We'll look at the details of ionic bonding, using sodium chloride as an example. Both atoms have unfilled valence shells, which are the outermost energy level. Electrons are transferred from the metal to the nonmetal, creating ions with an opposite charge. The atoms are then held together because of the attraction between the opposite charges.

I'm going to make a video on this topic very soon, but the short answer is that the electrons always go to the nonmetal. Nonmetals are very greedy, and they're able to steal electrons away from metals. So in ionic bonding, nonmetals always become negative because they steal electrons, and metals always become positive, because they give away electrons.

@Lisa.pizzza

Same, just because someone knows the subject well, doesn't mean they are a good teacher. There are very few GREAT teachers out there.. the ones that really want their students to absorb the information.. I feel some teachers love the subject, but they aren't really wanting to help students grasp the information.. Reading off powerpoint's isn't enough.. we need it broken down. At least I do.. LOL
@rannov.4707
@rannov.4707 6 лет назад
The reason why many actual teachers explain too little is because think about it: He/she has about 20 students, half of them don't understand, so the teacher has to explain it to them again. The people who understand it in the first try have to just wait until the teacher has finished explaining it to the other students. The RU-vid teachers, on the other hand, don't have to deal with the students who don't understand. If people can't understand, they can just rewind and focus more on it. TL;DR: RU-vid teachers have to explain once and it takes less time.

I'm always confused with the signs -1, +1 because I take the symbols mathematically (add and subtract). Chlorine have -1 charge now because it got additional electron from Sodium, right? And Sodium now have +1 charge because an electron was transferred to Chlorine and the proton is now dominant. Sodium is no longer neutral. Is my understanding correct?

So why do atoms "want full outer shells"? I would have assumed they would just want enough electrons to match their protons positive charge. So what mechanism is actually pushing the electron over to the chlorine?
@leiflindquist7972
@leiflindquist7972 8 лет назад
So it can be stable. It is not a stable atom if it doesn't have a full shell. I don't know why it isn't stable if it doesn't have a full outer shell.

I'm really sorry about that. I feel your pain and I know you're in a tough position, but it also kills me that we infantilize students to such a degree. I know a lot of young people, and I think it's fair to say that pretty much every kid over the age of 12 frequently hears the phrase "pissed off" and uses it often themselves. By high school, kids are swearing left and right, and they're watching R-rated movies with adult language. I'm not saying that we should accept students using terrible language (particularly in a classroom setting), but must we really shield their virgin, innocent, precious baby ears from the egregious, filthy phrase "pissed off"?!?

Outstanding energy, Tyler!! Undeniable visual aids, and don't listen to anybody tell you to hurry up---> repetition is ALWAYS key to delivery, no matter how simple some think material. The way you dish it, even an old moron like myself eats it up!!! I'm not even in school, but you have me learning!!! Keep turning and burning! God bless, brother!

Being a middle school science teacher, I never have to teach this so this information got lost in the memory bank. Now that I'm teaching a high school class, I needed a refresher on this material and this was well done. Very well done. I also make teaching videos for my students but I really like your style and it's inspired me to try to make some new videos in this fashion. Great job. Your students are lucky to have you. Cheers!

This is what geniuses are made of. Your way of going into tiny details are so cool, simple and comprehensible. If you were my science teacher when I was in my high school or let's just say if you had been an author of the science textbooks for intermediate school I would have been a genius. You rock! More videos please.
