About me:
I've been making short films for 20 years, starting at age 11. I directed my first feature film, Bad is Bad, in 2010. Made for only $6,000, the film went on to reach over 7 million views and garner critical acclaim. More recently, my short film, Will "The Machine", screened and won awards at film festivals around the world. Released online in 2019, it reached over 1 million views in just a month. I also work as a video editor, cutting ads for clients such as Apple, Netflix, and Beats by Dre.

Also +1 in the chat for Resolve. I still pay for Creative Cloud every month, but 90% of my work is in Resolve these days. Maybe cause I'm lucky and stubborn, since I vastly prefer it over Premiere these days. But again mostly solo editing work, much less collaborating currently.

Hey, I am a beginner and started using DaVinci Resolve but I see a lot of people saying if you want to get into the industry (which I would like to do eventually), you need to use Adobe Premiere. How true is that and how transferable are the skills to Premiere?

@@dw2305 Resolve has a lot of similarities to Premiere, but the reason I switched to Resolve was mostly because I hated how unreliable Premiere has become over the years. Of course, using proxies and not overstressing Premiere with silly tasks like colour grading or audio mixing (sarcasm) it can be reliable. But Resolve can do all those things and crashes maybe once a month, and only when I'm going nuts with VST plugins and insanely large audio mixing stacks. The cool thing is, with a lot of folks using both anyway, since a lot of professional projects edit in Premiere and finish in resolve anyway, your skills will still be useful and transferable. And ultimately, it's not the tool, its the editor. Use any tool that gets you practicing the art of editing/story telling. The tools can be learned, but it's the skill of editing and the taste and speed that comes along with practice that actually gets you work, not just the tool itself.

But also don't get me wrong, Premiere and Avid are extremely entrenched in post houses workflows right now, so if you ever want to assist on those more narrative jobs with teams you may need to bite the bullet and learn them. But I think what makes Resolve uniquely positioned is that it's already inside a lot of workflows, and with the cloud tool going international soon you will be able to work collaboratively on the same project as your other editors too. And share the work with colorists and vfx and mixers without having to leave the same app. At some point that might mean a lot more places will consider using it over Premiere.

I think Davinci Resolve Studio is a better NLE than Premiere at this point (it needs to be the studio version and not the free version). It is way less buggy than PP. I'm seeing a lot of professionals shift to it since it has all the tools that are needed and you no longer need the intermediate steps between the editing and colouring stages of a project.

I LOVE the immediate auto save. Resolve crashed on me the other day - first time in months - but when I restarted it, I was exactly where I left off. Not a thing lost.

Just like it was pretty obvious in retrospect after Final Cut X came out, soooo many editors started switching to Premiere circa 2013-14, the shift to Resolve will seem obvious only 3-4 years from now. I know the Fincher team won back to back Oscars working on Premiere and were really the pioneers of using it on high end motion pictures. Around the pandemic and certainly coming out of it, everyone is back on that belt tightening mode and SaaS customers are all reevaluating where their money is going every month. Just as Adobe has been slacking, Blackmagic continues to expand their expertise and customer base. It's not a good time to be a recurring charge company unless you're offering something truly unique.

Started working in razor 35 years ago, started using Premiere when it became functional, dropped premiere when it became too buggy to be used for production. Switched to resolve a long time ago, never looked back

This is solid advice, but .... perhaps a little dated in 2022. Davinci Resolve annihilates Premiere Pro in every way, I don't think using it would be a barrier for most professional editors (speaking as one, who is forced to also teach in Premiere). And as an indie filmmaker looking to edit it's going to save a lot of money (especially if it's the free version) it's also going to work better with a low-end editing system you suggest. Also while the G9, GH5 and micro 4/3rd camera's were great, I am one of the people in the comments saying - the affordability of newer full frame or S35 hybrid camera's and Blackmagic Camera's like the 6k Pro/G2 or even Panasonic's super cheap S5 are better options for those looking to get something that provides the best bang for the buck visually and is not an ultra-expensive cinema camera. It is just one tool, but actually, one tool that you want to help you compete against bigger films, not something you forfeit on immediately. The same could be said for a field recorder; there are a lot of great newer options more helpful than the Tascam for newbies with things like 32bit float or better quality Pre-amps. Especially when as you say, treating sound as absolutely key. Anyway, no disrespect meant, huge fan of the channel. 🤝

If you can live without autofocus then the blackmagic cameras are definitely the way to go. If anyone is buying a field recorder now there are a lot of great options that make the process easier with 32-bit float like the Zoom F6, and F8N Pro or the Sound Devices Mixpre II series.

