A correction: the Pixel Fold DOES have facial recognition, unlike I stated in the video! Regardless, what do you think - would you pick one of these up?
Yep I went for the Flip, tho. I love it but the first time I dropped it, it landed right on the hinge and was TOTALLY broken. I have never, ever had a broken iPhone and I used to drop them all the time.
The pixel phone is the first one I would consider. I like that it focuses more on the main screen than the folded screen. Because I only ever consider folding phones during the 10% of the time that I’m using my iPhone and feel like I want just a little more real estate for pictures or videos or something else like that. So I like the Google pixel is a normal phone until you want more real estate as opposed to the Samsung, which has a very tall and skinny shape… Of course, I don’t know if I can replace my iPhone with an android. Nothing against android, I’m just in an ecosystem. The bezels don’t bother me. It allows the phone hinge to close completely, I don’t mind the bigger bezels.
Yes you can. Im a lifetime ios user and before the pixel fold was released I used an iPhone 14 and purchased a zfold 3 on facebook marketplace. Wanting a more portable tablet, I put a data only sim card into the fold (that id swap out between fold and iPad pro). I loved the zfold so much as a portable tablet, when I got the pixel fold, I dropped the iPhone and made the move to one device
At the £1749 price point, it’s going to be nothing more than an enthusiasts purchase. All this build up for years and they’ve not only missed the boat but priced it beyond most mortals budgets 🤦🏽
I do love the pixel fold and I am so happy for this awesome phone I love love it u will not go to the Samsung phones husband love Samsung phone but I love this phone
I had the Z Fold 3 and 4, but left because of reliability and Samsung support and lack of service. Used the 7 Pro, but had overheating issues. Glad to see you’re getting good service out of this. Went to the iPhone 14 Pro, Max, and boy do I miss android.
Grest video. Too stuck in my ways with iPhones...but...I might just give this a try. Steep price, though I can see how the novelty factor of a foldable and that gorgeous OLED screen may just justify it.
Hardware-wise I prefer the Fold 5. But I really wish I could have that pure, clean Android experience. There's too much bloat and too many duplicate apps with Samsung. Still, if you can get around that, I do think the Samsung Fold is a better device. Plus, Samsung was willing to give me $1200 credit for my trade in, so I only paid like $500 for the Fold 5. Now THAT'S a bargain. Maybe next year, I can trade in the Fold 5 for the Pixel Fold 2. Let's hope Google will have a good trade-in deal!
I just recently got the Pixel fold and I've been a iPhone user for this years.. this is the first year I was not that interested in the iPhone 15 series, because the Pixel fold is great device..
I think you don't get an under-screen fingerprint reader because of the folding screen. If you open it straight up without unlocking it, how do you do so?
Mark, I have the pixel fold also and am in the UK. My call screening does not record audio or transcripts. Does yours work? Nobody is talking about this feature not working. I have been in contract with google but they are not very helpful and they are looking into it. Hopefully when it is more widely available it will be discussed and then resolved.
It's a shame tjat the phone is so bad in many ways. 1. The bezels on the inner screen. 2. Bad display inner and brightness is low 3. Bad hinges 4. Awful creese the worst of all foldables. 5. Super slow charging 6. Their UI is not good either 7. Tensor chip is not good vs look at apples chipset or Qualcomm instead. It's like having Samsung exynos which is a terrible chip. Make changes and improve it for next foldable but keep the aspect ratio and you will have a superb phone for sure. Look at Samsung fold 6 coming soon and also oneplus fold and don't forget honor also. They have so much going for them. Come on Google you can do much better then this.
In screen fingerprint readers suck. Much rather of it on the power button. It is much easier to find in pocket and have it unlocked before you pull it out.
With regard to the under-display FP sensor, it adds costs as you will need one on each display, rather than one on the side as Google and Samsung do. These are expensive enough without further costs especially as ultrasonic licences from Qualcomm are not cheap. I am not bothered by the black sidebars on apps like Twitter and Instagram. I know some people get very upset, but even with the bars the apps are larger than on the front display and offer a better-optimised look as they are designed for phones. The black bars mean less battery consumption. I find that better than stretching the phone apps like Samsung does which looks unrefined. Of course, we all want tablet apps, but Samsung's stretch solution is not that. The Pixel Fold is far from perfect and is very expensive. You can nitpick easily but the sum of its parts far exceeds the Fold 4 for me due to the Pixel software (dictation, recorder, etc) and that front display which I found unusable on the Fold 4. If the Fold 5 had the same aspect ratio as the Pixel then the Galaxy would be a no-brainer, but that front display is a massive deal-breaker and I suspect that Samsung holding onto this design has cost them many sales. Thanks!
@@marksouthwell4490 I have not heard that rumor but it would certainly be welcome for me. I have no idea why people want an under display fingerprint reader as it offers no added value over the old school sensors. It's just different so people get excited.
