. Warnings for ESP anti-skid and Diesel engine pre-glow will come on together every so often when driving. Car was in and out of VW dear let several time but no faults found. Lights go out at restart so we just ignore now. Also have a diesel 2020 Audi A5 that has never given and issues al all from new.

Last manual shift car - well couple of years ago, after driving turbo diesels for 15 years or so, I've got atmopheric petrol engine (Toyota 1.6, ~130HP), just for one last time before they stop making those. And I don't regret it for a second, although it's eating 6.0-7.5 liters/100 km (depends on how much I use highway, it's geared more towards the normal road). So now I hope they'll be still making those when I'll be looking for new car, of course with manual shifter :)

Great choice of car. Couple of things the battery is smaller that you might expect so if you leave it parked for a longtime it will turn off the less critical systems to ensure you can still start, once fully charged these warnings should go away. Secondly mine has been beeping and bonging while on journeys and when I mentioned this to VW Chester they said there was a known fault with the steering wheel as it’s full of sensors. If you keep your grip static on the wheel see if the beeps and bongs calm down. Anyway thought I pass on this in case it’s helpful, mines in the garage being fixed now.. hopefully. Alternatively you could try ear muffs.

I found that the Auto hold sometimes causes a jolt when disengaging & not something you want to happen on a driving test, Your find the tyres start to loss traction moving off in the wet when 50% worn even on the lightest throttle and moving away over white lines at junctions will aggravate the problem, I had the same problem with warning lights & found if you disconnect the battery for 30 minuets and at the same time earth the chassis to ground cured the problem...So far!

Definitely worth investing in a more advanced code reader that can read VAG specific codes. Or get a print out from the dealer. Could be a billion different things and the warning messages are unhelpful. If there are lots of random errors seemingly unconnected, maybe they sold you one that sat for months and nearly killed the battery.

I just said goodbye to my manual Leon Mark 3 , FR Black Edition - the lease was up. It was a very fun little car to drive! I've now swapped it for a Formentor 245 Hybrid which shares a lot of the VW AG kit, including the same MIB3 infotainment gubbins as the Golf 8. Luckily, no issues so far, and very happy to have another VW Group vehicle. I've heard of a few of the random "gremlins" and warning lights popping up for a few people and they're normally cleared just by doing a power cycle or reconnecting the 12v battery.

So, I had a big issue with a 69 plate VW Polo I bought brand new in September 2019. After I'd had the car a month, the speed limiter would show an error whenever you went to move off, if the stop/start system had kicked in, and you would then be unable to use the speed limiter until you turned the car off and on again. I booked the car in under warranty at my local dealership and in total booked it in three times before giving up and pursuing a rejection under Consumer Rights Act. All in all the car went in five times and had many different components changed and I rejected the car shortly before lockdown in March 2022. The dealership then tried to change me into a different car that didn't match the minimum spec I provided them with and VW head office and Volkswagen Financial Services had to get involved but still didn't sort the problem. The dealership stated they couldn't refund my deposit until they had confirmed the "level of support VW were willing to provide". Eventually, I did get my money back but it took around two months bringing the whole ordeal to seven months or so. I now drive a VW T-Roc and it's been great so far, no issues and had it over two years.

my biggest annoyance about the grocery getter's infotainment screen is it will randomly pop up a message that taking your eyes off the road to look at your infotainment screen is dangerous. so then you have to look at the screen and tap a "button" to get it to go back to its normal program. fortunately, it usually only does it when you start the car, so you're not in motion while it's trying to distract you to warn you not to be distracted.

Sometimes if you are leaving your car standing for a while these kind of faults with warning lights etc can be caused by low charge on the battery, there is so much tech running on modern cars that they can drain the battery if left standing for a couple of weeks or again if you do a lot of low speed urban driving it may not catch up on charge levels.

You could get an OBD11 port scanner and an app on your phone to quicky check the fault code and clear it if its nothing serious? I had a MK7.5 Golf R and it was a phenomenal car and luckily never had an issue with it (bar the known fault with the bonet release catch that was fixed under warranty) across 3 years of ownership, moved onto a Tesla Model 3 Long Range and couldn't be happier, taking advantage of the insane car market myself too to walk away from the Golf breaking even and releasing a ton of equity. Absolutely barmy that that was possible! Saved a ton on fuel too, so definitely the smarter financial decision so far!

