🛑 IMPORTANT: This video is intended for general information purposes only. It is not a comprehensive video on lye safety (I'm doing one of those asap!). Sodium hydroxide (and other lye types) in granular form or in solution with water/other liquids, as well as raw soap batter, are highly corrosive and require careful and attentive handling. As a hobby soap maker, you are responsible for the safety of yourself and others around you when you make soap. Please watch this excellent lye safety video from Royalty Soaps before you proceed with making your own soap! ✅ ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1R68zaZHgBU.html

Elly, Thank you so much for all of your soap making tutorials! My wife and I have always wanted to make soap. Your videos made it look so easy we gave it a try. Our first batch was very slow to trace but turned out perfect! We just made another batch yesterday. That batch was also very slow to trace but also turned out perfect as well. We added ground oatmeal and it stayed perfectly suspended in the soap. Our first batch is six weeks old and it is wonderful!! It lathers up really nice and is very luxurious! We're sold on making our own soap, thanks to you!

@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Thank you again! Your good luck wishes worked very well. My Castile soap is a little more greenish and not as white as yours, supposedly because of my darker and not so light olive oil. Maybe thats why, when i put the soap out of the mold it seemed more wet than in your video after 48 hours. Do you think the difference of the olive oil may be the reason for that, because i was very precise with the grams? It was still hard enough though and i believe in the next weeks it will get harder and harder. I´m looking forward to see more videos of yours. I think you are a splendid teacher!

Hi Elly, I am getting more confident with making soap and sourdough!! ** many thanks to you!! I am planning on my next batch of soap to measure out my water in a canning jar,...tare, then spoon straight from the container of NaOH with a dry plastic spoon then stir. This seems to me that will be safe enough and reduce the chance for trace NaOH to sprinkle around and stick into a separate container. Loving my new hobbies!! ~~thank you again for all you share!!!
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 4 года назад
Thank you Connie, I'm so glad you're enjoying my channel and feeling confident with everything! You can absolutely add your lye directly to the water, but I've never chanced it. I am really flexible with sourdough baking, but completely opposite with soap! I prefer to be absolutely sure I've got the exact amount before I add it to the water. I'm a bit fussy about it though, you do what works for you :)

Hi Elly. I finally got my lye (no fragrance or essential oils, colourants other than natural colours yet). I made my first batch with filtered water (as my water smells sulfuric in the spring). I can still smell it in the first batch even with the filtered water. The soap itself turned out fine. I coloured some of it with spirulina, it worked out fine. i can send pictures if you like. Not sure how though except through email.

@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking thanks for your reply! I was wondering if that turmeric soap stains counter tops? Once I spilled some turmeric on a night gown and never got that stain out. Watching you made me think soaps would be a nice Christmas gift for a few people on my list. My Grannie, who passed in ‘82 made soap the traditional way, saving her fats from cooking until she had enough. When I was about 10-12 she showed me how she made it. I remember her saying you stir the lye and water until “it is as hot as a three dollar bill”, it was a funny comment, and out of the ordinary for her. Lol I had to ask my mom what it meant. Many years later my Grandma told of her soap making business when she was young. People would bring their fat after having an animal processed, and she and her mother would render down the fat, then make soap and return it to the customer. We have it pretty easy! I haven’t made any in a long time, but I think I might make a batch with my dad when I go see him next. He loves homemade soap. And what is not to love?

