When you glued the hinge on before screwing it...I cried...because of how many times I've tried to dry fit hinges and completely fucked up the fit of the box.
Great video David. Questions for you: What type of glue did you use on the corners? And did you intend for the glue to change the color of the grain on the cut surfaces at the joint? What finish did you use and how many coats total?
I was searching for some ideas on how to wrap a box in leather because I want to add a pattern and I'm much better at stamping leather than engraving wood. I didn't think of doing it like this until watching your video. Beautiful! I'm going to combine it with another tutorial to create a dice tower box.
Ipe is a really tough wood to work. Please use. A mask with those exotic woods. I have scrollsawn for almost 40 years without a mask. I now have a 15-month cough and have not cut in 4 months. Dust for thought. Beautiful work.
Love the box. Thank you for showing the wood splitting when you were chiseling the cutout for the hinges. It's nice to see that anyone can have a problem and that there is probably a solution so that the project can still be finished.
David Waelder Years ago I had to make a lid for an outdoor UPS/Fed Ex/Post Office large package drop off thing......a true nightmare. I was told back then that for exterior use, sealing the endgrain with wax is a must or it splits to hell in one season.
Great box. Ouch. Saw the cut on the hand. Thats what happens when you make great things... I learn a lot when I watch your videos. Thanks for doing them.
Why does EVERYTHING in your shop say Diresta?!? Completely takes away from an awesome build. Looks like you robbed Jimmy’s shop, and closet. Brand YOUR name brother! You are most certainly talented enough to do so! Scrub everything that says “Diresta” and put YOUR name on it. Otherwise great work...if I could stop looking around wondering when Jimmy got robbed?!?
Nice work BUT: No riving knife/splitter on table saw? No dust mask when sanding? I guess you have NO interest at all in personal safety. Let's fast forward 20+ years and see how your body is doing.
David, your mom has a nice box...sorry, you stick your chin out and you get hit. great work, nice details. learn something every time when watching your work. Keep posting more work.
beautiful box. I am thinking of using this box as an urn with slight modification like adding a picture area or a plaque. What is your opinion using this species of wood. I am looking for the longest lifespan species of wood for this project. Maybe other species?
David you really did a amazing job on the box for your mom,i like how much time and care you put into it,the leather was a very nice touch, love the channel and all the projects, all the best
Please could you make a vid on how to make your finger/ box joint jig ? I like all your bind and have make your leather man knife handle. Also I have made a trench knife.
i bet your mom loved it. nice job on that. the rounded box joints is a nice touch. btw...... no one will ever steal your cordless screw gun. what happened to it, did you have a few too many beers while hanging your show and there just happened to a can of white spray paint sitting there? keep those cans in a cabinet please.
CHRIST DIED FOR OUR SINS.... HE WAS BURIED AND ON THE THIRD DAY HE WAS RAISED FROM THE DEAD IN THE FLESH, AND SEEN OF OVER 500 EYEWITNESSES AT ONCE..THIS SAME RISEN SAVOIR COMMANDS EVERYONE EVERYWHERE TO REPENT AND BE BORN AGAIN TO ESCAPE HELL FIRES....MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES FOREVER IN CHRIST JESUS
What happened from 4:19 to 4:39? you took out the wood dust from the sander and mixed it with wood glue to fill any gaps in the joint? I think that's what you did. Thanks. Just a regular Titlebond wood glue for this?
Close but no cigar. He used fine finishing dust from the sander mixed with tung oil to fill the gaps after applying the first coat of tung oil. After that he sanded it again and gave it second tung oil coating.. On the gluing he used wet systems two part epoxy, seen 2:17 on left, mixed in metal container on the right. Only place he used regular wood glue was to connect ply into frame.... Damn i'm too good on analyzing videos..-.-
I see you guys using that sled/jig to make the cuts to join box ends and I always wonder. How does it allow you to cut the end of two boards and then offset for the other two? I see the small sliver of wood to index the work piece ...does it move? What am I missing? Another cool project, thanks for sharing, David!
Brandon Libby If you use a shim the width of the blade and place it between the index piece and the work piece you can make the first cut with the correct offset, then remove the shim and carry on, all the following cuts can be referenced from the first, offset cut.
Hey great vids and very nice work , well done. I'm making a cradle and your video gave a ideal to just butt joint the two ends to the sides and then cover or wrap each corner with a stripe of leather. What do you thank would be the best way to attach the leather. Thank you in advance and God Bless. Walter M.
David, During your video on making a Ipe Wood & Leather Box, what was the material you brushed onto the finger joints prior to sanding. It looks like the answer too making a very tight joint in those tiny fingers. Thanks. Mr. Bill
I like the idea of gluing the hinge after the lid and box are aligned. What glue did you use? NOrmally you would have to dismantle the box to finish it and then re-glue
You know sir. Yours has been the first video iv watcbed all the way tgrough for a long time. I was entreaged and excited to see what you were doing next and the final box looked fantastic. Subbed and rang the bell my friend.
Yo David, this is a nice project for that special ocasion, I was even thinking in making a few of them with the same procedure and one will have a padded cushion top, I really don't know why but women tend to use it to stick pins and needles when using it near the sewing machine. Tnx for sharing it and please say hello to Don Julio heheheh cheers man!!! :D
dude. watched the hinge instal part on slo-mo. I wanted to see how you did that (as its never shown in YT vids) still at 7:34 I caught "the finger"...fucking sweet man. nice .
