Forbes did a survey of the best winter Olympic games and Lillehammer Norway was by far the best---Calgary actually finished ahead of Vancouver (by quite a large margin) and also made a profit--Vancouver barely broke even

david graham And why Lillehammer? Tonya Harding vs. Nancy Kerrigan, that's why (though in the end, Oksana Baiul outskated them all)!

Even way better than that stupid fifa world cup. It's worthless
@bufnyfan1

because Norway is a winter sports obscessed country--there isn't a town or villiage there that doesn't have a ski jump/ski facility etc etc---the organization/atmosphere in Lillehammer in 1994 was far and ahead of anything before or since (including Vancouver-which couldn't even get the torch ceremony right)

It really is amazing to think about how everything played out, or how things might have been different. If there was home snow for Alex Bilodeau, no home sheet for Kevin Martin, no home rink for Joannie Rochette, no home track for the speed skaters, no home ice for Sid in OT. Who knows what might have happened to all that if it wasn't at home? ........ But it WAS!!! And it was all historic!

@scorpioninpink Half were in Andorra, the luge track in France some mountain events/hockey in Jaca, Spain which also bid for the 2014 Olympics. The plan was too spread out for them to win. Besides Andorra has never won an Olympic medal, which means the IOC is extremely unlikely to award them the games.

The opening and ceremonies were bland, but the action in Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic games was very exciting. Both the United States and Canada did really well. The United States broke Germany's 2002 Salt Lake City mark for the most total medals in a single Winter Olympics with 37. Canada broke Norway's 2002 Salt Lake City mark for the most gold medals in a single Winter Olympics with 14. Germany and Norway did well. Russia? Disappointing.

Calgary 1988 was far better run, a much better games (at least they had snow!!) and made a much bigger profit than Vancouver ever did-in fact when everything was worked out Vancouver broke "even"
@ThatBigCactus
@ThatBigCactus 10 лет назад
Yes, David, that is what's important. Profit. Because that's what makes the olympics special for everyone right? I'm sure we can all look back on those 2010 games and remember that we didn't make a profit. Because thats what Canadians remember right? And can i ask you, how many gold medals, or Ice hockey championships do you remember us winning in Calgary? What "run" are you talking about? Vancouver 2010 was by far the best olypmpics Canada has ever participated in as well as hosted. That comment must have come out of your ass.
@bufnyfan1
@bufnyfan1 10 лет назад
ThatBigCactus Tell us---did professional NHL players play in Calgary??? NO--were the games in Calgary opened to professionals?? NO---so don't compare "memories" between these two games---Forbes did a study on the most successful Winter games of all time----it was Lillehammer 1994 followed very closely by Calgary---Vancouver (no snow, no profit, transportation snafus etc) ranked right near the bottom
@ThatBigCactus
@ThatBigCactus 10 лет назад
Thats all you needed to say David, Canada's best didn't even compete in Calgary. We didn't win ONE SINGLE gold medal. It was a failure. Not a success. No link to your beloved Forbes "study"? Are you sure it really exists? or are you realizing you're wrong? plus, one study doesn't make anything true anyways. So let's get this straight, your criteria for a "successful" winter games are -profit -snow -transportation Are you really so dense? "successful" only means that the IOC and its partner companies made a lot of money. For the other 99% of the world, we couldn't care less about profit. That's not what the olympics are about. Also, your logic is that, because professionals weren't allowed to compete in Calgary, we can't compare the memories? Do you have a brain tumour? No matter who was playing, the moments in Vancouver trump all of Calgary. I don't know where your massive Calgary bias comes from, but anyone with any small amout of rational knows Vancouver was the best.
@bufnyfan1
@bufnyfan1 10 лет назад
ThatBigCactus You're the one whose "dense"--to explain it in a simple way even you can understand--I'm not talking about performance/gold medals---I'm talking about logistics/venues/organization/civic participation--and that's where Calgary far outperformed Vancouver--Vancouver didn't even have enough snow no less-they couldn't even get the flame lighting ceremony right--and even when this "joke" of a torch was lit the average tourist wasn't allowed to get near it for photos---I was at both games--Calgary civic pride was on display every day--they invented the idea of a downtown medal awarding area so the average person could watch-there were no traffic snafus and they held the opening and closing ceremonies in the open instead of some stupid domed stadium--the only person who thinks Vancouver was better I bet is only you--tell me were you in Calgary in 1988--if not (and I'm sure you weren't) then you have no business saying Vancouver was better--read the Forbes review of the best Winter Games---Vancouver is not on the list---Calgary is (2nd only to Lillehammer)