Resolve is good but being gpu heavy, not for most people with weak specs. Hardly usable on most laptops too.

@@AlbowaSinema this was the case 3 years ago. Not anymore. I have a 5 year old laptop that has no issues with the latest versions of Resolve. What chokes it up is hardcore color grading and effects. But normal editing no problems

Reading this was all Greek to me! I'm a brand new person who's just now exploring the film making and editing world and most of that, I could only guess as to what it means. Right now I have a mobile phone camera, gaming PC with Vegas pro 15 (got it on sale but have absolutely no idea how to use it) All I know is I need to find a very budget friendly camera that's capable of decent beginner level productions. I don't know if I'll ever do this professionally but the goal is to dive into this creative outlet and see if I can do it well. I'm a street magician who wants to learn to make and edit my own RU-vid videos.

@Trevorious2010 the only advice Id give in the very beginning of amateur filmmaking is to at least invest in a dslr. Phone cameras have gotten really good, but they see light in a certain way, and you can immediately tell. Its one of the few things quality wise that will have people take your work less seriously from the very beginning. And plus, its just good to learn how to use a regular camera. Though you don't need a super expensive one at all.

Definitely invest the most in audio (as people always massively MASSIVELY underinvest in this!), as audio tech develops very slowly, so that can last you a loooong time! Next, support gear (such as tripods). Or lighting modifiers and their support gear. (i.e. scrims / cutters / C Stands / etc) Further down the list, lenses and lights. Last of all: the camera body!

Rent the lights you need. Only buy the essentials, like a single led, a softbox and a reflectionpanel. Maybe a sound blanket as well. Camera gear I feel you should buy so you know what you're working with - especially bodies can be finicky and there are a lot of settings and quirks you need to familiarize yourself with. So buy a video mirrorless and only rent the big boys like a RED when they're really needed.

You forgot the biggest lens tip: Vintage glass!! Start with a Helios 44-2, start taking stills and experimenting with the bokeh. Then you'll realize how fun it is shooting with such lenses and will be able to invest a bit more with Canon FDs, Super Takumars and so on. You'll have a full lens set bought with a few hundreds to $1000.

Yes, so crazy how many awesome vintage lenses you can get for extremely inexpensive and they are all loaded with all kinds of character, from different styles of haze to bokeh. That M44-2 with the circular bokeh, so proper!!

Glad I watched this while doing all this research. Trying to figure out how I'm going to shoot and edit all my beat videos without all the crazy expensive stuff and lighting. I've got a Nikon D3200 and a decent 4k Digi cam that shoots in slow motion and an iPhone but I don't have any of the crazy lighting or lenses so this was super helpful.

Facts. I think if you are pushing towards the owner operator space, like doc shooters, videographers, corporate, tiny commercial projects, small crews, online content etc... the $10K level cameras like Canon C300 Mark III and Sony FX9 can be a real sweet spot of quality and robustness for folks that are shooting a decent amount. If shooting reasonably often you can pay off your kit, usually off a handful of jobs over the course of a year and selling/upgrading is much less of a pain point. For those folks wanting to by an alexa and make kit fees off them for larger productions, I would be careful, some have found success this way, but it's often worth just renting these kits from rental houses instead, since productions at that scale usually command stronger assurances and the ability to source a backup camera very quickly, where owner ops might actually be more of a risky bet.

Another great video. Thank you. My biggest regret was not gwtting the Panasonic 12-35mm lens when it was still affordable 2nd hand. I opted for a bunch of vintage primes and 1 zoom. And the 2nd biggest regret is I opted to get tiny led lights over one big source. Worst mistakes in gear purchases. Best investment I made was a Manfrotto tripod and the o.g bmpcc. Great kit.

