iPhone X User Experience is a NIGHTMARE!

It has been two weeks since the release of Apple's iPhone X. It's a good phone-nay, a great phone-but it comes with some seriously annoying UX changes that take away the polish of iOS 11. Snazzy Labs' Quinn Nelson talks about some of his gripes with iPhone X that distract from the user experience: the notch, gestures, icons, the whole shebang.

iPhone X is the best phone that Apple has ever made-full stop. It’s great; however, that doesn’t make it perfect. I talk about what I feel (my OPINION) needs improvement. This isn’t a “review,” FWIW.

no it's simply not. I simply hate it when I have to lift up my phone to get to it, as well others with their fingerprint on the back. I want my touch ID! simple efficient and in front, where I need it. Because most of the time I am sitting in an office not walking around ...

iPhone X developer experience is also a fucking nightmare. The screen resolution is completely ridiculous. 2436x1125 isn't just a totally unique resolution that has never been used before, but it's a combination of an even number with few useful factors, and an odd number that means the screen can't even be split evenly. Not to mention the fact that the phone still technically renders the notch, which is a pointless waste of processing power. The worst part being that you have to constantly worry about what the notch and round bezels are covering, and not accidentally have buttons or important information stuck behind it. Apple was already unbelievably obnoxious to developers, but somehow they decided to take it 10 steps further and basically tell all of us to go fuck ourselves.
@CheapBastard1988

TheSpoonKing Maybe you could just do the app design for the iphone 8 and just make it compatible but not care how it actually dispays. Apple customers must be used to the FU attitude from companies so if they complain about how bad the app displays on their iphone 10 just react with: "Should have bought an iphone 8 as the app is compatible but not optimised for the iphone X." I'm kidding though as this would never work unless all or nearly all app developers would do this as there is still a big market for the device.
@XSpamDragonX
@XSpamDragonX 6 лет назад
The other big problem with your idea is that if the app isn't properly compatible with the iPhone X, it's very likely that Apple will just refuse the app during the submission process. Apple checks every app for compatibility when you submit it to the app store, they just don't like saying they look at submitted apps, because then people would realise they let all that garbage fill the app store.
@arnavarya3262

TheSpoonKing That's the shell which apple said you but that's not the truth with optimization of "the notch" and whatever.

"Safe Screen" is now mandatory with Xcode 10 beta (developer btw), when you target ANY ios in your build target even say 9.0, the safe screen is there in your storyboard. There is no way around it. Even navigation controllers will have to fit inside it, even if you are specifically writing an app that doesn't target 10.0 and up, that is in addition it highly (100% probably) that apple won't accept your build submission if you somehow managed around it, say by using an older version of Swift, and if it does now, you can be sure it won't be accepted in the future.

Very picky review. I came across the multitasking on my own by mistake like a few of my friends so has nothing to do with tech level. Agreed Apple could cover this and I bet they do in their how to videos. A company cannot hold everyone’s hand that is why it is good to have people like you point some tips and tricks out. Plus we are still in the first month I am sure they will tweak things just like they did on the watch once people had it in their hands. Mostly love all the UI setup. The home option was done perfectly and would not change that part. Notch people need to get over that a non issue again something they can easy tweak for battery info.

I have a Xiaomi Mi Mix 2, and I use the gesture controls, which are pretty much exactly the same as the X's, and I found them to be really nice. The swipe up for your app switcher is faster on the Mi Mix than the X and the landscape home gesture reacts the same way, but you can turn it to single swipe in the settings. I've actually found that I prefer the double swipe because I have on several occasions closed apps accidentally and is it really any different from any other phone in landscape? You still have to swipe once to show the home button on nearly any non gesture, non physical home button based smartphone, even including my Mi Mix when it isn't using gestures. Even though the Mi Mix has about 1% less screen to body ratio than the X it looks better because it doesn't have a notch, and the bezels are much smaller on the sides and top, with only the bottom being thick, because it has the front facing camera. Even with the bottom bezel being so much thicker it still looks beautiful.

After watching this video it seems to me that you need to try the Galaxy S8. Your mind will be blown. This is coming from a long term Apple fan boy here! I switched from Apple to Samsung a few months ago when I saw what the iPhone X was all about... which wasn't much. It was dissapointing to say the least so I switched platforms. I found out about a month in that Samsung hid a button behind the screen. Similar to Apple's 3D Touch, only it's a home button at the bottom. Not to mention you get a beautiful status bar that spans across the top. Just give it a try. I know you'll miss iMessage and such, but it's a much better user experience. Jobs must be rolling in his grave. :P

David Coleman "skeuomorphic" wasn't just a design choice they liked and decided to go with. It was part of some brilliant ass design to show and familiarize people with these new type of phones and way of input. I'm not disagreeing that eventually it was the right move to change things up. But the execution and design slop of iOS 7 and beyond is just shit design and could easier done better. And WAS done better in terms of a UX

Speaker Sex Then it was one of the things I like best about android; the S8 is cream of the crop in terms of this design, I love the look of Yosemite and up, and Windows 8 and 10 definitely shit on Windows 7 in the UI department because they don't have this cringeworthy cartoony look about them. Our differing opinion is no reason to call me retarded.