Elly, thank you so so much for all your help...you have a wonderful teachimg style and so easy to follow. i am so chuffed i made my first soap a couple of days ago and it saponified and turned out!! I was thrilled. Everything i know i have learnt from you!!, I just have two questions, please you could help me.? On one of the bars..i made 4 individual little bars to try...in the corner it had a little bit that was like jelly and not solid like the rest. What might have caused that do you think?, The other question is about fragrance...i still haven't quite understood how to work out how much fragrance you use and in what form...i bought some rose absolut to try but its in a tiny bottle and comes out drop by drop...what form do you buy your frangrance in and how do you work out how much to use? Do you have a "Fragrance video"? Lol x
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 4 года назад
Thank you Annie, that's lovely feedback. The little gelly part is probably an area where your soap heated up quite a lot during the saponification/gel phase. It's no issue, just cosmetic. I am planning a soap fragrancing video soon, so that should help, but in the mean time I tend to fragrance my soap anywhere between 2-4% of the total oil batch for essentail oils, and about 1-2% for fragrance oils because they tend to be stronger. It really depends on the oils you're using. Many essential oil suppliers will recommend how much to use in soap. The general rule is that for a product to be skin safe for EO's 3% is the maximum. You can get away with more in soap because it's a wash off product. Hope that helps a bit. You can search for more info on this, it's out there :)

Hey Elly! Love you so much. Quick question regarding the water that goes into the soap process, can you use tap water? Or is it bottled or even distilled water to use. I know in cosmetic formulations e.g. lotions you must use distilled. I am on the cusp of making my first batch of soap, so looking at a lot of your vids to first purchase my equipment and of course safety gear. So just here educating myself first before diving in. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world at large. Such an act of selflessness. Blessings from the Caribbean❤

So here I am, a 60 year old man who has always gotten bath soap by looking for the brand labeled "soap". Then I happened to buy some plain home made coconut soap at a farmer's stand while on vacation and wow, I never knew how clean I could feel when there's no goo, oils, scents, herbs or vegetables added. Can't go back to that stand. Then tried some so called pure soap brands that really aren't and are mostly air, and your vids have got me ready to make my own now! Hopefully, the neighbors won't have to call in FEMA, ha.

I am curious that if I buy a silicone mold, what is the best way of determining my volume so that I can make adjustments when I begin with one of your recipes? Should I pour oil into it and then measure the weight or what would you suggest? Thanks for helping me in this regard. 😀

I pour in water rather than oil, into a cavity and weigh that. Much easier to clean up! Then multiply that by the number of cavities and you have your capacity. Have fun!

Thanks Rena, no, you can't substitute jojoba for the olive oil - they are very different fats. You can use soap on your facial skin, but I would leave it very plain and unscented. @EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 4 года назад
Good question! I've never used one so I'm not sure. Maybe you could use a deeper bowl so the beaters are fully submerged under the soap batter? The other thing would be just to mix the soap to a light trace (just starting to thicken), then stop mixing and try to tap out the bubbles. If you tap the bowl on your counter, if the soap mixture isn't too thick the bubbles would surface. Other than that, I wouldn't worry about the bubbles, they don't hurt the soap in any way :)

ok number 2 vlog of your I have watched. Beside olive oil what other oils could you use. You mentioned that coconut oil is drying to the skin in you other vlog. I was surprised by that. I know that we cant get palm oil any more. But what other oils could be used? Not a fan of olive oil due to it smell. I wouldn't use vegetable oil either. How do you arrive at the correct weights for your ingredients.

Hello Elly. Thank you for your videos. Just wondering where do you usually buy acostic soda? A friend of mine told me that i shouldnt get it at supermarkets as its supposed for cleaning of sink pipes.
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 5 лет назад
Are you in Australia? Here I buy mine from Coles, Woolworths or Bunnings. In most supermarkets you can get both caustic soda and drain cleaner, which looks similar but has additional ingredients. Caustic soda can also be used to clear drains, just to confuse things! As long as the product you are buying says 'caustic soda' and it should say somewhere on the label either 98 or 99% sodium hydroxide, that's the one you want.

@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 5 лет назад
Hi Kylie, thank you for your feedback. Unfortunately no, this is the way soap is made. Originally soap was discovered (ancient times) when animal fat was poured onto ashes from a fire (caustic), the resulting substance of the two chemicals combining was soap! Caustic soda doesn't sound natural, but it's just a chemical, as are all oils. Modern detergent substances (ie, what's in shampoos and commercially made liquid hand soap) are your only cleansing alternative to making soap bars, however they are arguably full of not so great chemicals as well! Nature is full of chemicals :)
