This is literally the video I’ve been looking for after a few days of research. I don’t want to make my MacBook useless and I definitely want the advantages of a touch screen. I have almost everything you do except a smaller monitor so this applies amazingly

As someone who owns an iPad Pro 11 inch (2020), I’m seriously considering getting a MacBook. Now, here me out. I’m a student. Both are portable, which is perfect for being on the go. For online lectures on Zoom + multitasking, I’m thinking of using the MacBook. This is because using Zoom + trying to do work simultaneously on the iPad doesn’t feel natural and it’s also a pain because of the camera position on the iPad. So my thinking is use the MacBook for personal study and writing my essays, attending lectures etc. And use the iPad for note taking on campus, airdrop (work on files when I’m not using my Mac) and personal media consumption. I think that way it’s best of both worlds, and because of the ecosystem, I can still pickup on where I left off with an essay on either device, so if I’m in a rush and don’t have room for the Mac, I can pickup my iPad, and vice versa. Would like to hear some opinions on this idea. :)

Have you considered an iMac? Price point is similar if you are looking at getting the new Macbook Pro. I recently decided to upgrade my 2016 Macbook pro to the 2021 iMac and it's amazing. I'm in nursing school so I'm constantly on the computer studying and I love being able to split screen without ruining my eyes. I can even split my screen into thirds and still be able to see. 10/10 would recommend for full time students.

That’s what I was thinking too! I currently own a MacBook and I want something more potable since I’m a student and carrying notebooks and a MacBook is a bit of a drag. Along with my belongings and essentials. The MacBook is great and all but it’s not the most portable and doesn’t allow a lot of desk space. So I’m thinking of purchasing a portable iPad

I also run this setup (MBP and iPad Pro) and it’s great. It took a lot of time to save up for it but I don’t regret it. It works especially well as a college student.

Lora kinda. I’m a computer science student, so a computer is necessary. Since I’m an engineering student at a liberal arts college, I have pretty good mix of classes. For my math classes, or number-involved science classes, the iPad is great because I use it as a notebook. For my liberal arts classes, the iPad is also great. I use it for typing notes. For my CS classes, I literally cannot use the iPad. It has to be my laptop. I also work part time as a web developer, so my Mac computer is necessary. But honestly, regardless of what your taking you’ll probably use one more than the other. Even with my situation, I use my iPad like 60% maybe 70% of the time if you include lounging around and watching youtube vids, reddit, etc. hope this helped.

If your a student and can afford both, My brother finds it very useful. He has a m1 MacBook Pro, and uses that for school. I let him borrow my iPad Pro whenever I don’t need it and he uses the iPad for classes that he needs to take notes for. Then uses the MacBook for google classroom assignments, essays, etc. he says note taking on the iPad is much more enjoyable than pen and paper or laptop. Doing assignments and heavy workloads on the MacBook is much better than the iPad in his opinion because of the OS and screen.

I have been 100% iPad for 3 years now, I’ve owned iPads since iPad 2. I love the 500 apps I have, plus it does everything my MacBook would do, but does it a little slower. Now with the keyboard i can do stuff even quicker

I’m sure most of us can’t afford both of them. I also have a 49 inch monitor on my desk, which is connected to my pc. And I use an additional I pad pro. I chose I pad pro, because I don’t need a mac pro since I’m not using such qualified apps for editing. If you have a pc like me, go with I pad pro, because you don’t need a laptop.

that's what I did. PC and ipad pro meet my needs very well. One is for the hardcore productivity (which I don't even really do, and I would bet most people don't), and the ipad pro is my portable work machine

I love this setup and I have actually decided to order it. my biggest gripe with it however is that I want more opportunities to use the iPad for work. There are two things which hinder using the iPad: 1) you can't easily switch the mouse to the iPad since it will be paired to the MB (are there any easy ways to switch?) 2) the monitors aren't connected directly to the iPad so they can't be used without the MacBook. So the opportunity to explore the iPad OS as the daily driver is less available. However this is probably for the best.

I don't understand why you leave your Mac in clamshell mode. Why don't you use it in extended display mode, the you would have 3 screens, the MacBook, the monitor and the iPad?

The IPad Pro 2020 is a beast of a machine. Been using since the first IPad Pro since 2015. I have the 16inch MacBook Pro, I barely use it though. Magic Keyboard/IPADOS GAME CHANGING

I'm 13, already have a Macbook, and definitely don't need an Ipad for school... BUT I REALLY WANT ONE. I've always wanted one since I saw the new iPad pros come out in 2018. I was saving for one until my parents got me a MacBook Air for my birthday, though I was still overwhelmed with joy since my sucky Chromebook was dying and I gave up on hope thinking I would get one, I just can't get over the fact I want an iPad. I'm homeschooled and use google classroom and I'm in 2 online classes, an iPad would be GREAT for that, and I REALLY want to start digital art. My dad literally said that he knows I want one but that I don't need one, I agree but I still really want an Ipad pro... And I have a monitor so I use my MacBook and monitor for school, I really don't need one. But, maybe I should accept that and still get one 😏

My MacBook Pro that was a few years old finally died when i spilled a cup of coffee on it, so i replaced it with an ipad pr and magic keyboard. I dont use it for anything crazy, just emails, content consumption, and some stock trading so the ipad is probably a little overpowered for my uses. Its been great so far. I really love being able to just pull the ipad off the keyboard and sit back with a video, and the 120 hertz screen is awesome.

you really shouldn't run it clamshell ... leave the lid up with the screen off... it will improve performance by allowing better cooling almost a 10% difference for real! just trying to help ! dig the setup!

If you use an app called Alfred it will allow you to use the option space bar to search with the setup. It works great over the standard Mac search. Great video and thanks for the recommendation on the setup. I'm giving it a try now.

So I have a MacBook Air, and I'm thinking about getting an iPad Pro to utilize it as a second screen. Let's say I don't get the magic keyboard, pencil, or a mouse. Can I use the trackpad and keyboard on my MacBook Air in the iPad screen? Like if I had a word document open on the iPad screen, would I be able to slide my mouse from my MacBook Air screen and see it on the iPad?

Depends. Sometimes Drafts, other times Apple Notes (tap to wake on the lock screen with Apple Pencil to get right into writing)

I tried a similar setup where I use an iPad keyboard to control my Mac when using sidecar. I’m having trouble using cmd+tab because it enables app switcher on the ipad. May I know if you are using a third party app switcher for your Mac?