Ill stick to my fold 4. The form factor is nice (although honor put out something really nice recently) but samsungs software for multitasking is just miles ahead right now
I don't agree. You can do 2 apps at a time on the pixel fold as well as use picture in picture with the video streaming apps while having 2 separate apps open. The Samsung fold gives you one extra app...that's it. They both have task bars etc. So is Samsung better....yes but not by miles as your saying. They are very comparable. Also anything they are missing can easily be updated in software. You can't really fix hardware unless it's a complete new design. To be honest the s pen is the real only advantage that Samsung has and to be honest most people don't even use the spen as much as they say they do. I only used it to show off to people when demo the phone. Otherwise I was never really used. Just my 2 cents
All the reviewers received a fancy box. That's not even the retail box... even though I paid $1799+..! 😢 Fingerprint face recognition, password and even the option to do the lines for security.
The thing about the front screen is the resolution that they put it at is very very close to what phones used to be up until 4 or 5 years ago when everybody went tall and narrow and went from 16x 9 to 21 or 22 or 23x9
1:34 have you checked out the LaterCase? I got your back lew! No but seriously, I keep seeing a lot of reviewers bring up Pitaka and say they’re the lightest thinnest cases and they’re carbon fiber and all that… but LaterCase makes the same stuff. Would be interesting to see what the difference between them are 🤔
Did the same thing but went back to Iphone after 4 days...why? Android cant handle DJ app like Djay Pro Ai. Way too buggy on Android but this app run perfectly on IOS.
So I have the Pixel Fold, mine didn't come in that trick box yours came in. Must be the reviewers packaging. My PF is also an Aramid case, but I have a D Brand leather skin for the back of the device. I think it's a very good device overall. Turn off the 5G and as long as you have decent LTE you get all day battery life. Cheers
Pixel phones take darker pictures than necessary. Maybe it is because the HDR is over the mark. I don't like it during the entire winter weather since the weather is gloomy every day
It should be a matter of time to have instagram adapted to that aspect radio. I have a surface duo 2 and instagram is already adapted to the open aspect ratio. It works very well, it is almost the same aspect ratio as a pixel fold (a little bit more wide)
Cases look great but its not providing drop protection. Just mostly scratch it would seem. I wish those pitaka cases maybe had a soft interior or something just a bit more. But look amazing
Camera is actually the same one in the 7a. I love Pixel phones, but if im paying $2k it better have the best everything. Same with Samsung, why ive yet to try a foldable.
I picked one up and loved it, but I couldn’t justify the price and decided to return it. I was coming from an iPhone and had a few annoyances, with the rest of my family being on iPhones. I missed out on a few things that played into my decision to return it like Not being able to approve requests from my daughter for more time on apps or to download things and not having find my as an option are the two biggest. iMessage or FaceTime we’re not a problem as I was thinking they may be, it was the family connection within Apples ecosystem that I couldn’t get past. If this phone was $1,100 I probably would have kept it and worked around the Apple stuff.
One look at the Jerryrigeverything teardown of this phone should scare users away from purchasing it. I will wait for something that will hold up over time. The weak plastic was shocking.
My experience with the fold was rocky the first few days.... Mostly battery life.... But after a week..... Surprisingly the battery life was better I can get through a full day of work without charging... Also only issue is the inner screen bezel... Small grain of dirt got in the way.... The bezel has a lot of minor damage... Other than that it is an amazing device... Traded my 7pro for it.... No regerts so far.....
He snapped the OP11 in half but I would argue that is one of the best phones in its price sector. As long as you are not stupid, ergo avoid putting extreme pressure bending the wrong way, that will not be an issue.
Sounds like you didn't watch the video, just heard someone else say this and now repeat it. He broke the screen and outer parts of the phone, while the hinge was perfect and didn't get damaged in the slightest.
@@andyH_England i know like all people do that these are extreme tests but I like to know that when I buy something it will last under every circumstance..so yeah good device and all but not up to my standards
@@wyterabitt2149 oh u got me there mate I didn't see the video LOL....I like how the fanboys always stick to the same lines and the same arguments..So apart from the hinge like u said and like Jerry said in the video....Remind me what happened to the ACTUAL phone itself? Did it by any chance shutter in pieces? So yeah durable hinge but the rest of the phone is like peanut butter durable..Everything settled lads your hinge will be fine but the rest of the phone, the thing u actually pay and use will be utterly destroyed! Not even 1st generation Samsung Folds had this kind of shoddy build and Google comes after 4 years of foldables and this is the result?
Interesting statement but people like me who's been using a folding phone since 2020 see people still using the old flat phones as missing the point, you don't need other devices at all, that makes folding phone not really that expensive
Is it because you are one of the less than 1% of people that it has any impact on at all? Or because of those magic numbers that you can show off to people, and make yourself feel better?