I’m surprised you called Resolve a lower end NLE. I maintain my CC sub because it’s industry standard, but DaVinci has quickly become a much larger part of my workflow since version 17. Mainly for the CUDA support with much better GPU utilization, and the excellent speed editor gave me something new to use, making the physical process of editing interesting again. It’s true Adobe has sense AI, and that has a lot of promise, but for a straight editor with the best color app around, the studio version of resolve is hard to beat - and is a pack in with most black magic products :)

Absolutely correctly explained, choosing the right gear and not waste money on gear which u will really use is the in ur daily shoots is the smart way to go. I hv made many of the mistakes u mentioned when i was a beginner and now i repent it. And renting gear is also a smart way. few months ago i was planning to buy a new gimble but then i thought i hardly used my last one in 2 years, bcus the things i shoot i don’t need a gimble everytime. And another great thing is that we both r youtubers but we r professional editors. i am frm India and also work as a remote video editor.

In the past 10 years, I've used the same Manfrotto tripod and monopod, and same Rode microphones. I've also used the same Voigtlander manual focus primes. But I've changed bodies from GH3 to GH4 and then G9. The projects are lower budget, for corporate and docs, but they look great. I also have the 12-35 and 35-100, but use the Voigtlanders for low light and character. The G9 is almost optimum for this kind of work; the BMPCC 4K may offer better image quality but the tradeoff in storage, ease of use and batteries would need a lot of thought.

I accidentally went down a rabit hole of finding a gimbal I really liked and then purchasing all the accessories for it (like wireless HD transmitter, wireless focus puller receiver, etc) without taking the time to think, "hmmm, is this proprietary gear really the best option for me 5 years from now when I have more budget to spend on gear". I really messed up bad. Not crazy bad, but about 700$ worth of very proprietary gear bad. I wish I had spent that 700 on lighting equipment so my shots don't look like shit.

Pro tip: I don't recommend building your own system unless you're very knowledgeable about compatibility and optimization. But if you do decide to, start with your intended editing software in mind. Find out what are the requirements and recommendations. The best graphics card for Davinci Resolve may not be the best card for Adobe Premier.

@@nitablackwood6301 here is what I will say, I LOVE my C100. It is a work horse, but I cannot recommend to anyone they buy it new today. I have had more people ask about 4k this year than ever before, so I am looking to upgrade by the end of 2022. I def think looking to the future is you're best bet at this point.

After waiting and saving up long for the perfect camera I decided to buy the Sony A7SIII. It was a tough decision because it was the most expensive thing I ever bought. and man I dont regret it. I rent it to people for 100 bucks a day in a zone of 100km around my City. After one year I now have the money more than back and built a really good network that way where I can get gigs from and get Equipment I dont have and do collaboration like outsourcing editing etc. Last month I made 700 bucks passive income just by giving my gear away

I literally did the opposite of everything you said on this Video. I originally started buying gear to film my own videos bc I would spend alot of $ to pay someone else to do it but didn't like that I had less control in the quality of the project. Over time I have amassed an inventory of cameras GH5's Aputure MC's Aputure 120D and Kino Flo Divas ( which I got for free as My job was throwing them away.) Many Lenses bought off craigslist and Built a Pretty Powerful Mac Pro 5,1 for editing. I've gotten alot better too along the way but now I'm in a spot with no customers and My Gear is getting dusty. I'll still end up using it for my purposes but It would be nice to get some profit out of it. Great Video love your channel!

Nowadays you can get the FS5 for a grand and just get the raw out license and a ninja v. The image is amazing cuz its the venice sensor without that pesky codec in the way

Just got off adobe and switched to resolve, and it's been a big money saver. Also there's this music service not as well known, called "Aduiio". Really solid quality and the subscription is for a life time, so it's also save me a lot of money

M 4/3 is great for shooting through a chain link fence. For everything else, I use my Nikon Z6. There's a local rental house that is cheaper than Lens Rentals

I bought a Nikon D5300 for $125 with a 50-300 lens and just recently spent $400 to get a Nikon D3200 with 3 lenses (Sigma 17-50, Nikkor 35mm Prime and a spare 18-35mm kit lens) and 3 more batteries plus a third charger . I don't feel there's anything I can't make with that setup. I can do 1080p60 on the 5300 and 1080p30 on the 3200. The worst part is now I'm still sitting around saying, just need more lights, more softbox options.. and a gimbal, and a dolly, maybe a crane... aaaaagh. It never ends :)

