Professional musician does a comparison test of the iPhone 11, Zoom H5 recorder and Rode NT4 microphone to find out if which represents the best value. The test is focused on the microphone performance recording a string instrument - which is one of the most demanding tests that the microphones can endure!

It'd be really interesting to see how The version of the zoom with the lightening connector works with the existing I phone 11 and in terms of the Rode whether they both are compatible with that OS and whether one could live stream say to youtube or Facebook apps on the I phone and if they work while plugged in and if the stream on Facebook comes out mono or stereo on the actual live when streamed using an I phone.

The Zoom sounded much better than I expected! I think it would’ve been informative to hear the Rode into say Logic Pro with EQ etc. It would’ve shown it’s quality against the Zoom more distinctively I suspect.

Thanks for the comparison, maybe the Rode is clearer, but I didn’t feel the dimensional effect as a stereo mic vs the Zoom H5, which is the most important thing for me in my case.

The zoom does seem to have more detail at first but i think its cause the low end is dropped off. The rode has a smoothness that I think would show its benefit during a longer listen, also the rode picks up the dynamics of the vibrato more palpably, its more "there". Nice compare and excellent playing!! Thanks! (Someone mentioned it... I think the nt4 is in mono...)

Zoom H5 with the xy straight out of the box is killer in many situations. I have stuffed it into a beat up open lid upright piano, and it sounds amazing. Brilliant for capturing a band in a room (keep those levels way down…amps…drums🙄), solo performances. Handling noise can be really obvious so hang on with a death grip or stabilize any way you can. I used to use an Apogee mic with my older iPhones and iPads, now I think about ditching the Duet and the iRig and using what is on board. I am keeping the Zoom, though. Fantastic kit.

Your trombone dig had me laughing around 3:00. Did I mention I used to play trombone? I noticed the biggest difference on the Zoom vs the Rode at the low register, the richness of tone was much better. The iPhone was impressive, but of course not up to par. The interesting question is: what's better? The Zoom AND a microphone (or two) that costs less than the Rohde alone. Also: The Rohde, on its own, does nothing since you need something to record and provide phantom power. So I'd say one has at least 300 euros left to buy microphones that might just beat the Rohde and can be placed anywhere in the room.

Ohh woow! I didn't think that a phone could be comparable at all! I like the Zoom but I feel it also catches a little bit more of noise, so the choice is still difficult, haha. Beautiful playing btw😲 Personally, I'm looking forward to upgrade my phone without having to add an extra mic, and I just hadn't happen to find anyone that reviewed phones for audio recording until I stumbled across this rev😊It seems that companies have really put a lot of weight on the cameras, which is great, but I don't see many more people talking about the sound recording specs, and it leaves me almost unimpressed 😂 I just want to know the audio stuff! *sigh, Anyway, thank you a lot for the comparison, just subscribed!

Hi, thank you for this feedback! Yeah, it seems that the whole world is obsessed with looks without realizing that a lot of “chemistry” comes from the sound... I think that the new iPhone did a pretty nice job with audio, both on the recording and the playback side. So there is hope that there are people who care about that aspect of things.
@akschauer

I listened through older stereo speakers and Sony studio monitor headphones and the difference between the iPhone and the others was very obvious. The Rode gives a bit warmer of a sound overall, but not enough that I would choose it over the Zoom, based on this test. The low and mid register tests showed more different than the high register IMO. I think it would be interesting to do the same test at different distances as well. 4 ft., 8 ft., 10 ft., outside, etc., and it would also be interesting to see how well they all do with extreme dynamics.
@akschauer
@akschauer 3 года назад
The other good thing about the Zoom is that it can be used as an audio interface and provide phantom power with other microphones (at least you can with the H6). So you can start with the Zoom, upgrade to the Rode, and use them together.

@@theviolintech7632 I'd assume so, however, the rich operatic voice is extremely demanding of a mic's quality, and a soprano is almost always the defining factor. If a mic can handle a high soprano, with some adjustments, without having to lower the volume too much, and of course, without clipping, then it is definitely a good mic (for that genre). I don't know the intrinsic quality of the NT4, but if you really want to hear the sound it can reproduce, you should plug it into a Zoom series F, F3 or F6 for example. There it is limited by the preamps of the Zoom H5 which are significantly lower in quality than the Zoom F series. You need good preamps to compare microphones otherwise you will hear very little difference.

Listening through a pair of mixing IEMs. I wonder if RU-vid compression dramatically minimizes the differences between them?
@theviolintech7632
@theviolintech7632 2 года назад
Right! The point of this comparison is to see that if you want to put your recordings on a RU-vid and you are on a budget, where the time and money is best invested. So if RU-vid is compressing stuff in a weird way (which you might be right about) then buying a top shelf equipment will not do as much of a difference as you would hope for.

I’m listening with mixing headphones right now. I’m partial to Zoom because of the richness and vibrance of the sound. The Rode sounds really good too, it picks up so well on small details. The iPhone just does the job like some guy on a graveyard shift. I think it really depends on your industry what you will use it for. Like, for film making - definitely zoom. I think for studio, the rodes is good. For just casual vlogging, or journalism, the iphone should suffice.