I also have issues with my Golf GTI. Errors with SOS, rear traffic, front camera, sign reading, climate control, speakers cracking and no sound all come and go. I've read there isn't currently a fix so I haven't taken it to the dealer yet, but I will when it goes in for the new recall.

VW dealers have always been a bit strange. The mirror separated from the heating back plate on my MK7 and they refused to replace it under warranty, despite there being a technical bulletin released by VW that advised immediate replacement under warranty for that issue. They told me I used the heated mirrors too much - despite it being my second day of ownership lol

Yes we had issues with our golf including the fuel injectors, ECU and cylinder misfire. Took a few weeks to fix fully. And they used to have gas struts

GF hasa 2020 Mk4 Leon (same platform as the MK8 Golf) - yes same problems - front assist and SOS warnings. I've not driven it lately, but it went in last month for some sensors and a new control unit under waranty. I've not heard any complaints so seems to have fixed it. I still think the lack of backlighting on the head unit is criminal, though at least her's has actual buttons on the wheel, rather than those capacitive ones, that I hear are a bit rubbish

I've not had a problem with a car but the first used van that I had bought from a dealer was a Peugeot Expert. It kept going into limp mode and was attempted to be fixed but nothing seemed to work. When limp mode happens on a dual carriageway or motorway, it didn't make me feel safe so I eventually used it as a part exchange on my next van.

Auto Hold is quite useful in stop-start traffic, but worth mentioning to pupils that the rear brake lights remain illuminated, while the system is active. So of particular mention at night, to prevent unnecessary dazzle to queueing vehicles behind. I tend to apply the EPB when 'a pause becomes a wait'. With the error messages, I'd be interested to see what diagnostic codes have been logged for this - have a look with CARLY or OBDEleven, either of which would be handy to have with the couple of VAG Group cars you have. Wouldn't be the first time that the customer ends up knowing more about the issue than the dealer! As some of the other comments have said though, it sounds to be like a battery drain and/or low battery issue, especially if you've seen this after an extended period of time with the car sitting.
@BIG2hats
@BIG2hats Год назад
Why are you worried about dazzling the people behind you? There are no OEM rear lights that are bright enough to bother anyone. Just enjoy using auto hold as it was intended, otherwise your stressing over nothing!
@WardyTechnical
@WardyTechnical Год назад
@@BIG2hats I disagree that OEM rear lights don't have the potential to bother other road users, particularly in a queue of traffic at night. Also, see Highway Code Rule 114: "In stationary queues of traffic, drivers should apply the parking brake and, once the following traffic has stopped, take their foot off the footbrake to deactivate the vehicle brake lights. This will minimise glare to road users behind until the traffic moves again."

As the car has been standing a while they can sometimes throw up fault codes. Get the battery checked as if it has fallen below 12 volts at some point then sulfation may have occurred and any cleared faults could come back again.

Interestingly, my '99 BMW 323Ci has a less responsive than you would expect go pedal, especially when compared to the mk2 Honda CRX that came before it; BMW marked it down as an item to monitor on their multipoint inspection for the one time I took it to a main dealer (for the airbag recall that everyone had a few years back). The GTI looks like a very nice car, but the heavy on the electronics dash just scream pound signs (much easier with an exclusive, rather than inclusive warranty admittedly!), I hope the VW dealer manages to rectify what's going on there!

I admit some surprise at a UK instructor getting a GTI for driver instruction, but round here in Norway the driving schools are now buying Model 3's and Mustang Mach-E's, so it's obvious the performance isn't a problem for learners.