Great video! I enjoy watching your videos. The camera isn't the most important thing for a film. The story is the most important thing. The camera is just part of the many things that make a great film. I have watched many tutorials over the years and I have always wanted to make films but I have never gotten around to doing much other than just some videos on an old VHS camcorder years ago. I was at a store the other day and saw a Panasonic G7 and a G85. Not sure which one to get. I have looked at reviews for both and both sound really good and I have watched many short films on RU-vid that were filmed with these cameras. Between Sony, Canon, and Panasonic I still am not sure what to get. Any recommendations on the G7 and G85? Thanks for any tips.

I do think the computer part is outdated, having Davinci Resolve and a good PC, (I run a RTX 4090) doesn't only allow you to skip the Proxy step, it also allows you to use all the great new AI features, allowing you to fix things in post that you couldn't quite get right on set. Davinci Resolve Depth map and Face refine are absolute gamechangers in my mind. (in terms of relighting your shot in post)

I've completely switched our company over to Resolve simply because Premiere's engine is garbage. I have a beast custom editing rig and I struggle editing 12-bit RAW. But in Resolve I don't. It's lightning fast and much better than Premiere. The cheap alternative to the Sachtler FlowTech is the Manfrotto Fast legs and ball head. I have the Nitrotech 608(I think?) head on the Fast legs and it works the same as Flowtech legs do, but at $1350 instead of $2000 so quite the savings and it's an incredible carbon fiber tripod with a really great head for the price. It's no O'Connor, but it's done well for a lot of shoots I've put it through. There are certain things I feel like you need in a camera. Minimum would be 4K 10-bit capability and with a log curve. The videos I watch from amateur companies compared to the stuff I shoot with my company is night and day because they use 8 bit baked in color whereas I always shoot minimum 4:2:2 10-bit or 12-bit/16-bit RAW. My color always looks better, quality looks exponentially more professional, and my gear will stand up to the test of time. 8-bit is already outdated yet people will buy cameras that only shoot 8-bit instead of saving up for something better not knowing how much of a difference it will make in quality. Save up for a camera that shoots good color and you will put out better content once you learn how to use it and how to color correct and grade it. Then you can take that portfolio and leverage it for higher end and better paying clients. But as a Creative Director I would never hire someone who doesn't know their way around 4:2:2 10-bit at the very least. You don't NEED a Red, but you do need something that doesn't shoot 4:2:0 8-bit which already looks bad in 2022.

Only film gear that holds value and sometime goes up are lenses... Good glass is the best investment. Also good audio equipment is buy once cry once. Aint gonna a new 416 or schoeps coming out soon.

I agree with everything .. I would argue the Davinci Resolve bit though. Fully integrated editing, effects, colour grading and audio workflow in one piece of software with the Studio version costing half of what a year sub to creative cloud costs and lifetime updates, even the new versions. Yes, if you want to get some of the hardware that goes along with it, it will get pricey, but you can do everything without it. Good sound, excellent tripod, and an expanding lighting kit (GVM, Godox & Neewer make great budget LED panels) for sure are big ones, a reasonably good camera and decent compliment of lenses, then fill out the kit with the bits and bobs (can't say enough about velcro & bongo ties, shower curtains and good quality tapes) to get the job done right.

I am thinking to switching from Premiere pro to Resolve. I didn't decide it yet, but I want to try it someday. When Premiere crashes it's so distracting and annoying. BTW I have my own customized PC and I don't want to join Apple eco system.

Hard disagree on Premiere vs Davinci. I have a lot of xp in Premiere, but have been using Davinci for the last couple years. A one time purchase of Davinci Studio and you have the same software that edited basically every major film you've seen in recent years. SO MUCH more powerful than Premiere and you OWN it.

BMPCC6k pro is a relatively cheap cinema camera for what you get. its the most used in my arsenal for jobs that need "the look". when lower end prosumer grade cinema cams start around 6 grand its really a good deal.

I see mostly people keep 200 watt light on 7-15%. How much light (in watt) is required for RU-vid videos. I mean for "head to chest". Is 60w light will not enough on 30-50%?
