I used to write interlock code for diffusion furnaces LPCVD; these jobs have all been outsourced away to Twain and China. Semiconductors are not a useful skill in the United States.
So nanoscale manufacturing is basically like photo-lithography!!! That's the worst news I've heard so far. This means there's little to no hope for competition in this field. The established players are so far ahead and the capital cost is so high that except for some research and RnD, the future of the whole nanotech field looks as bleak as the early days of the industrial revolution, only we're now at the decline side of the Gauß curve.