I traded my fold 4 for the pixel fold. And so far I'm loving it. Some of the features it gives me makes it feel like it's got more to offer than fold 4 did. Like the now playing feature and even double tap back of phone for flashlight (in my case. Or other apps) I love the features on this phone and it's WAAAAY more valuable to me than fold 4 was.
Great review but have to say I have the 7pro but hate the in screen finger unlock I have so many issues with opening the screen and can’t count how many times I have had issues with it 🤔😎
What are you getting? After the initial learning phase and now on Android 14, I am getting 7-8 hours of SOT using the front 66% of the time, on wifi, 120Hz, and 33% brightness
Your Pixel Fold seems like my Pixel 6a...writ very large. I like it. If Graphene have made a version of their de-Googled OS for the Fold, then this looks even more tempting.
@@roostersideburns3440 De-Googled in this case means putting in a custom boot ROM called Graphene (or Calyx, or...). All of these DO NOT require a person to log into the Google Play Store or use GAPPS which is the whole Google "experience." There's no "Google Advertising ID" that locks onto my web browsers with their advertising analysis and tracking. I don't use Google apps apart from their superb Google Camera app. It is in a "sandboxed" area that shuts Google out from monitoring EVERYTHING I do with the lovely camera on this phone. Mind you, the standard Graphene camera app isn't too bad, either. Anyway...I just keep Google out of my business and am free from the constant surveillance capitalism Google enjoys inflicting on Android users.
You should look at it as the Pixel 7a getting a great primary camera rather than the Pixel Fold getting a bad one. Especially as Google is about AI and ML more than spec-chasing bragging rights like 200mp cameras.
There's no way I'd pay so much for a pixel phone ! Pixels have never been the best all round quality devices . Don't get me wrong I like pixels. Visually it looks nicer than the pixel 7 or renders of the pixel 8 and I like the idea of the side e fingerprint reader.
Amazing bit of technology. Do I want one? Nope. I want a smaller phone not a bigger one! Smaller phone with amazing battery is the dream for me but looks like Apple have given up on that now. Gutted.
@@dcmatic9577 The point I was getting at is that the battery is basically fixed tech. Until one of the more exotic battery technologies becomes commercially viable, it's all Li-ion and more battery life means bigger heavier battery. The thinner and smaller the device, the less battery you can stuff in it. The more powerful it is, the faster you burn through what battery is there. There's no black magic any manufacturer can pull here.
@@chrisdpratt Nobody mentioned thinner only. They said smaller, and the vast majority mean smaller screen when they say this - which is why people will specifically also use thinner when they mean thinner talking about phones.
I had a few generations of Google Pixels which I got frustrated with the OS. I continually felt as though I was involved in a beta project. It was getting the Pixelbook that put the nails in the coffin for me as it was absolutely awful. I sold my Google Pixel and Pixelbook and, despite being android for so many years, I got iPhone for the 1st time and I find it much more stable and I’ve been satisfied. Later getting a MacBook, I feel the ecosystem is unparalleled and I’m quite satisfied. Google’s support also was awful. So currently, I’ve brought my consumer purchasing elsewhere and don’t see myself getting an other Google item any time soon
Unfortunately the cameras, especially the selfie camera and the video quality is unacceptable compared to iPhone 14 Pro. So I will be returning it. Also without a case it's too slippery. Finally the battery recharge speeds are way too slow
These reviews are shit…they dont talk about the software and functions ..i changed to android after few days regretted it,calender app is crap, notifocations are crap,no emergency caller bypass, samsung/google dont support barclays card,no personal vibration setting without goodlock, alarms terrible ,calender alert terrible ,mail terrible …battery life okish..Facial recognition woeful.
Happy with 2nd place!! :). Great review as always. But my eyes were glued to the Garmin you are wearing. Can’t to wait see your views about it comparing it to Apple Watch (Or may be stand alone review). I asked this to you on Twitter sometime ago on your “Ask me anything Wednesday” tweet. Keep them coming, Mark :):) We love your videos.
The best Google Fold review I’ve seen! Thank you! I can’t wait to get mine this week! Having used so many devices I hope the pixel fold will meet all my needs (which I think it will). The Z fold 4 came close, but, much like you stated the outer display drove me crazy. :)
Hello, I'm stuck between ipad air 5 / ipad 10th generation (logitech keyboard + apple pencil 1) or macbook air m1, both of which correspond to 25k. The results have not been announced yet, but the departments I want are law or psychology. I have collected a solid safe at home, I don't have a laptop or iPad other than that, and I can't take the safe and work with it. Which one do you think I should buy, everyone says ipad is more comfortable, they say there is no cost of copying in terms of presentation and working (as far as I have read from videos and forums) and this photocopying thing confuses me about macbook. Also, I am too involved with computers since I was 5 years old and I can write too fast, but I have no idea if I have difficulty in handwriting with mechanical writing. In fact, both are absolutely necessary, but we do not have that much, although we do not have them, but I will try to take them into account because it is important. Anyway, it's been too long, I'd be glad if you reply. 🫡
