Your channel is so phenomenal. Full of facts & information that really give truth to all the reviews. Knowledge is KING & your the ONE that provides it. Fantastic 10/10
THANK YOU so much for this feedback, that was the purpose of this channel when i created it, I didn't want to offer the typical HYPE, or just read out the specs in video form like most videos after any release, I wanted to connect the dots and put those bold claims from brands to the test to protect the consumer from misleading marketing claims. Bringing truth to everyone, instead of just propaganda Thanks again for your support.
Hats off your presentation skill. Apple take notes about this man!! You have explained the most difficult elements in such subtle ways like ABC. I did not find a single youtuber answering the simple questions. You explained it so well. Kudus to your efforts and dedication. Great content and crucial information. Wish you all the best.
Thank you so much for your kind comment. Really happy you appreciated the efforts and the passion I put into my videos. Unfortunately the algorithm is not on my side since it takes a lot longer to make such videos. But who needs it when I have awesome people like you. Thanks again and please share if you can.
Another great video, your production and delivery is always top notch! The only thing I would caveat with the screen is the iPhone has a tendency to dim in sunlight to prevent overheating. Without controls to override this, a 2000nit screen could very quickly go below 1000nits after a few minutes. But absolutely agree it's such a versatile tool!
Never had an iPhone, never cared for them. But as a filmmaker, with all these new features and USB-C, I'm so so tempted. Chuck the phone into a PolarPro case that lets your mount VNDs, and you essentially can have true Pocket Cinema Camera anywhere and any time! Kudos Apple, very well played!
Yeah exactly, I have a filmmaker friend who's borderline anti Apple simply out of being Anti Conformist, but that's not why I have an Apple phone, I told him, as I suggested here, just get a work phone to have all your apps that control your lights and cameras etc..., or use to shoot with, and keep your Android phone as a telephone.
@@THEDPJOURNEYyes a DEDICATED phone which is just & ONLY a cine device with 3 Apps tops .. Watch as you notice just how powerful a tool this is as a dedicated TOOL for Work only.
An absolute legend, I know production can take a lot of time but please do more, you should be having at least a mln sub, good luck buddy and Thank you so much. can't wait for the full review.
_Your videos concerning the iPhone 15 Pro explaining the use of this iPhone in the professional realm specifically in videography is the best that I have seen thus far and I have seen so many videos concerning the iPhone 15 Pro trying to get a clear understanding of this phone in the professional domain but your videos are elite class._ _My first iPhone 📱 was the i6 after that I been an android user until started coming out with real Pro models starting with the iPhone 12Pro which convinced me to drop android because of its pro hardware for real photography; now I have the iPhone 15 ProMax: I am recording different scenes with the Alexa mini and the iPhone 15 Pro Max in different scenes. I’m color grading them both and when it comes to lighting control in editing, color grading, detail and shadowy areas, The iPhone 15 ProMax is coming out on top by one notch as I copy and paste the gradings from what I have set on the iPhone to The video of the Aria Alexa, I’m almost convinced to sell my Alexa mini_
Can we record in prores and log format using all three lenses or is it only available for main lens (24mm)? Same question about Stablization and resolution? Please reply
One of the best channel in RU-vid. The production quality and content of the video is top notch. Loved your other videos as well especially the one where you explained prores vs h.265
Sony xperia models from few years go have 4k 120fps and usb 3. Would you please let us know if you ever considered xperia, and why you find the iphone suiting for your video recording needs? Thank you, Sherof. Love your videa. I watch the iphone vids alread 3 times in a week. I know you know why. There is no video for xperia phones and their codecs. Thank you!
Thank you so much Vladimir for your compliments and for watching. I honestly haven’t tested the xperia, I’m locked in the Apple ecosystem, that’s why I’m reviewing it. I’m not doing so to vouch for it, but mainly because I have access to it. I would surely love to test the xperia, but let me warn you that all companies use all these mind blowing specs verrrrry loosely. They mainly do some technical trickery to achieve that spec, so they’d be politically correct. While in fact they’d be cheating (in many cases, not all the time of course). All that is Including Apple of course. That’s why I try to stress test these specs and scrutinise them to make sure we’re not being duped
KEEP TALKING …. Because this device is more than capable of delivering Pro style cinema grade STORIES for streaming. It’s just people who are narrow minded. I just finished a TV show shot on the Iphone 14 Pro Max with a Pro Cam App. Best of all it’s all in your pocket. Get some tools like a DJI RS 3 Mini & an Edelkrone pocket Slider with some sticks & you are now READY to start making STORIES. Write that script, get that shot list & GO be the next Chris Nolan today. Use DaVinci resolve on an iPad, learn editing & grading YES ! You’re on your way. 💪🏼💪🏼🎥🖋🇮🇹🎬
My gripe with phone is that it update every year. So I know next year will be even better. But camera nowdays update slower. Needs like 4-5 years to release new model. I know my money will be well spend. But if I purely buy phone for filming and it is not cheap. knowing next year something better will be out. Feel kind bad.