My wife's Mk7.5 Golf GTI has done similar things in the past. It was due to low voltage on the battery. These cars really don't like sitting still for very long at all. We also had to replace the battery after 3 years, and 11,000 miles. When we go on holiday we tend to leave it on a trickle charger. I suspect you won't have this issue as much as your car will be driven a lot more :-)

I bought a 6 year old used Polo from a VW main dealer in mid February, no issues so far and it came with 24 months warranty and breakdown assistance. If I had taken their finance offer, it would have included servicing as well. But you cannot transfer a number plate onto a used car when you buy it, apparently. Ashley did you have this issue? Back in the late 1990's my parents bought a used car from a main dealer and at that time, you could (because they did) transfer your own plate onto it to take effect from the date you acquired it. I'm still waiting for my first V5C 6 weeks later......... but of course DVLA took the VED payment immediately online

Congrats on the new motor. Seems to me that since Dieselgate the German manufacturers have slipped behind the koreans in particular for quality and although subjective desirability. Not the first I've heard about nearly new german stuff and the entertainment system is a horrid distraction. ( this from a former Beemer fan and previous owner )

Have similar warning messages on my 2021 Audi S3. Audi can’t fix them and it’s a common fault, I’ve got around it by logging in as a guest when starting the car as opposed to using my user profile. Not sure that the new golf has the same functionality but it works for a bit, however it doesn’t stop the SOS fault!

hi, the mk8 golfs/the new mqb platform is shocking. so many problems experienced by several owners and at some points it actually created a serious issue where when someone was on a roundabout the car decided to cut out...after several software updates since 2019 the problems are on going.

Nice video. Fascinating to hear your reasoning. I've had three Golf GTIs in my time, that's a very powerful car to learn in! I used to work in a VAG dealership in the late 1980s. Driving a 1.8i Mark 1 GTI was a lively experience! My last car was a 2010 XF and Jaguars are notorious for throwing up all sorts of error messages when the battery is low. Especially if the car is left sitting for too long. If I were you I'd have the battery checked out ASAP. Hope that helps. Enjoy the GTI!

I will say, the bit of pain with a new VW is not unexpected. On occasion I'll rent one, it'll be brand new with less than 100mi on the odo, and the stop-start will be broken, or it'll be complaining about an oil level sensor.

I Use to work for Volkswagen the golf mk8 uses a different electrics cambus to previous models and unfortunately they sent the car in to production before it was ready. And when I left Volkswagen in October last year there was still lots of issues with the cambus it will throw up random faults and errors when there's nothing wrong with the car Volkswagen is ironing out the errors with tpi updates but there still yet to have rectified them all.

I have a 2013 Skoda (VW group) and see similar problems to you any time I don't drive for a week or so and it's purely because the battery has run down. Recharge the battery and all is fine. When you said you left it for three weeks I knew exactly what was coming. Do be aware that the 12v power - the cigarette lighter - is always on and you should make sure your dashcams stop recording shortly after you turn the engine off.

VW have had well documented problem with software development - especially on their electric cars. They've also been on a sustained cost reduction programme for their cars - the latest Golf feels much cheaper than the Mk6 and Mk7 versions. Glad you like though and hope it settles down.

Got my 2019 Leon Cupra serviced at my local VW dealership then the MOT and some remedial work in between and had pleasant experience every time, no quibble for a small warranty job, replacement brake pads and good communications. I had better experience with the Seat than when I had my Octavia vRS when it went to the local Skoda Dealership under VW finance, my Seat is on a third party lease company, lol.

I see VW service hasn't changed much since my experience of a GTi 20+ years ago. My brand new car must've been back some 10-15 times with a water leak (bad windscreen bond) and cutting out when dipping the clutch. Eventually the dealer took my car for a week letting their chief machanic drive it home to find out what was causing the cutout. When it was returned it had a tappet-like noise which turned out to be a missing gear tooth in the gearbox. So it had obviously been thrashed.

I bought a new vw a few years ago. It cost around £43,000. VW were hard work to buy from and even harder work to get them to fix it. After a lot of wasted time I even reported them to the advertising standards agency who upheld my claim but they still refused to help me. The fault cost me £135 to rectify at a none vw garage. On top of that if had several little faults that required vw assist to come and reset. I had an isuzu for 7 years before that and all it ever had in over 100,000 miles was tyres and services so it was a bit of a shock. The end of the line was when they forgot to tighten some of the suspension bolts and I lost steering at 50mph. The way vw treats its customers is a disgrace and I have no intention of putting any more business their way so good luck! On a plus note we had a golf gti at work and it was an excellent all-rounder. The auto handbrake didn't engage a few times. Once it rolled into a bollard and the other the driver had his leg out the door when it started to roll and he sort of crushed his own leg with the door so always check it or leave it in gear or something. It was stolen from the new owner shortly after we sold it :( 😞 Good luck!