I never once agreed that iOS wasn't behind the curve on Android; hence is the reason why I jailbroke my iPhone. That being said, an iPhone with Root Access and App Hooking (I know Xposed does this as well, but since Android is a java based pile, Xposed has to go through 4 layers to actually do anything versus the 2 layers that Cydia Substrate has to) is better than android in my opinion and definitely looks better in my opinion. Idk where you got the whole "feature" argument, my argument was exclusively on a aesthetic level. Hence is why I said the ONLY good software decision Ive's made was taking iOS and macOS and removing the candy pop tripe and making the OS's look professional.

i have an iphone Xs and none of these features bother me. I’ve had the phone since september and it’s almost second nature to swipe the top right corner down for the control center. I do have a couple issues however, i wish that for the notification center you only could swipe down from the left notch sometimes i want the control center and if i accidentally do it too quickly i swipe down too far towards the middle and open the notification center. The other thing is that when i’m on my lock screen and try to use the 3d touch for the flashlight I couldn’t do it for the longest time i only figured it out till recently.. i would also try to do it and i would click it and try 3d touch but for some reason it would not work for me. i also don’t have a screen protector or anything that would get in the way so i don’t know what was the problem.

Just got my iphone 11 pro, my first home button less iphone, and for me it felt intuitive from the beginning, it seems to do exactly what you want it to do, I have never been trying to do one gesture and have it not work or do something else then what I meant it to do. I am guessing apple has fine tuned they’re gesture mechanics, since this video came out, but I just thought I would clear it up. It makes so much sense it is fast intuitive and I absolutely love it.

Not to mention, without the trusty Home button , how would you go Home if the app has frozen and no gestures are responding?
@theLuigiFan0007Productions
@theLuigiFan0007Productions 6 лет назад
The home button probably would still respond. Hardware interrupts usually have a higher priority then software input like touch gestures. Unless the OS scans touch input for certain motions before input reaches the app. I know Android is irrelevant to this kind of thing, but pressing the power/lock or hardware home button will usually have an effect even if a app has completely frozen and software buttons aren't responding. I can usually press power and tap reboot even if nothing else works. It's the same general idea with pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL on a PC. But I don't think the home button needs to be on the front, they could have put it by the power button, or in a place a finger can easily reach. At least that's my design sense, rather then completely remove it, relocate it.

It’s bizarre too because some of the time it beats me to even swiping up and I don’t notice it at all, but other times it feels like I’m waiting for that little lock animation for an eternity. Very frustrating. I do think that a flawless and fast Face ID would be a more than worthy replacement, but it’s just not there for me right now.

Also, I've wanted a bezel-less screen for a while, and the stupid notch ruins it. I also like touch ID. Any smart design/innovation died with steve jobs. EDIT: I just got the galaxy S8 and I love it

I'm usually the first person my friends / family call when they need tech help, and even I was baffled when I came across the "double click to install" screen on my friend's iPhone X. Him and I sat there like idiots for at least a few minutes trying almost every "double click" gesture on the screen we could think of. Would it really have been that hard for Apple to change the text to say "double click lock button to install"?

Rich Abe it’s necessary in case an app requires payment. So faceid doesn’t trigger and pay without your consent just by you looking at the phone, you’re asked to double click the button to authenticate the purchase and start the faceid scan, otherwise there would be a lot of accidental purchases

@00SNIVY00
@00SNIVY00 3 года назад
5:20 didn't realize the bar right next to the power button and the direction saying *click* and not "tap" meant to click the power button. Because you click things on a touch screen. It's a bar outlining where the power button goes, not a space to tap the screen. Face ID works when you're looking at the screen, so it has you press the side button twice in order to prevent accidental purchases, it's an even better implementation than Touch ID since it requires physically pressing the button twice instead of instances where you could accidentally purchase something by having your thumb resting on the home button.

After the latest update of my iPhone 6plus the Photos app on my Mac does not recognise the photos on my phone. Some new format, it says. Not cool to ditch the older devices and practically force ppl to buy new models. There are workarounds, I had to get apps for transfer, so now it is a three step operation to take my photos off of my phone and into Mac. But so unnecessary! Dzongi was it that big of a issue that Apple just had to do that? Now for that I’m forced to open the damn settings app every time because of some stupid thing I don’t need, if I wanted to disconnect I would go to the settings. These are “QUICK TOGGLES” and that’s not doing what it used to do. Why not give us a option to have a way to have it turn of instead of disconnecting if we don’t want it? Or further force touch those specific toggles to turn off but wait this is Apple they don’t think of the other group of people and this is why jailbreaking is amazing, fixing things Apple doesn’t want to and have new features Apple then steals... I’m sorry gets “inspired” and calls it their own. Also I’ve tried so hard not to curse out because stupid simple things getting more inconvenient annoys me