of course, but I don't think the iPhone would replace a camera anytime soon, I see it as a specialty camera mostly for Social Cinematography, which could become a thing, remember how TV shows used to have that cheap soap opera look, then they became like mini movies, maybe that's where Social Content creation will transform into. People are gonna go back and start showing off how GOOD their social feed looks
I agree .. but think of it like I do .. I have a dedicated Cine tool - IP 14 PMX, I’ll now purchase an IP 15 PMX so now I have a CAM A+B for multi cam work & it’s still cheaper than a Sony FX 3 Body without primes. Do the math & I think you’ll be more than happy.
Retired IA DP , astounded by my new 15 Pro Max and the Blackmagic app :) What is that "Accsoon" camera case? I can't see it on their website. Great info as usual. Can't wait for your review of the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Yeah the iPhone made a great leap into log, hoping to make the next leap into raw next time! This is accsoon Seemo Pro I was referring to, I'm actually gonna feature it in an upcoming episode. Stay tuned. I guess it's pretty amazing for a retired DP to have a prety capable camera in your pocket, who ever thought this can happen!
People keep making a big deal about this. Apple has been moving to USB C for years. All their products give either moved or are in the Pro rss of moving. All their chargers, for years, have been USB C. There’s no question that app,EU was going to USB C for their phones as well. This just sped it up by a year or so. But the rush likely resulted in what we see now. Instead of Thunderbolt, we get 10Bt/s. Maybe next year.
@melgross when it comes to the iPhone, their public interviews and their resistance towards the EU’s decision didn’t give us the impression they were planning to do so in any near future. But instead they seemed resistant to the idea
@@THEDPJOURNEY because they have long term concept for what they do. They don’t like being rushed into something. If their plans existed, it costs a lot of money and research to change them. I doubt this is such a big deal that the EU couldn’t have given them another year. But you may notice that it’s always big American companies that are their targets.
@melgross I see your point and I agree. It’s not healthy to be forced into something, but I’m sure after11 years of lightning port, the last 4 years were probably purely out of greed. at the end of the day, they implemented it and it seems like a great start. Now they can start improving on it and we all win
It prompted me to trade in two old cameras - one Samsung and and iPhone SE with the deals my provided it was better than a BOGO. Now I combine this with the new Free Blackmagic Camera App that also automatically generates a proxy and also writes it to the SSD or Thumb Drive I use when walking around. This has totally changed my film making. Fantastic results and I see some of the examples what very talented Videographers have on RU-vid now. It is a game changer and a new milestone in what is available to the those who makes videos. Thanks for this video which accent growing niche that this phone brings. In a year, I believe the majority of a lot of peoples video will be shot on these iPhone 15 Pro's since you always have one in your pocket. Just take it out and shoot. I got my action button programmed to launch Blackmagic Camera App now. It is that good.
Yeah exactly, BM app is such a free blessing that nobody was expecting. I did use my iPhone 14 in many commercial work believe it or not, but I was cringing when I look at the baked-in look and over sharpness. So For the first time I feel this one could change that and offer a more pro look, I just gotta test it to see if this LOG is not over sharpened, denoised, or heavily processed. Stay tuned
To confirm, I never said that Apple did this without having their hands twisted. I guess it's common knowledge already they were foced into this. Already answered a couple of comments about that, and answered you in a previous comment. Thanks for the comment
@@THEDPJOURNEY sorry you are a top G that wasn’t meant to or for you but for Apple 😇 I thought your video is hands down the best video on YT I’ve seen in this.
The presentation here is truly amazing! I know why the views are low at the moment is because of the algo but damn I subbed right away. The presentation here is also truly amazing!
