Oops. So even the clumping is invasive. I've never had a clumping one.

Clumping bamboo is not invasive. Do your research. Each clumping variety has a certain size footprint but will stay within that footprint. Its feeder roots may suck water from nearby plants. That would be the only reason I would put down a barrier, but not because it spreads past its genetic footprint/diameter.
