I have waited 2 years for this phone to come up. We are using the iPhone 12 pro max as a cinema camera in this awesome video review! Yes it still has its downsides and I wish Apple would develop more pro software features but with 10bit color and Dolby Vision alongside a beautiful design update, the iPhone 12 Pro Max Camera Test 4k is a fantastic upgrade.

VERY VERY IMPORTANT COMMENT: Literally as I was uploading this video, I got an email back from Beastgrip and they let me know after their initial testing the DOF adapter is NOT compatible with the 12 Pro Max due to focus issues. Which is exactly what I found in this video. When I did test shots on the 12 Pro and other phones the shots came out much sharper! So if you have a 12 Pro Max id hold off until they come out with a fix or updated hardware but if you have other existing phones, you should be good! Some shots were usable but Im happy im not crazy that I couldnt get it to focus right haha.

Was just about to ask you this after looking on their site! Cool vid man. And this makes me laugh because I remember looking at DOF adapters for my camcorder at 2008 NAB. And that's when Canon dropped their first video DSLR. 12 years later, I have multiple DSLRs but now want a DOF adapter for my phone! What a day and age we live in!

One of the reasons I just bought the 12 Pro Max was for the triple lenses while shooting stop motion animation. I need a short minimum focus distance for shooting tiny subjects and I was disappointing to discover that the 12 Pro Max’s shortest minimum focus distance is about a whopping 30cm. I’m working now to mount close-up lenses on the phone in order to focus much closer.

You might be one of the only youtubers I've heard actually talk about recording bitrate. Its such an important part of video recording, but its almost never mentioned in these reviews. Thank you. Also, a note for pc users, if you right click on a video file and open up the properties, yiu can see the recorded bitrate.

I can’t tell you how much this means to me. Thank you. It’s hard sometimes because I don’t live near beautiful mountains. Huge cities or own a helicopter. Just a nice little suburb and so getting glamorous shots isn’t an option so I hope to provide in depth value 👍🏼

I'm glad you understand the importance of having a higher bitrate. I often mod my resolution and bitrate settings to be much higher when recording in VR. Apple should definitely implement a feature that allows you to mod the values. It doesn't hurt them since it would be optional anyways. I doubt most users would record in these settings, but the option should be available for those who want to make use of it.

The lack of a manual mode was always my biggest complaint with modern cell phone cameras. Older phones used to give you manual controls with less capable cameras and I took some of my best shots to this day on some of those older camera phone beasts. Manual control gives me some of the sharpest portraits and macro shots... Now we have much better software and hardware and no manual controls...

I made a video on the Sony Xperia 1 mk2. While the hardware wasn’t my favorite the software is the absolute best of any phone camera interface ever created lol I’m in love with their pro camera app design.

@raphael leon I know other phones feature it by it that alone wouldn’t be big enough for me to switch platforms because I don’t want to switch to android (lack of support/ updates and native messenger etc) and I’m also tied into using Apple Pay and my Apple credit card (which is my favorite every card to use because it’s more secure than my actual bank when debit and credit cards from the bank get compromised every six months and I be had 0 issues with apples card) I just want Apple to add this feature so I don’t have to look elsewhere as they clearly are capable to put it there on a model like the pro max which is what I pre-ordered.

@@initialfocus that’s exactly it! Other brands do offer the feature but overall they don’t compete with Apple as a whole. The hardware, lack of support and updates for android and the fact that Apple Pay and the Apple credit card are now my favorite daily use payment methods over my standard bank cards (for safety reasons) all outweigh the draw of other android brands. Apple just need to add it to the pro max since it’s the no compromise big boy model. This would further justify the Pro Max and draw more interest from buyers who are into mobile photography

Thank you for speaking up about bitrate! A couple of questions, though. Mcpro24fps (Android) lets you shoot at an insane 500 mbps. Do you think that's overkill for a tiny phone sensor? Is there any point where diminishing returns start to kick in?

Great question! I talked a little bit about it while showing that app off on my pixel 4a video. The diminishing return is kinda subjective. Most people want good quality videos but also not take up there whole phone space with a dozen videos. The 500mbps are definitely larger files. They also take more processing power and the reason anything above 150mbps bitrate is listed in a red box on the Mcpro app is because over a long period of time it can wear down or cause damage to the image sensor since it wasn’t meant for it. It’s like overclocking a computer. It’ll work but it wasn’t intended for that level of processing data. So in terms of the image, more data is always good. But in terms of storage and processing power there’s downsides which is why I think most phone companies favor a balance.

@peter williams well thanks for the info and comment, but what i meant was, there is no perfect phone camera, they all have their flaws. The new iphone is good, but not perfect,..the new note 20 is good, but not perfect. it all comes down to preference. Samsung has punchier colours, Iphone has more flat images, Iphone has good dynamic range in video but its white balance still flickers alot especially towards the sky, samsung on the other hand has great white balance control, but tends to sometimes blow up the highlights. hen it comes to features, hands down sammy wins, and you can see that for example with widgets on apple now, also sammy makes their screens. On the other hand iphone is known to have a more stable and secure OS, longer support of devices. As for the sales, it all depends with who has the latest best gadget, and they keep changing yearly, too bad Huawei is gone. For me personally, i use both iPhone and Samsung devices, especially now both are having a pro mode option. also there are things i can do with iPhone i cant with Samsung, and vice versa. All i can say is, if you can pick up both without bias and enjoy the technology of both. Thanks again for the input. 👍🏽👍🏽

Nice one, I think you’re right to push the phone camera technically, after all pretty much everyone has one and people should know how they can explore the potential of these things. Solid video, dude! It's amazing what cell phones can do these days. That said, the beastgrip doesn't solve a practical problem in my mind. The cost of the cage, DOF adapter, and supports plus shipping equal out to a decent used mirrorless camera body. The only use-case that makes real sense to me is if you wanted to absolutely flex on everyone else in a mobile filmmaking competition, but I feel like there are better uses of resources in that scenario. Still cool to know what's out there, though.
