If you are looking for the teardown of the iPhone X, here it is! • iPhone X Screen Remova...
Today I am going to show you remove and replace the back glass on the iPhone 8. The process took me roughly 1 hour and 45 minutes, so this isn't a simple repair. For those wondering, I used a 1500W Dual Temperature Heat Gun (which costs about $11-$20) and had it on the highest level.
Required tools-
Pick
Flat blade of some sort
Heat
Patience.

Clamps I recommend with the glue (affiliate link) - amzn.to/2T8opHn

The best type of razor blades (buy 100+ cause they’re low cost and fragile[don’t pry with these!!!]) (affiliate link) - amzn.to/2YE4W17

For some reason companies are selling with adhesive, you can do that or glue, up to you. I choose glue.

I just completed this over the weekend. Thank you for the video. The whole process took almost 4 hours. Under required tools I will list patience as first!!! The original glue is extremely hard and put on in no particular procedure. You basically will be braking glass off for hours. I would mention to be extremely careful around the middle to not damage wireless charging. Again Thank you for the video.

I just spent 2 hours doing this with a lighter and flathead screwdriver on an 8 plus. I don’t even need the phone, I just broke it a few months ago and bought a new one, but decided to repair for self satisfaction. What I ended up with is a repaired phone, glass in my hand, glass all over my bedroom carpet, and an unbelievable amount of frustration. I thought it would be easier to remove if I shattered all the glass; it wasn’t.

Yep, I wanted to restore my old phone to give to my daughter for her birthday😅 I spent 3 hours only to remove 1/3 of glass(most of it ended up in my hair) and messed the motherboard beyond repair🤣 I will look for a used phone for her online instead of proceeding with this

Quick question, I ordered a dummy phone to practice removing the back. One thing I noticed is that removing the back glass with a straight razor around the side bezel of the phone was scratching the edge of the bezel. did u have any issues with this on the real iphone? Because these bezels scratch very easily.
@RealWorldReview
@RealWorldReview 6 лет назад
I gave up on the plastic bezel. I fell that you know that this will be destroyed once the back is cracked. I used metal and plastic and it still cut the bezel A LOT. Oddly enough, the heat did the least amount of damage. But yes, that bezel will get destroyed if you use metal, but once the new glass is on, you can use a flat blade to straighten out the plastic trim a little bit, but it will never be like new.

Whenever I do glass back repairs I start by removing the screen and camera since the heat can damage them both. Then I start heating up the glass in a cracked corner and start removing bits of glass but you genuinely have to be patient, especially if you don't use much heat.

I don't suggest you guys to replace a rear glass on the phone from my experience. The glue is like concrete and is like no other adhesive you know from Samsung or other phones. I replaced rear glass on a iPhone X which has same glue as the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. I will post a video soon, but be warned, better to replace the whole housing with frame and glass already assembled. It will be maybe more expensive but much faster and less chances to break something.

Is the back glass simply cosmetic in nature? Or will broken back glass effect the functionality of the phone? I have an iPhone 8 plus with shattered back glass that is hidden underneath my new phone case and the phone and camera seem to work fine. Is there any reason I should worry about repairing the glass other than the fact that it looks horrible when it's not in the phone case?
@RealWorldReview
@RealWorldReview 6 лет назад
The back is mainly cosmetic, but obviously I would assume that the phone is no longer water resistant (though it might have not been in the first place.) If there are any cracks near the camera flash, then the flash might affect the image. Other than that, you should be fine if you hide it under a case

You can replace the pad, but you need to open up the phone and remove the logic board to get to the pad. It's lot's of work for sure. I would recommend replacing the battery because of your situation. The battery life will either be shorter or cause issues in the future if using questionable or aftermarket chargers.

Good instructional video, I was thinking, how about removing the camera lens ring first, will that help you think?
@RealWorldReview
@RealWorldReview 5 лет назад
It could, but with the glass around there it'd be very difficult to retain the structure of the ring because the metal is very fragile. The best would be to open up the phone, remove the camera, and then remove the ring that way (and just buy a replacement) but it's still pretty difficult to do and requires glue of some sort as well.

For heat, once you got a start, could you use a heated blade? I.E. Take an Exacto knife or a razor blade holder and use a propane torch to just quickly heat the edge of the blade. Then when you pried into the glue, it would "melt" just the glue and not really heat up the whole phone? Thoughts on this?

Yes, but not the best when we are dealing with the battery and logic board.