@@THEDPJOURNEY I shot one music video on old iPhone 6 or 7 or 8 I don't remember, it was director's iphone. And it was around 5 years ago. Using Filmic Pro. And of course it was unable to record log or other "pro" Features. So i really hate it at the moment. Of course shooting contemporary iphone with prores, log and with proper manual controls make shooting more like conventional shooting on modern dslr. But even so it's a bad idea IMO. Image quality is not in my taste)
Keep in mind, today’s iPhone would be a perfect tool to start learning filmmaking, that’s something that didn’t really exist before. So probably if you had the iPhone 15 when you shot that music video, you would probably have a much better experience and you would’ve maybe improved much faster as well
Awesome video! Definitely subscribing. Couple of details, though... It's Apple Log, not ProRes Log (based on the white paper). You can also see that, because you can record Apple Log in h265. I realize this was a video from before, but they published the transfer function they are using, its their own curve (optimized for pixel sizes in their sensor) + Rec2020 color gamut. They don't mention ProRes once in the white paper. Second, I believe that Apple Log required a hardware change, because I think it bypasses other parts of the image processing pipeline, so I think it's built into the camera. Maybe it would be possible to record in Apple Log using the older camera, but you wouldn't get the benefit of minimal processing, reduced sharpening, and avoiding tone mapping (I think).
Thanks for watching, and yes, I understand that log has nothing to do with Peres or H264, but more to do with APPLE 😊 And yeah I heard about the hardware limitation for iPhone 14 or previous when it comes to implementing log in it. Thanks again for all the info.
I’d love to have the Mint Mobile plan on set but as usual it’s only for AMERICANS & will not operate outside US boarders. The 3 biggest leaps forwards would have to be the A 17 CHIP. Performance in a dedicated cine device like this is paramount. Sadly no 2 TB but with USB C & an external SSD like the Sandisk Pro Blade transport & hot swappable 1 TB SSD’s attached to a well designed Small Rig cage that’s great. 3rd & lastly - ACES Log .. Yes I hope 3rd party developers work it into their existing Apps. The native CAM APP in the IP is & always will be TRASH. It just doesn’t have all the controls necessary for a working DOP/ future film maker. Parting note - Yes great that BM gave us a free CAM APP BUT !!!! It’s got no 60 FPS it wont invert when the physical cam is tuned upside down, I’ve tested it thoroughly against the Pro Filmic App 7.5.3 the BM is a fine start but they need to build in a few more features to make it a true Cine working App. It’ll come in time I’m sure. Great review as always. 🎥🎬🖋🇮🇹
Thank you so much for the comment, and kind words Yeah agree with all you said, I can see this is the beginning on all fronts, so hopefully things will get better from now on. Exciting times
Soo does the ProRes Log mode disable variable frame rates and tone mapping? Apple likes to claim they put pro features into their phones, but then doesn't allow you to really use it professionally. I can't wait for the competition to step it up with their pro video modes. My Galaxy S22 Ultra shoots really good video, without variable frame rates or tone mapping, it's suitable for editing in Resolve. All I need is higher bitrate, 10bit LOG video. Fingers crossed for the S24.
Not sure, but I gotta test all this out when the phone comes. And yeah, 10bit LOG is the one that I feel is the strongest feature for “Pro” filmmakers. Thanks for the comment
Not even sure why I started watching as I’m not a film maker plus I don’t own an iPhone but the quality of your production is Amazing 🙌👏 I was say you done a better job of selling the iPhone 15 than Apple done themselves 👍
This is a great overview! But, as a Sony Xperia owner, I've had better than these features for several years now (4k 120fps HLG HDR, and recently 85-125mm true optical zoom on the Xperia 1 mark V). With all of Apple's resources, I wonder why they can't do better than the Sony Xperia series.
LOG is a MAJOR feature here that stands out from all others, I still need to see how much processing (Sharpening and Denoising) is applied, I hope not much
This is by far the best and most complete review form a filmmaker's point of view, simply amazing! wow! question: Is the Iphone 15 pro and or Max, (together with the 14pro), offering Dolby vision...? if so... is there a setting than enables it ON or OFF or is already the format of the HDR, meaning, there is no need to enable it since it is the HDR mode used, (other HDR formats are HDR10 ... HDR + & HLG...). Also: I believe ProRess & LOG can also be HDR but I believe in the case of the Iphone 15pro & MAX once we use LOG, the HDR option is turn off...? Sorry about these questions but I know you are the only one that has the answers! 😂 thanks !!! 👏 great post!!!
