How can investors position themselves to benefit from a deflationary world? Jeff Booth, author of the new book “The Price of Tomorrow,” believes that technology-driven deflation is a significant challenge for the global economy. Moreover, in Booth’s view, central banks attempting to create artificial inflation through monetary policy are doomed, ultimately, to failure. In the final chapter of this conversation with Real Vision’s Max Wiethe, Booth unpacks his views on how individual investors might respond to these macroeconomic challenges. Booth’s outlook covers investing in technology with network effects as well as the potential advantages of bitcoin as an inflation hedge.

I don't understand the message here. The title says "deflationary world" and yet Booth is saying that the Fed will keep printing and therefore you need to not be in cash. If that's true, then it isn't a deflationary world. In a deflationary world, cash is appreciating faster than other assets so you would absolutely want to be in cash. What am I missing here?

He’s saying exactly what’s happening today. Money is rushing from the fed and treasury into the network effect stocks like the FAANGs. Prices are rising but underneath deflation is happening, people are being laid off and money velocity is slowing. I would have a position in both assets with some cash, just in case prices dip in certain sectors

@@williams9291 money velocity being low is a deflationary force, but I wouldnt say its representative of a deeper underlying deflationary spiral. I think that is a big jump in reasoning. Asset price inflation has been happening in the equity markets for the past year. The only reason goods inflation isnt rising like crazy is because demand is low from the pandemic. However, when we come out of it with the vaccine more and more, demand will increase, employment will increase, supply and prices will increase to match the demand with higher levels of money in the system due to monetary and fiscal stimulus seen on the scale of WW1 spending. You start seeing the whites of inflation. While asset price inflation is currently a mask for temporary deflation, it will not last once this vaccine creates herd immunity among all Americans. That's when tech starts weakening, inflation starts rising due to all the savings finally being used, and the Fed is forced to raise interest rates. The guy even mentioned Venezuela as an example for why bitcoin would have helped them. It is because they devalued their currency through hyperinflation. Now we arent a Venezuela but we also aren't immune from inflation caused by the record setting money printing being done by the Fed.

@@Diplomastronaut I agree and I think because so many small businesses have gone out of business that may tighten the supply more when the demand comes back. Leading to more inflation and higher interest rates.
@Diplomastronaut

@@williams9291 exactly. Supply will try to match demand and it will fail due to mass bankruptcies of small businesses as well as major consumer cyclical companies. More people compete for fewer goods and prices increase for all discretionary items. Food prices have already inflated. I've experienced it myself

This is why the smart contract protocol that is Ethereum is likely to be a strong asymmetrical bet.. amongst any of the smart contract platforms out there the Ethereum protocol already has strong network effects. Developers, on-boarding tools etc..

Agreed, Add Vechain in the list for smart contract platform. They have already huge company onboarding their blockchain network that already pay with vethor for transaction on it ( Pwc,Dnvgl, Byd,wallmart,Bayer,Bmw..) . Probably the crypto with best fundamental out there
