It was a disturbing story. 14-year-old Madison Coe was electrocuted while using her cell phone in her bathtub. Her family told Inside Edition she regularly used her phone while soaking in the tub. So is it ever safe to use your cell phone in the bathtub? To find out, electrical engineer Steve Fowler set up a demonstration with Inside Edition's Chief Investigative Correspondent, Lisa Guerrero, to show what could happen when you use a cell phone in the water. #InsideEdition

The closest my phone ever gets to my bathtub is the counter (the toilet is between the tub and the counter.) and I *never* charge it in the bathroom. If the battery is low then it stays on the charger in the other room. This was a horrible mistake by a teenager that didn't think her actions through. I do truly feel for her family.

I swear that over a decade ago there was a thing on Discovery Channel showing how they now have blowdryers, curling irons, etc. that can fall in the water while plugged in and not electrocute a human. I remember them testing the water and the tester showing nothing. I was baffled. The scene with the radio in the bathtub from "Addams Family Values" always stuck with me.

This doesn’t happen today because the law REQUIRES that all rooms with running water have GFCI outlets installed, which has a little breaker in it that immediately shuts off the power when an overcurrent is detected.