Thank you so much for the kind words! Always a pleasure to hear from you. To answer your question, the phone automatically detects whether the content being played is saved in HDR format or not, if it is, then it plays it automatically in HDR, you don't need to do anything about it. But when you record, you can either record in HDR (HLG), replay or edit it in an HDR color space to retain the recorgnisabel HDR format, or, record in LOG, which is pretty much the same thing, the only differernce is if you want to display it in HDR, then your edit and export need to be happening in an HDR color space. A common mistake is for people to think that HLG has more DR than LOG. They're identical, just living in 2 different color spaces
Hi, this video is very interesting, thanks for all the info. Question, are these technical features also available in the iPhone Pro 15 6.1" model? Thanks
I have a 15 pro and while the log is a massive improvement it’s still held back as a serious production tool in my opinion. Still no aperture control or any kind of ND based exposure method. The 3rd party market is a bit hit or miss as well for ND filter support. Even recording ProRes suffers from over processing. The log is much better but that weak sensor still does a lot of in camera noise reduction. It is nice it removes a lot of the noise but what it leaves is blotchy and cheap looking. Apple log goes up to +6 stops above middle gray but ISO 55 to 400 seems to clip around 79 IRE which gives us a bit over 3 stops above middle gray. Far from spectacular highlight detail. Raising ISO past 400 gradually lifts that clip point eventually hitting the max of 6 stops over the log curve can handle but at that point the in phone noise reduction is so bad it’s not really worth it. So don’t expect any sort of miracles from dynamic range. The shadow detail is pretty butchered as well so lifting up stops in the shadow detail is likely the last thing anyone should ever do. Basically don’t expect the phone to have much latitude at all to push and pull. The pixel binning of the 48 MP sensor to 12MP 4k is in my opinion the wrong move. It leads to moire and aliasing in high frequency detail. I would have rather seen a 1:1 12MP sensor for video or a full proper down conversion with over sampling. Finally I still find the 4k quality a bit brittle and weak. Edges suffer, fine textures suffer like wood grain even in good lighting. I have even seen motion blur suffer due to confusing the camera into thinking part of it is noise. If the material is converted to or used in a HD project a lot of that does get masked. Just like HD video on the older iPhones looks great as SD or 720p video. The 4k is really a way to get better over sampled HD video. Oh yeah ProRes is nice but it’s the sensor and DSP that are hurting the video and not the recording format. We really need ProRes raw which is totally possible to an external drive. Something with all processing removed where we can decide how to handle the noise.
As a professional, if I am going to put a lot of effort in lighting, crew scheduling, directing, getting talent, scheduling locations etc... Why in my right mind after all that effort would I shoot using an iPhone? When if I add a little more effort I can shoot with a real camera and stop second guessing myself. Just because someone sharpened a butter knife doesn't mean you go to war with it. You can, but you will die. You still use a rifle. Right tool for the right job. The iPhone is a sharpened butter knife. People are tempted for something they will never use. Heck a ton of videographers or content creators do not even know how to frame properly, let alone color grade. Unless you are telling me that a regular joe captures their kids first steps or every video captured by a film maker with an iphone, that they are gonna edit it, apply rec709, apply their lut, check it then send it to social media? Heck no.. they are just going to shoot it and send it. It's too much work for the average joe and any film maker who is making that effort will rather capture it using a real camera.
I had the same exact question pop in my mind when I watched the movie UNSANE, it looks prety bad. I mean geting an Emmy award winner actor and spend that much for lighting, crew and production to end up ruining it with a pohne camera. My POV here is that iPhone filmmaking was attempted, and dropped because of all the limitaitons it had that are now gone. It still has many other limitations for sure, but not as drastic as before. Which would easily qualify it as a "Specialty" camera. Like a crash cam maybe. Believe it or not, I did shoot commercial work with iPhone for brands such as Valentino and Gucci, but that was for social, I also shot a couple of Documentary scenes using a phone so people won't notice I was carrying a "Real " camera. So I can see where this can go and where it can be used. A pretty good and reliable Specialty camera... a C camera, maybe B cam at most. But agreed, not an A camera. But that's you and me. Probably Sean Baker and other directors would still use it for a full feature though. At the end of the day, the story is what really matters in all this when it comes to Filmmaking IMHO
Optical Characteristics, or Lens compression that you’re talking about are actually affected by DISTANCE from the sensor to subject, not the focal length of the lens. Because it’s called lens compression, and so much talking about the 35mm characteristics, 50mm characteristics… people get the wrong idea that focal length changes compression. No it’s not, it’s the DISTANCE. Putting this out there because I don’t want people to be misinformed.
I'm comparing 2 lenses (iPhone 24mm and FF 24mm for example) with the the subject and camera distance being constant. You're talking about the case when the distance changes, that's not what I'm saying at all.