True, but some heaters like this one go up to very high temperatures. I would recommend a heat pad if it's all one piece, but if it's multiple, then the pad may be difficult to use. I tried to do this to a friends phone and I was not successful. The back glass was shattered far more than in this video so bear that in mind. I completely disassembled the phone in order to ensure that I don't overheat the logic board among other things. I was at my desk working on the phone for over 5 hours and I still didn't get all of the glass off. glass got everywhere and, like glitter, It will possibly never leave my room. I also scratched up the wireless charging module, I melted the flash module trying to get off the glass which at one point refused to come off . I gave up and took all the parts in a plastic bag to a phone repair shop and pleaded with them to pull off something to get the phone working again and they managed to fix it in an hour. The owner of the tech shop gave me some advice that I will share with you all. He said that it may be better to simply get a new, fully assembled chassis, so that you can avoid melting things.

removing the back glass looks brutal and you will damage the steel rim in the process.
@RealWorldReview
@RealWorldReview 6 лет назад
Not so much the aluminum sides (the iPhone X has stainless steel while the 8/8 Plus are both aluminum), but the plastic trim will definitely get destroyed, especially if you use a blade on the entire repair.

No, the glass is too thick around the camera lens. You have to remove the camera in order to get it going.

Remove all the components inside the phone just so it’s glass and frame only 350-360c apply Heat from the back and use a surgical knife to gently lift up shards of glass. U wanna have a mount that holds phone while doing this trust works like a charm but your glass part with the camera that way u ain’t gotta do all that

If you are attempting this be careful with the blade some how i cut the volume volume buttons my blade slipped under the metal as i was cutting thru the side its better to work from the inside out Update i almost broke the camera just by pushing the camera glass up also its a bitch to install a new camera glass and ring im clumsy with glue anyways everything went well except that now my camera acts up when recording video the stabilisation shakes randomly in guessing it has trouble focusing

Any time adhesive is involved use 99% isopropyl alcohol. It prevents the adhesive from re-adhering to itself it will get sticky again once all the alcohol dissipates and of course its 100% safe to use on electronics.

When using CA glue, “crazy-glue,” it’s believed that’s rubbing alcohol will act as a drying accelerator. Either way that glue is going to be tricky not sure how else to remove it other than scraping it off once dry like shown in the vid. Great video, best how-to on RU-vid that’s for sure.

Water resistant, maybe. The question is are you willing to test it out? I think it should be splash resistant, but I would never recommend submerging your phone under water wether it is new or refurbished.

What happens to the microphone grille on the rear?
@RealWorldReview
@RealWorldReview 6 лет назад
In my case, it actually was stuck to the phone instead of the glass panel, so I didn't have to worry much about it. Depends on the repair, but you should definitely make sure that mesh is still covering it when you do the repair!
@rushilkisoon
@rushilkisoon 6 лет назад
Real World Review ahh. Thanks. I mistakenly pushed that grille in, and now it’s below the level of the glass, and the mic no longer picks up sounds. Just static
@fra1111089

1 you have to use scotch or similar 2 you must wear gloves, little piece of glass can hurt your fingers 3 you can't use that type of glue because it leave residues and mark all the plastic around it.
@RealWorldReview
@RealWorldReview 5 лет назад
All true, although wearing the right gloves feels weird and is hard to do repairs, to me. Residue means either you used too much or the excess glue was not cleaned up before the glue hardened.

that wasn't the camera lens, just a glass cover. everyone should make sure not to scratch or damage the real lens once cover is removed.
@ericjx
@ericjx 6 лет назад
Be cautious with rapid drying glues. Many of them have vapors that deposit on whatever is close to them -- like a camera lens inside the housing that cover is being glue onto. My newish X has a bit of a groove etched into it due to a shitty case (sand got under the case.) Hopefully it won't propagate into a crack on a drop.. this looks like a nightmare.
@RealWorldReview
@RealWorldReview 6 лет назад
This is why I recommend opening up the phone. It allows to glue to dry and has a smaller chance of that happening. I've seen it before and recommend opening up the phone especially if the camera glass doesn't come with adhesive on the glass already. Regarding the groove, I had that happen on my iPhone 8. It is a painful reminder that Apple put glass on the back of these phones.

Why would hold the phone while applying heat to your hand and phone.
@RealWorldReview
@RealWorldReview 5 лет назад
To make sure you're not adding too much heat. Your phone can handle a little more than your hand, so if your hand is getting hot without being directly under the heat gun, then you know it's time to let the phone rest for a second and start picking at the glass

Not sure. Says it goes up to 1,110 F, but that sounds outrageous. Another one I use tells the temp, and generally that one is used from 400F to 600F (204C to 315C)
