If you buy the correct RS232 to Bluetooth adapter and have a bit of soldering skill (just to solder stronger wires to weaker ones), you can control your iOptron SmartEQ Pro wirelessly with an Android tablet or phone.
It seems I forgot to include the part that shows you how to set SkySafari Pro to recognize the iOptron SmartEQ Pro mount. It's in Settings... Telescope... Setup. Choose your mount from there.

I just finished mine and tried it on my iOptron SmartEQ Pro and it works great..

Nicely done tutorial! I made a similar setup for my ETX-125 using the same BT adapter. Thingiverse has a 3D model you can print to house the BT adapter. It has room for a small LiPo battery. A 500 mA battery should last for quite a few hours as the current draw during operation is only 40 mA. Also, for others trying this, be aware that before theSkySafari software will communicate with your scope, you need to go into settings and change the telescope from demo mode to your specific scope/mount type and also select whether your are in Alt/Azi or equatorial mode.

Heyo, just a friendly remind to people who have been working on this for weeks and can't figure it out like me... there's a settings tab in SkySafari. Settings > Telescope > Setup. Changed that and it worked like a charm. I have mixed feelings right now :(

Seems to work great! I have bought a few of these modules, but I can't seem to get them to be able to be discoverable, let alone have the blue led light up. Did you have to go through anything to get yours to work?

Hi Dave M, have have you tried it with your ZEQ25 mount? I have the same mounts as yours and I'd love to make this work. I tried iOptron StarFi wifi adapter (2 of them actually) and I ran into issues. I am using a few active USB cables (~25 m long in total) to control my mount from laptop, but I also have a Samsung tablet and would love to use Bluetooth. BTW, great tutorial!

Hi, Great project. could you use just a HC-06 Wireless Bluetooth Arduino PI JY-MCU Serial RF 5V Transeiver Module instead. Then provide direct external power. This would mean you would not need the DB9 DSUB Breakout Connector ? I guess the unit you use has the advantage of easy power connections. Also if you use a Lithium battery on your Bluetooth adapter and then apply power through the USB will it charge the battery?

Good how to, but why don't you just hide that tiny RS232/BT PCB with the antenna, which you have piggibacked on the connectors plane right inside of your mount or hand controller instead? You will save on cables and connectors and also avoid tangling cables and bulky boxes clutter around your scope. ;)

I'm currently wondering how you come up with the idea of reversing the pins?! Very Best

Just ordered the adapters. Has anyone tried this with stellarium? I've linked my telescope to stellarium and it worked great. This I hope will now really just make it wireless. Rather than being tethered. Will try it with SkySafari too, but with all the issues I'm reading. Stellarium may be another option. Also, Stellarium works with a Mac too. To all those Apple users. Oh...I don't have an IOptron mount. I'm using a Celestron mount. I have a couple different models and will try with all of them. Maybe make a follow-up video to add to this. Solve some issues or offer different options. One option if anyone is up for it, is ArduinoScope. Can DIY or now by a completed controller. Works with any mount. Even if your mount isn't computerized. With ArduinoScope, it can be. Just wanted to share.

Hey swampfoot - great tutorial. I have the Ioptron ZEQ25 which uses the same handset. Will this work for the ZEQ25, not just the SmartEQ?
@swampfoot
@swampfoot 6 лет назад
Thank you Dave! I would assume it would work on the ZEQ25, since as you say it uses the same handset and presumably the same firmware. If you try it, be sure to do a tutorial that's better than mine, I left out so much stuff about configuring SkySafari!

I was under the impression that a star alignment had to be done and centered in the EP using the hand set so the scope/planetarium program knew where the scope was actually pointing correctly??
@benjamindover5872
@benjamindover5872 9 лет назад
Shevill Mathers The iOptron SmartEQ Pro actually has a small scope built into the polar axis, which you'd first point at the North Celestial Pole, by lining up the star Polaris with the correct point on a clock scale etched into the polar scope viewfinder. You do this NOT with the hand controller, but the azimuth and altitude adjusters on the mount. Also, the mount has to be level with the ground before you start. After you have a good alignment on Polaris, then you switch on the mount and enter your current GPS coordinates, accurate local time (down to the second) and do a two-star alignment with the eyepiece or camera. After that, the mount should point pretty accurately.

Ben Dover Hi Ben, thanks for that, as a non iOptron owner I did not know this, maybe a point to add to your video for folks like me and potential buyers. Regards, www.shevillmathers.id.au

Shevill Mathers Unfortunately it is not my video!
@alexkoukarine9131

+Shevill Mathers The planetarium app knows nothing. It just sends the RA/Dec coordinates of a GoTo object to the mount's controller. So the mount alignment must be done beforehand according to the mount instructions manual.

Hi Just purchased the Bluetooth adaptor . There is no blue light flashing at all just the red one .
@swampfoot
@swampfoot 6 лет назад
hmm, I wonder if it is defective out of the box? Mine starts flashing blue as soon as I power it up via USB. Or maybe the more recent versions did away with the blue light and use another means of showing status?
@Revtech314
@Revtech314 5 лет назад
I have purchased 3 of these and have yet to find one that works. All show red light, but two show no blue light. (sometimes one might light dimly but not blink when applying power). On the third one the blue light lights up and flashes and I am able to pair it but then it drops out. I'm beginning to believe the Chinese companies are selling bad modules. There is a small chance that the modules may be programmed wrong but reprogramming them is beyond me at the moment.

I just read on another site comments by 2 users that without a battery the unit will not work because the 5v usb port will not supply enough current. The usb port actually charges the battery. It is clear that swampfoot's unit works with only a usb 5 v input, but for those of us who have non working units hopefully the addition of a battery may fix the problem.

Has anyone got this to work using Skysafari on an IOS device?
@swampfoot
@swampfoot 7 лет назад
Unfortunately Bluetooth in iOS is badly hobbled (it's meant for audio & phone only) and cannot do these kind of communications.
