Thank you for watching!
I sometimes receive questions about how to stitch a running stitch with a Sashiko thimble and a Sashiko needle.
I have been enjoying Sashiko only as a hobby, so I am not an expert and I must have developed my own way of stitching. But I was also interested in finding a 'correct' way as I had seen different ways of holding a needle and moving hands.
I did my investigation and I got the impression that there is no single 'correct' way but there are some common ideas.
Again, I'm not an expert, so please also refer to books and other sources by experts!!! There are other ways to stitch than what I showed in this video as well.
This is not what you have to follow. Many people don't use a thimble when they stitch. The way you want to stitch can be different depending on your hand size and strength too. If you are used to stitch in a different way, it may be the best way for you.
If you are an absolute beginner, I think you can just start with tools you've already got.
Try different thickness and length of needles on different materials first. Depending on your project type (for example, are you stitching on a piece of tightly woven fabric or on your denim? Does your pattern include acute curves? Is your pattern large or small?), a needle you want to use may be different.
As I explained in the video, I choose my needle based on the material I stitch on and the length I feel comfortable with for the project.
I hope this video helps your stitching!

@@thegreenwrapper Yes, I am stitching dish towels with straight lines, working on keeping the stitches the same size. I also follow Xiaoxiao and she showed how to do those. You two are my favorite because you show how to reuse things and you are both so good at teaching. Thank you.

Stitching on dish towels (called Hanafukin in Japanese) is very popular in Japan too. It’s so nice to watch many people enjoying Sashiko on RU-vid😊

This has been the best video I’ve seen so far on the unshin needle handling! You may characterize yourself as a beginner, but this instruction is nonpareil! Thanks for making my own beginner’s journey and life more wonderful.

Thank you for the question! In this video, I used a heat-erasable marker which is called White Marking Pen from Clover. However, they are not perfect and I use different types of markers depending on the fabric or the project I have. Here’s a video I talked about different options: Which fabric marker should I use for drawing Sashiko patterns? Sashiko basics series Part 4 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d1oI3JW1e7c.html I hope this helps❤️😊

one issue I am finding that the few longer needles I have brought are not so sharp as the smaller ones so they would for example be good on heavy fabric as you show but I can not find a longer needle that seems to work so well on thinner fabric with a tighter weave. What should I be looking for please? What thickness of needle will I need to buy that is both long but will work on thinner fabrics? I am in Japan right now so finding them is not so difficult but knowing which is right dimensions is hard.
@thegreenwrapper
@thegreenwrapper 8 месяцев назад
Sashiko needles are generally sharp but I have also found that some are good for thicker fabrics and some are good for thinner fabrics. I use a thin Sashiko needle (細番手)from Tulip for thinner fabrics such as Sarashi. They are super sharp so you need to be careful not to stab yourself😅 They sell thick ones and thin ones in almost identical boxes. I use the 0.84mm needle. Here’s the link to the manufacturer. www.tulip-japan.com/?pid=147286766 I believe that there were no Sashiko-specific needles and threads at first, but longer and thicker needles were handy for stitching thick layers together. So, I think the best way is to choose the best thread and needle for your fabric. The book which I learned Sashiko from (Sashiko Hyakuyo by Eiko Yoshida 1981) also says ‘the most important thing is that the final product is nice and neat. (…) There are no rules about what type of a needle you absolutely have to use, so I’d recommend using a needle which is the most comfortable for you to stitch”. (Sorry about my poor translation…)