You'll get way better recording micing a little closer and using a spaced pair of cardioid mics to be honest... the close XY always sounds a bit narrow and closed in.... As a studio engineer, in this comparison the Rode clearly is more sensitive; the Zoom has more top end but a higher noise floor. Regarding the dynamic range, consider that the Zoom and iPhone most likely are running inbuilt limiters. Surprising how good the iPhone mic is, albeit the least 'directional'. In a recording context, I think the Rode has it; but for streaming video, where codec quality is hugely limiting and most people are listening on sub-optimal equipment, it's questionable in terms of value - a modest condenser and some room treatment might yield better results.

Just to be sure, I had to load the audio into Audacity, and you are right. I only checked the mid register test section, but the audio in L and R channels is identical in the NT4, ie: mono. You can see the stereo mic delay between L and R channels in for the Zoom H5 and iPhone. The author of the video should remake the video. Everyone prefers stereo to mono.

Why Rode in mono?

Small criticism: Why do we hear the NT4 recording in mono? It's an XY stereo mic but it seems you've mono-summed the recording to monaural center. That's a huge shame and makes the mic sound much worse than it actually is. Stereo image is a huge factor in how these mics differ from each other.

Thank you for these videos. I bought an iPad12.9 pro for reading music. It’s excellent to recording music too ( good video and audio quality). But….I can’t use it if I’m playing, so I’ve bought the Zoom Q8-4n. Good audio quality, but the worst video quality! A smartphone is better! I’m thinking to change my Zoom with an iPhone 11…

@@larserikertzgaardringen7426 that's good to know... NT4 gives you XY config, but NT5 gives you option to do straight AB ( I forget the proper term ) anyway I bought a matched pair of small cond. Oktava 012 and they sound warm and pretty good to me. My last trick would be to record violin with XY and then another 2 tracks or R and L room mics. to blend together... like a natural real life reverb effect...

I was really surprised by the recording quality of the iPhone 11 :-) sure worse than a device only made for recording audio with larger diaphragm microphone capsules, but still very nice.

@ropeyarn

All three sound surprisingly the same, but then they have very similar elements. Perhaps repeating the test with a large diaphragm condenser would show a bigger difference. The H5 has a built-in compressor which would give you that head room in recording levels you are looking for. Just remember to expand the recording in post to drop the noise floor. All three would be bad to record a live performance because they aren't directional enough to cancel out audience coughing. Avoid using limiters because they distort the sound, just not as much as clipping.

The audio for the NT4 is mono, not stereo, so this is a very unfair comparison. I loaded the audio into Audacity. I recorded the mid register test section and the audio in L and R channels is identical in the NT4, ie: mono. You can see the stereo mic delay between L and R channels with the Zoom H5 and iPhone. The author of the video should remake the video. I'm sure he wouldn't want to be increasing Zoom H5 sales, by what might be a very clever but mischievous slight of hand to make the H5 appear better. Everyone prefers stereo to mono.

Hi, great ears! I did have an issue with the recording the NT4. I bumped one of the dials for gain on one of the channels during one of the recordings. I recorded it in stereo but one channel was quieter by about 15%. I added the gain on that channel in post production to equalize the sound space but I didn’t record it mono for sure! I have no skin in the game as far as promoting one device over another. I own the NT4 the zoom and the Iphone. Would you mind checking my other videos where I use the NT4 and see if your experiment with Audacity yields the same results? Thank you for your feedback.

@@theviolintech7632 Actually, I was leaning to the probability that this was more likely to be an honest mistake, but when you consider the tricks that people employ in marketing products on YT, you may have accidentally discovered another trick :-) It's interesting that only one other listener noticed, but I see that some commenters were influenced to purchase the Zoom based on your comparisons. This is no big deal, as the H5 is a solid piece of kit that performs well. It's easy to see if your audio is mono. Install the free Audacity and follow the simple steps in this video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Lla74qPiGQ8.html You can compare the visual waveforms of each channel. However, you will notice in the video how the left and right channel meters show different levels for a stereo recording. Those level meters for L/R channels will dance in unison if the recording is in mono.

@@theviolintech7632 I checked 2 of your videos , the NT4 is in stereo on those. Of course, to get a full appreciation of the qualities of different microphones, recording solo violin will not show up the limitations at lower frequencies which is typical of mobile devices. Try recording some kick drums with the iPhone, the differences will soon be noticeable.

@@theviolintech7632 Of course, playback system is important, but knowledge and understanding of the recording process is probably more important. For classical performers like yourself, you should try those NT4 stereo mics in ORTF configuration. It will add a spatial dimension to your recordings ( adding width to the stereo image ), the following video is good for demonstrating some of the different mic techniques: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SDpyMaPn3f8.html Also, the following video is worth watching ( part 1-4 ) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uItVI2zYnPo.html
