korean is syllable timed language: no stressed syllables!! every syllable is said at the same amount english is a stressed timed language: some syllables are more stressed than others korean consonants can be categorized into 4 sounds: ^^you can think of these categories as going from soft to harder sounding 1. nasal: pronounced through the nose [ㄴ,ㅁ,ㅇ] 2. plain: dont have special features add to them [ㄱ,ㄷ,ㅂ,ㅅ,ㅈ] EX: "T" in sTand "P" in sPan 3. aspirated: have an added turbulent sound [ㅋ,ㅌ,ㅍ,ㅊ,ㅎ] -pronounced with a big burst of air EX: "T" in Tuck, "T" in Take, "P" in Puck. 4. tense: pronounced with a stiffer voice [ㄲ,ㄸ,ㅃ,ㅆ,ㅉ] -more pressure is built up and its released much more quickly than plain sounds *WHEN PRONOUNCING "ㄹ": the tongue should strike the gum ridge behind your upper teeth in a quick rapid motion

Yes, Korean language is syllable timed language. However, there are many cases that we need to use interval or stress. For example, the word '효과', which means 'effect', is pronounced like '횩__꽈'. Almost every Korean says like that although the standard says it should be pronounced as '효-과'.

I couldn't, for the life of me, write down the differences between "eo", "o", "u", and "eu". Closest I could figure out was either "u" or "eu" was pronounced oo Just a suggestion-- if you have vowels that sound that similar, put the pronunciations next to them. It'd help a lot for people like me who have problems hearing.

@KoreanClass101 8 лет назад
+Douglas Wright Hi Douglas, Thanks for posting. The tongue position is the same when pronouncing 'ㄴ' and 'ㄷ' (although the former is nasal and the latter is not), which may cause the confusion. However, there is a difference in the pronunciation! Try practicing listening to sounds such as '내가' and '대가' to see the difference in the pronunciation. Cheers, Team KoreanClass101.com

I think I struggle the most with “ㄱ”. I always thought it’s pronounced like English “g” as in “girl”, but turns out that sound is more for “ㄲ”. Then when I listen more carefully it sounds almost like English “k” as in “king”, but that sound is actually for “ㅋ”. So, what and how exactly “ㄱ” should sound like???
@KoreanClass101
@KoreanClass101 5 лет назад
Hi Jayiwa, Thanks for posting. The consonant ㄱ would actually sound somewhere between the 'g' and 'p' sound of the English alphabet (think of a 'g' pronounced with a burst of air). It is romanized as 'g' to make it easier to understand as there is no exact English equivalent. Hope this was of help. Cheers, Team KoreanClass101.com

it depends...if "r" is at the beginning oft a word it could be also pronounced as "n" at the beginning of a syllabel its also often "r". if two "r" are written like molla (mol-la) its pronounced like "l"

I just want to clarify something. "ㄱ" does this character pronounced like g and k sound? as well as "ㄷ" sound like d and t? and "ㅂ" sounds b and p?
@gagakagaga
@gagakagaga 4 года назад
In Korean language, there's no voiceless consonant. K is voiceless, and G is voiced. "ㄱ" and "ㅋ" are voiced consonants that sound almost same position with K. The difference between ㄱ and ㅋ is pressure. T is voiceless, and D is voiced. "ㄷ" and "ㅌ" are almost same position with T. The difference between them is pressure. P is voiceless, and B is voiced. "ㅂ" and "ㅍ" are also almost same position with P. The difference between them is also pressure. There's no sound like G, K, D, T, B, P, F, V in Korean.

Learning the pronounciation of vowels and consonants is fine and dandy. But when you here "eopsne" as "amne" as I do in this video ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--cz-pmZPYSU.html ) it becomes clearer that learning the pronounciation of letters is not that usefull.