@jeffjoraj
@jeffjoraj 6 лет назад
I wrote a comment about it but it must've gotten lost in the sea so here it is again: As annoying as it is, I think the home button double click is crucial for FaceID purchases. Because the iPhone is waterproof, it's expected to be used in areas with high risk of being splashed on. Water on a capacitive touch screen can cause the screen to go haywire. Remember this. Say you drop your phone in the sink while the screen is on. The running water opens the App Store, an app page, and gets to the "Buy" icon. You panic and pick the phone up. It sees your face. The wet phone taps the theoretical "Install" button, and now you're out $6.99 for an app you never wanted.
@itsasadbunny
@itsasadbunny 6 лет назад
If an IPhone can do that just by dropping it in a sink thats poor design. Why, well imagine your recording underwater well then would it start pushing random buttons on screen, no. So no it wont randomly install an app, and if in any super rare instance it does, doesn't ios have a return option like android?
@singingirand7925
@singingirand7925 6 лет назад
I kinda thought of pressing the power button immediately just because of that white indicator on the side. If they wanted you to press there, why would the indicator thats the same length of the button be on the side bouncing right and left?
@jeffjoraj
@jeffjoraj 6 лет назад
Any touch screen will do this in water. It doesn't matter who makes it lol. Go ahead, try splashing a little bit of water on the screen and try to use it. I'll wait.
@mitakast1
@mitakast1 6 лет назад
Pretty much the only thing I agree with is that the status bar isn't big enough, and it really bugs me I can't see the percentage of my battery. And the hardware button press for purchasing is so that you can CONFIRM you want to buy/install the app or whatever. Why? Because with a TouchID, you have to physically put your finger on it and authenticate this way. With FaceID, all you have to do is look at the screen. If you clicked "buy" by mistake, and are currently looking at the screen, you'll have bought something you may not want.

The double tap to pay is very intentional. It’s meant to subtly train you to know that a double tap on the sleep/wake button is directly related to payments, either authorization or Apple Pay.

I'm sure the fangirls willing to pay are thrilled to be the ones to beta test it. I do understand though, as it takes years for a new version of grand theft auto to come to market you start thinking: "Wow it'd be awesome to be able to alpha or beta test it with all the latest features and graphics and you don't have to wait." But it wouldn't be that great. It's much more likely to be a major frustrating disappointment with frequent crashes, artifacting, sound bugs, badly implemented/unfinished control layouts and falling through non solid pieces of the floor. But if you don't think ahead like this you'd likely fall for the iPhone X' pretty face and clever marketing.

Hector Rodriguez less features makes it shit, and bluetooth still isn't on point, i use my headphones on all devices i can, because my phone, my pc, and everything else basically still has a 3.5mm jack, issues with bluetooth: worse quality, you suddenly have more devices to charge and keep charged, i can have my headphones plugged in while charging my phone cause dongles are retarded, and more shit. why remove perfectly usable, and in the case of face recognition vs fingerprint scanning fingerprint is still more reliable and secure. buttons are also great to have, since you don't have to rely on a fuckton of retarded gestures and so forth.

Why use a headphone jack when you can have wireless? Apple is preparing for the future generations so wires will eventually become extinct. Why use your finger to control your security and features of you phone when you could use your face, or maybe in the future for Apple or other companies, a more totally different way for security. Obviously prices will go down for wireless technology and advance over time, getting rid of the headphone jack on the most used devices forces companies to start developing better technology. Have you seen the prototype for COMPLETELY wireless charging without putting your phone on the pad, just walk in to the room, bam, your phone is charging. Soon we won’t even need a charging port either. However, at this time, it costs a lot of money for wireless Bluetooth headphones which have equivalent sound to wired ones, but then again, if you can afford a £1000 phone, then you should be able to get wireless technology. It’s like spending £300 on an Xbox One and you then argue about the delivery cost being £10 and end up not buying it. Apple most obviously isn’t for the people without money in their pockets. But they are changing the future in a lot of ways for other companies and people. They make things main stream, like Apple Pay and the Notch for example. Everything is based on your opinion on what you want, but I believe that we should be focusing on the generations ahead of us, and if you don’t want to support that kind of view, but an iPhone 6s Plus and under or another phone.

Anyone notice there was a red dot flashing on his front facing camera?

+Bankai3474 That’s the True Depth camera system for Face ID and Attention Assist.

Its not visible to the human eye, however some cameras pick up the wavelength coming from the sensor and change it to something we can see

Audiophile not interested in a dongle. No headphone jack no deal, will be switching to android in the future.

You're going to have a hard time in the future when every other flagship follows suit.

+NathaN If* ever other flagship follows suit. Let's wait before making such assumptions, not every company profits from bluetooth device sales.

Yeah I know. But honestly, it was out of genuine curiosity for the content and I appreciated your video. Doesn´t mean I like the thumbnail though :)

The reachability is not that dificult you just have to do a down gesture from the bottom part, you just have to do ir quick, does not need to be dragged from too down

Fair assessments. I’ve felt that Apple has slipped in UX design. I don’t have much faith in gesture based UI. They aren’t universal enough.
@lerneninverschiedenenforme7513
Mulitasking gets even crappier on iPads. It's never clear for me or the OS whats happening, when I swipe up. Open multitasking? Close app? it's like christmas all the time. And why the heck do we have app tiles now -_-

control center should swipe from the middle of the phone like the search bar can.. Just switch those two gestures.
