I'd like to mention couple of things - How long can you record? Watch this: ru-vid.comKTsaGILYUCA - SSD is not affected by magnets, just like the storage in our phones. (HDD is affected by magnets) - While filming the SSD drive is not in the shot, cameras are moved on iPhone 15 Pro series compared to 14 and prior. - I ended up using this amzn.to/3t8aXa7 as the magnet on ssd, which is a lot stronger and thicker, but also it gives a nice space between the phone and the ssd for airflow. - You can transfer anything from your phone to the SSD, anything that gives you the option "save to files" - iPhone won't record raw photos to SSD but you can move them later on. - I haven't experienced any heat that may be an issue, but I haven't filmed for long periods of time. - The magnet sticker I used is strong enough to keep the drive on the phone, but if you like stronger, you may wanna check out the magsafe mount part of the magnet, however they're thick, so maybe the magnet from a wallet can be nice. - ProRes HQ are gigantic files because they're not compressed like H.265, which gives you great flexibility during edit (because almost nothing is baked into the footage) - I won't be saying heif in my videos. It is H.E.I.F (this one is for Apple :))
lol, "innovative" might not be the right word. This is something that has been possible in the mobile phone space for many years. Just because you can now do it with an iPhone, does not make in innovative. :)
A friend and I were talking about this a few weeks ago. We also discussed picking up a small Magsafe wallet and slipping the SD drive into it. I think we are just minutes away from commercial products offering this option. Personally, I would prefer a Magsafe sleeve so I could put any small SSD in it.
I was just talking to a freind about this as well I thought I'll just find a big enough wallet and lo and behold the gentlemen here did a great implementation of that.
We need a usb-c hub case for “iphoneographers” ☺️ or similar. We need a compact way to attach the SSD but also charge the iPhone and attach a microphone (also a cable one)
Anyone else thinking what I'm thinking? ~ HE just stuck a MAGNET to a SSD Drive! 👀 👀 👀-- I would use 3M VHB 'sticks like a boss with no possibility data loss from the drive. Magnets and Hard drives ... yeah. Not good. VHB cheaper and holds great. ---- 👍 Further info on SSD and Magnets : Flash memory SSD uses floating gate transistors to store data, rather than the magnetic method used by hard disks. The presence of a magnetic field is not necessarily a problem for an SSD, but the rate of change of magnetic flux could cause damage.
we need a brand making a filming case where you slide in the iPhone, connect with USB-C and has SD Card slot, so you can shoot with any UHS-II SD Card. Another USB-C for power supply if needed. Would be AMAZING
Fantastic news. Now, if you can connect a DJI wireless mic receiver to that same USB C port (via a hub) to record sync sound, we'll be golden. Looking forward to your complete review.
Thank you for all your great videos, you’re so innovative and creative. Your videos are a breath of fresh air in a tech industry where everything said and shown is cookie cutter. I always learn something awesome from your videos. God bless.
In the case of the iPhone 13 Promax 128GB it only supports 1080 on 30fps and on the iPhone 13 Promax 256GB it supports up to 4K 60fps, the question is whether if you use an external SSD, the iPhone 13 Promax 128GB can it support 4K on 60fps?
Use the MagSafe Battery Pack instead, put the magnet on the MagSafe Battery Pack and connect it to the SSD. You keep all the functionality of MagSafe and avoid taping your iPhone
I CAN CONFIRM.... I have successfully recorded to a UHS-1 Micro SD Card (not a uhs-2) using ProRes. Here is what I have/did: - iPhone 15 Pro, white, 512GB - SanDisk Extreme Pro 512GB Micro SD card V30 ($52 bucks on Amazon) - UNI SD USB-C Card reader adapter ($12 bucks on Amazon) The iPhone was set to ProRes, LOG, 4k24, main camera. (91 minutes with 512GB micro SD Card) I formatted the card in my MacBook Pro 13" M1 to ExFAT. Popped the card in the reader, plugged the reader into the iPhone and recorded 1 full minute of video. No errors, no stopping. Playback was smooth. CONCLUSION: NO, you do not need an SSD drive. And also, NO you do not need a faster UHS-2 SD Card. As long as you have a fast UHS-1 card, you can do it. NOTE: This will not work with 4k30 or 4k60. If you set your camera to one of those, it WILL record, but your resulting file will end up being some wonky frame rate around 24p'ish. Basically, the iPhone will drop frame rate before it stops recording. So if you need to record 4k30 or 60, you will need a UHS-2 SD Card or an SSD. But 4k24p works just fine using a cheap Micro SD Card UHS-1.
Was wondering if you maybe had a solution for plugging in a ssd and a usb-c mic like the ones from Rode. Would you use like a small usb-c hub? Can the phone handle it, you think?
Could you please teach us, why we should use ProRes rather than Dolby Vision? (assuming you can change compression rate for Dolby Vision in Filmic Pro app) Thanks!
Two questions: 1. can you record non- prores to the SSD? 2. That SSD must have some of it's storage used or are you telling me that 1TB only allows for 144 min?
Faruk. A better idea was to get a MagSafe powerbank and then 3m tape the Samsung hard drive to it. That way you don’t have to worry about running out of battery while recording. This will probably happen before you run out of hard drive space anyway. This is what I’m going to do.
Loved this. Got my 15PM today and am digging it... but moreso loving videos like this. I MagSafe *everything* and have so many metal rings and magnets so that everything sticks to everything, everywhere. I love this and will definitely be copying. Thanks!
