My uncle, 1st Lt. James R. Cain, was with the 41st Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop and landed on Biak on May 27, 1944. The landing was all "screwed up". The 186th Infantry landed so far to the west that it and the 162nd had to cross each other's lines of march. My uncle was killed about noon (New Guinea time) that same day. I am the oldest of his relatives and remember him slightly as a very small child. Some years ago, after much research and being able to contact some of the men under him, I was able to write a booklet for my family to explain what and why it happened. My grandmother was able to bring her only son back where he is buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio.

My dad was there, dug in on the beach with the Army's 476 AAA.

Hi Mary, my dad Thomas O'Donnell was there also. He was awarded the Silver Star for shooting down 4 attacking planes that day 5/27/1944. He died in a car accident back home 1955 (I was 2 years old). Godspeed. Pat O'Donnell

My grandfather was involved in the landing and arrived on the 27 of May. He was Corporal Herbert Warren O'Mullane of 2nd Platoon Company D (later C), 641 Tank Destroyer Battalion and later renamed 98 Chemical Mortar Battalion. The expected 2500 enemy troops turned out to be 11000 instead. Not enough attention is given to this engagement.

My uncle was E Company, 162nd. Landed on Biak on the 27th, killed in action on the 29th. Thanks for sharing this video! Makes me want to visit the island some day.

Sorry for the loss of your uncle. My uncle was killed on the 28th. Trying to find out detailed info for my dad, who is now 94. The family were never able to get details. His plane may have been shot down by friendly fire. My kids & I want to help shed light on what happened, if we can.

Very interesting to see Army officers wearing camo HBTs. Those naval rockets are also fascinating. Such a shame Biak is not as recognized as many other Pacific battles, especially since it was the first time Japan introduced it's new attrition based strategy that would later be used on Peleliu and Iwo Jima.

Cave-fighting. Biak had everything Iwo Jima, Peleliu, Saipan, Okinawa had to offer plus the usual death & no surrender since Tarawa. The Army fighting on Biak proved equal to the task in everyway, as the Marines were elsewhere in The Pacific.

My uncle was part of the 603rd medium tank company that invaded Biak. He said the fighting there was indescribable.

It had nothing to envy Iwo Jima, Peleliu or Okinawa. Those Army soldiers proved to be everything equal to the Marines.

Sounds like your father in law was in the 41st Division 162nd Regiment, like my father Lt. Pat Neishi.

Yes he was. At Salamaua he was a new 2nd Lt. of the 1st Battalion Company A of the 162nd. 76 days of combat and a Presidential Unit Citation add to our pride of our Dad. He was just one of the greatest generation.
