I've been on the Stadler FLIRT in Helsinki, Finland, and Tallinn, Estonia. Both of them run on 1,524 mm gauge and have 2+3 seating as it has a wider body. The Estonian version has the power pack in the middle like Ottawa does, and when the train accelerates at full power it doesn't really feel that loud. The diesel engines are not mechanically connected to the wheels, rather the engines act as generators to give electrical power to the whole train including the motors, which work like those on a regular electric train otherwise. Outside, it is a little louder than an electric train, but much quieter than say, a GO Transit train in comparison.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with the FLIRT overseas.

Also means that if they ever electrify the line, they just need to remove the power car and add pantographs.

The one complaint I gotta make is how they made zero change with the older stations. Besides making it longer they still got those ugly old roofs and they don’t even look anything like the new ones. And as for Greenboro Station, it doesn’t even have a roof! Also most the new stations have the same design which I won’t complain about but come on. Although this video was great and I’m super exited for this to open either way :)

Why can't our Line 1 have these trains, cause this new train looks way better than what line 1 currently has which line 1 trains have been having tons of issues with them as well.

I recognize these are Canadian service and you're a Canadian focused channel,but can you comment on if similar trains would be legal to use in the US? I'm particularly interested in mixed traffic service from Raleigh NC to Durham NC, but many places currently use old - to - ancient locomotives and passenger cars and could really use an upgrade.

Stadler already has some FLIRTs running on Texas (Texrail)

@daniellewis1789 2 года назад
@@truedarklander TEXrail looks to be a dedicated passenger line - great that the EPA won't be a hurdle, but I know there are some regulations on passenger equipment sharing track with freight trains and I don't know if these are exempt.
@RailFansCanada
@RailFansCanada 2 года назад
As others have said below, TexRail has been operating the FLIRT for a number of years now. For our line in Ottawa, Line 2 is shared with freight so it is certified to operate on a line that can see freight traffic (it was formerly a freight line that was repurposed for passenger service). However freight traffic on it is very rare but it does happen on rare occasions. Most stations have short platform extenders that stick out from the platforms to bridge the small gap between platform and the train. When a freight would need to go by, the extenders would be flipped up so there would be more room to pass through. They are small but can be seen here. otrain.railfans.ca/station/carleton

why dont they throughrun the 4 trains to the line 1 interchange changing that oftain to get to the city from the airport isn't practical
@RailFansCanada
@RailFansCanada 2 года назад
This is due to the Line 2 still for the most part being single track. Council decided there was higher benefit to serving Riverside South with frequent direct service than the Airport. Technically trains can run from Airport to Bayview but this will be only in rare occasions, atleast initially.
@burgerpommes2001
@burgerpommes2001 2 года назад
@@RailFansCanada but they just upgraded the line But it is still so overcrowded that you can't run every 3. Or so train to the airport?
@RailFansCanada
@RailFansCanada 2 года назад
@@burgerpommes2001 it’s not overcrowded. With single track, every 12 minutes south of South Keys to Limebank would become 24 minutes when there was a train that would head off to the Airport. Single track is the limitation. Otherwise the new trains are double capacity from the old service.
@burgerpommes2001

@@RailFansCanada why didnt they build more passing loops or double track the thing
@RailFansCanada
@RailFansCanada 2 года назад
Money and they don’t see a need for higher frequency at this time. There are some more passing tracks but the main bottlenecks are Walkley Station (as the passing track is just north of the station and not at the station), Dow’s lake tunnel and Rideau River bridge.

The Trillium line runs through a tunnel under Dow's Lake. The tunnel was not designed to accommodate catenary wires.

It's great that we're getting some new trains. Hopefully these ones work better then the ones we got from a different company. Which keep catching fire, derailing, breaking down, it takes two of them in tandem otherwise they won run. DON'T BUY TRAINS FROM ARGENTINA.

They are no doubt wonderful trains but why is a city supposedly committed to a carbon-neutral future running diesel trains for its LRT? And, it's not good enough to say because we already have a small part of the line configured that way. Who made the case for standardizing on electric trains - either the same as the Confederation Line or better. And, while I'm at it, what's the case for having much of the Trillium line single-tracked? And, finally, the airport to downtown: two transfers involving three different type of trains - really?