@@THEDPJOURNEY iphone 6.9mm lens (24mm FF equiv.) and 24mm FF lens will produce the same FOV and the same compression when shooting at the same distance to subject. You said that 6.9mm on the iphone will not give the optical characteristics of the 24mm. In term of DOF, true; but if we're talking about lens compression, false.
True, if BM makes more sense to you, then for sure BM is what you should get. I'm not suggesting it'll replace any cameras, I'm only saying it's a Filmmaking "Tool". Still need to test the quality though once I get the phone. Thanks for the comment
@@THEDPJOURNEY exactly, it sure opens a lot of opportunities for the times you are at an event or situation where your camera isn't there/working. Now it's actually usefull and that's the game changer!
My BMPCC 6k is still relevant and going strong. And now with the new app it simply was the best bang for my buck in any camera purchase throughout my career.
Yeah I understand light in general is logaithmic, like the inverse square law we use in lighting our subjects, but that desn't ake 2000 nits not 2X the brightness of 1000. The incremental scale here is not considered, only the results in other words
@@THEDPJOURNEY ah so correct me if im worng, i aint the brightnest. It is still 2x brighter as the number is 2x bigger. But the impact it has on the environment isnt twice as bright?
I've had my iPhone 15 Pro for a few days. Personally, I am very impressed with how clean the footage is. One thing I can recommend to those shooting Apple Log with their iPhone 15 Pro/Max is to under expose by 1-2 stops. Since iPhones tend to over expose, doing this helps prevent blowing out highlights, etc. Bringing up the exposure in post results in surprisingly good imagery. I also recommend getting ND filters when shooting in bright sunlight. I went from the iPhone 12 Pro Max to the iPhone 15 Pro. The improvement in video image quality was extremely dramatic. I think the iPhone 15 Pro/Max will easily slip into filmmaking projects.
wow from iPhone 12 to 15 is a great leap for you! Yeah I'm working on an episode about exposing, since it's not as simple as underexpose by 1-2 stops I'm afraid, you'll know when I release it. Stay tuned
Test 4k 60 proess on stock and and also in black magic app. I have notice dropped frame rates . Not sure if it’s overheating issue. I was using t5 and t7 Samsung ssd with usb 3.2 and thunderbolt cables. In blackmagic app dropping the codec to 422 or 422lt seemed to not have the issue.
I usually set the BM app to stop recording if a frame drops, also I'm not bothering using their native app honestly, can't be shooting without having any idea what are the settings the camera decided to pick for me. Keep in mind BM app still has a lot of bugs.
I am not so interested in the pro model iPhone as a filming tool for now, the reason is about what kind of look you are going for ---- if you are going to shoot prores 4k 60p, I personally think invest a camera is a better idea: prores is a lot about reserve the detail, and the HEVC codec is already really robust if you are not doing green screen work; but if you are into the phone camera look or kind of 'super 8' look, the pro model have better lens, but will not make too much difference ---- in the end, it is a lot about sensor and optics. I can understand if somebody decided to shoot the whole film/video in iPhone, iPhone 15 pro/pro max will be the best iPhone, but if I just want to mix a bit phone footage with the real camera, I am fine with the standard model. Adding a bit more annoying thing about iPhone: I don't like the lens flare nowadays phone have, also the deep fusion technic is something I never like (though in log mode it seems ok).
You can film well on the S23 Ultra. The video quality is not as good as iPhone though and neither is the audio. Great phone, but the video quality is really low.
@@THEDPJOURNEY iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro can take 12 bit colour depth photo when ProRaw turned on. But iPhone 14 Pro and 15 Pro can only take 10 bit colour depth photo when ProRaw turned on. Why ? I don't have an iPhone, so can anyone please let me know if you turn ProRaw in 12 megapixel instead of 48 megapixel, can it take 12 bit photos ? I'm curious about this because, 12-bit = 68 billion colours. But, 10-bit = 1.07 billion colours. That's a huge difference. If iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro cannot take 12 bit photos, that seems to be a huge downgrade ! ??
Pretending what exactly? If you watched the full video here, you'll realized I didn't mention any quality yet since I haven't tested it. Besides, I'm not expecting it to be better than a "real" camera, but it'll be good enough to shoot a hollywood feature if you really have the will and creativity, others did it with the iPhone 5S 8 years ago... why wouldn't you? Unless you already shot a feature with the real cameras you're talking about.. did you?
@@THEDPJOURNEY because other than the gimmicky low budget movies, the image won't hold up for it to be great looking. It all falls apart on the big screen