It's quite funny and sad to realize that Android manufacturers and especially Samsung have removed the support of the SD card which was one of their advantages over Apple, and today one of the main reasons why many "Pros" will buy the 15 Pro, it's the external memory support, and Apple is going to make even bigger gold 🥇 balls 🍒 thanks to it 🤦🏽♂️
Now put another sticker on the back of the ssd, so you can mount it on a MagSafe tripod mount and you are golden :) When you put your SSD that close, is it visible on the wide angle camera?
Is there a way to record directly to the external storage in iPhone 14 Pro max? I have one 128gb and i want to record ProRes 4k 60fps in an external storage
Great idea.. But I am not putting a sticky mess magnet directly on my $1200 i15maxpro! Instead I am buying a cheap case that is dedicated to prores shooting and mount everything on that. Then I'll slip my maxpro in and out of the setup when I want/need to shoot prores.
Great DIY. Apple should promote this more than titanium and other stuff. As an industrial designer I can see lots of potential to generate various ideas referring this concept.
One of these companies like peak design or moment needs to make a solution. Maybe integrate a camera grip, shutter button and storage into one unit with USB C
Hello, I want to ask a question, I want to buy an external storage (memory card) for shooting 4K 60fps video and what should be the minimum READ/WRITE speed?
Do you think the upcoming Samsung T9 SSD 2GBytes/s be better (less dropouts) than say the T7 for the iPhone 15 Pro for AppleProRes outputs to an external SSD ?
Faruk, I believe I have found, after much testing and much expense and some lost hair pulled out, finally a reasonably elegant and effective solution to the SSD issue for iPhone 15 pro/Max. Let me know your thoughts.
I do this with my Surface Pro 6 with an external Samsung SSD. I use Velcro to hold it in place. Wish I got the USB C cable though especially the L-shaped ones.
You may have 144 minutes of storage but only 30-40 minutes of battery so that really doesn’t help. You need a MagSafe battery pack or two to make it work!
BUYA!!! great. I decided to keep my iphone 15 promax in a ESR mag case and I added a ring to the back of my 2 TB samsung T7-works great. I don't feel comfortable having my iphone naked!..too cold here in Canada! LOL ..but now I want a small shot gun mic for the phone. I have a Rode Videomicro and I wonder if all I need is a 3.5mm to USB-C adapter to make it work with the iphone.Previously this mic would get power directly from my sony FX30-will it get power from the phone? I know I will need a USB-C splitter if I want to record to the SSD (I decided to record in Pro Res LT instead of the highest Pro res) and also have the mic connected...or do you know of any compact shot gun mic similar in size to the videomicro that already has a USB-C connector? trying to avoid using dongles and extra cables...thanks so much for your videos. Always awesome!
The phone has very limited power output from the USB-C port, many SSD's will not work because of this, so I fear that the additional power draw from the Rode may be too much, but I can not confirm because I do have that mic to test.
“Steal it” ... it's a very cool idea, yet not entirely out of the realm of possibility. Production capabilities and execution have consistently been the driving forces. Generating ideas is a simple task; executing them, however, is not. I believe that in our mental landscape and realm of ideas, we are already far more advanced than our daily reality, and this disparity exists precisely because of these reasons.
Nice seeing Apple finally back to getting some features from Android since the iPhone didn't change for the past few years... Oh, I forgot they were forced to.
I was thinking about doing this with the octobuddy. I just didn’t like magnets and hard drives together. But maybe I’m just scared. Let us know update on how you like your set up.
Thanks for the video! I have an iPhone 15 Pro and in addition to the SSD hard drive I wanted to connect an external RODE mini microphone. What connector do I need? Thank you.
Because the internal iPhone mic is not that great, especially outside dealing with wind, is there a way to have this external drive “setup” and also have a Rode mic plugged in the iPhone? Maybe it will need some sort of a double or triple usbc adapter or hub right?
Now it all falls in to place why Apple clung to the lightning port. They could control/stop people using their own storage media (amongst other things) and charge stupid prices for the higher capacity models.
I'm trying to figure out how to hook in external hard drive and external microphones at the same time? Will a splitter work? That's the question I would like to see answered.
Thanks for being first to answer a question I was pondering before jumping to getting the 15pro. Hopefully the free Blackmagic Cam app will recognize an attached SSD and will record to it. PS rather like Crucial X9 Pro 4TB as an external recording media.
Blackmagic camera app lets you select a location to save, so can be external drive or internal folder. It also allows you to record in full Apple log ProRes 4K 60fps INTERNALLY, so if you have enough storage on your phone, you can skip the ssd entirely. To reduce file size you can also record apple log in h.265 or h.264 as well as ProRes LT or any of the other ProRes formats and all of them can be recorded internally, and yes all in 4K 60fps. Not sure why Apple put the internal restriction on their own native app but who cares, the BM Cam app does everything we want!
Are there any mini thumb drives available for this? i just bought an iphone Gimble and bought the same samsung usb C drive only to find out that is not compatible :(
Great content useful Ann allows you to save money than buying that outrageously expensive iPhone storage. can you do a video on using old iPhones or android phones and use it as a dash cam? hundred percent all dash cams are crap.
I was wondering the other day how long it would take for someone to release a MagSafe compatible SSD. Glad to see I was not the only one thinking about this.
all these and that ...at this point buy a proper camera... By the way the Samsung T7 is famous to over heat so will drain the battery of the iPhone in no time...
