none of the amateurs American musicians I know understand do re mi etc so my conclusion is that solfeggo is not a regular practice in music teaching in the us which is really sad. The fact that you video to explain why it is important just further proves it. Solfeggo is common practice anywhere else in the world. It’s such a great part of understanding the music before you play it. Feel bad that it is not regularly taught in America

They used to teach it in schools, but there have been so many budget cuts and music is usually the first on the chopping block!

So true. Can confirm. Thankfully, because of people like Brenda, aspiring musicians have access to this information. Myself being one of them. Thanks personally.

Fabulous breakthrough for me. I was confused when a respondent used C5 as middle C . When I queried with C4. The reply was "Sorry I learn Solfege" Apparently many countries do, it is the English speakers who are more likely to use Piano C4. Immediately I can see the Circle of Fifths as Fixed DO kicking off with F as Guido D'arezzo did when teaching young singers. Further search shows Rick Beato,s article on Developing Perfect Pitch and explaining the Movable as described here along with Intervals.

Dear Brenda! One can find so many videos on RU-vid about sight reading and ear training, and so much of them ist totally useless. And now, you present hier one of the best methods, which really works good. And also you mention Kodály. I was born in his country (Hungary) and I was educated with his method. The result is, that I can sight read (singing) nearly everything, and when it is really difficult, I need only a short time to learn it. I live now in Gemany, since over 30 years, and I suffer to hear how poor choirs and also choirmasters hear. More precisely, they play piano during choir rehearsal instead of hearing. This limits the ability of choirs to learn more complicated or polyphonic pieces. Educated ears seem to be a cultural heritage threatened by extinction. Thank you for your efforts! Maybe one more sentence: Please say your students that also solfege works only good with sufficient exercize. preferably every day. With some diigence, one will see the first results within some month and will get a well educated ear in some few years.

Super helpful for a singer who didn't bother to learn the inner workings of solfege as a young musician. Thanks for helping me fill in the gaps of my education. (Better late than never!) ♬♪

This is really great information, thank you! One question I have is, what is the difference in using solfège instead of learning if a note is the 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc of a scale?

what are your thoughts on using Solfege for the Seven Modes of the Major Scale? ( for example, singing Dorian Solfage) thanks.
