2 days ago, on the 5th of February 2023 it was exactly 30 years ago that Geoff Mann died. He was the awesome frontman of that awesome band Twelfth Night. Twelfth Night and IQ were bands that had a lot in common and Peter Nichols was a very close friend of Geoff’s. A few days before Geoff Mann died IQ performed in Tilburg at the Noorderligt, presently O13. Everyone in the audience that night knew that Geoff Mann was fighting for his life that very moment. So, when Peter announced that they would dedicate the middle part of the Last Human Gateway to Geoff, it was so profound. I remember singing along, at the top of my voice, with tears in my eyes. Never has a version of this song been this moving as that night in late January ‘93. Such a profound band this is. IQ forever….
I stumbled upon this excellent group thinking the vocalist was Peter Gabriel when I heard them for the first time. What a wonderful stumble on my part. The members that make up IQ are all of the most excellent caliber in their abilities in performing their own musicianship. A++ !!!
My brother and I were in the local shop when we heard them start the first album, just after they'd gotten it. He went to the desk and asked what Genesis album it was.
I used to see them at the Marquee. I fancied their then cute blond guitarist 😀The singer used to wear make-up a la Peter Gabriel. Remember chatting to him.
Awesome, my favourite IQ track of all time, when I heard it on the CD first time I was hooked, when I saw them perform it live, well, nothing short of amazing, I was just scrolling through tonight and picked this up, great memories of distant times, if you get the chance to watch these guys live grab it with both hands, you really won't be disappointed.
This suite is a masterpiece... and it is amazing that they are still able to play it live so well... some people use to compare iq with Marillion and other neo-prog band from the 80s but imho they’re the only band which actually succeded in being recognisable... of course they own a lot to Genesis but who doesn’t after all?
I actually disagree, Martin’s keyboard parts sound nothing like tony banks ‘s. But it’s true that some instrumental passages sound like genesis. I noticed mike Holmes’ s guitar tones in the early days (1982-1985. Especially on « the Wake ») sounded like Steve hackett ‘s tones on « wind and wuthering”... Anyway, this is my opinion...
Concordo!
Those OLD days are still here. There are good bands recording awesome music every day (despite the horrific pop stuff out there). Check for example Franck Carducci's work, you will find it worth your time.
@@saraivab I can absolutely agree! Gazpacho, Midas Fall, Riverside, Lazuli are fantastic bands, all founded in this century. Or in another genre Delain, Serenity, Xandria and Stream of Passion
@@tomschmidt4355 Greetings Tom. I've been recently putting up a small RU-vid playlist with the purpose of proving that point! Riverside was already in there. I really like Lazuli and will choose a track or two to add. ru-vid.com/group/PLQdxMb-fjANrRRy5xf5prBFgXMD2uYYDc
Too many manufactured bands, not enough homemade 'practices in the garage' sets, my brother on drums, I know a guy who plays the piano (keyboard) and I'm learning to play guitar, let's form a band.
Across the plateau no clouds storm the sky, Above the riverbed the world's run dry, I beat the air, for those who hear, And through the night my call goes out unheard, I cry for company and get no word, The silent groan, God only knows, I stand alone. The wind devides the empty shells below, Deep in the valley night begins to grow, The memory, the best of me, From out the shadows something takes my hand, To lead me homeward through a foreign land, The silence grown, the palest eyes, I'm the only one. A mother's son, a father's pride, How can I run and where to hide? I close my eyes and hope tonight, My healing flesh will be all right; A baby cries, another ghost, A different side to claim the most, My blood gone black and down to dust, So save my soul or let me die, I'm still alive. I'm on the other side, Shaken down, lovely but cockeyed, No wonder I feel nervous, Lord, they don't deserve us anyway. I want to burn these wings, You can see how it's happening, Still they're telling me to smack the enemy, It's killing time! I should have known before, Only bad's half as good as dead, I can't go any faster, stuck like alabaster, White as I know. We stand in lines of old, staying cold, Swallow all the anger, Releases get away, coming down, Across the fields of amber, To the water, ocean far below. As the mirror to the sun, The colour of the evening, never let go, Hold my stomach, keep it tight, They're pulling out the breathing, let it go; If you ever change your mind, Don't be caught alone, no, it's only me, With all the hopes and fears combined, It's hard to care for living anymore, I wouldn't let you down again. Inspired by hunger, fired by lust, I sold the children's faces, painted gold, Something moving taking hold, Is gathering but never growing old, I did everything I could just to say, Believe me, you're not alone, But with the winter in my bones, Oh what else can I do now? It's only me, I wouldn't let you down again. Break back to back lately, Oh and how they moved when I was Younger than this, Get my spirit caught beneath the surface, SDee me play dead today, I love my daydreams, leave my doldrums, Armies of priests All come to practice their party pieces, Pounding like metal from side to side, To shoot, to save, And risk that horizon, No smoke can shield, it stays unhealed, Safe in our stillness, At last we see him rise from out the earth. I set the silhouette that leaves me scarred, Lost my condition from the perfect star, I caught the fire, can't help but see, There's none to carry on. I knew these plains before the world was mine, With no escape in mind, I'll be resigned, Inside alone, I know for sure, The future's all gone
We see rise from out the earth. Still wonder how much cheisthood is an inspiration for this song, the lyrics and the poses taken, crucifixion style with arms outstretched, especially in the closing.
The only neo-prog band continuing at the level of early Genesis...these are the almost the originals, paying all respect to the great Mike Holmes, I miss Orford's genius, their main creator... new keyboardist is good, but I see here a lot of arpeggios programmed, not played. Don't know if Martin used that tricky technique, think he didn't need It live...
I am sitting very comfortably now..I have been since I found my ears are a temple upon themselves that serve us all so well that engage our senses with such sonic grace..
I spent YEARS looking for this particular piece, my brother played it often, I had NO IDEA what the album was. I remembered 1 particular line I SOLD THE CHILDREN'S FACES PAINTED GOLD, which when I googled brought me back. (To my total surprise, the internet was new and the top searches were "sex" and "how to build a bomb" )
He sounds a bit like Peter Frampton, which is interesting for prog-styled work. I do believe that this singer has been known to wear costumes for some performances. Critics are so quick to claim that it is pretentious, I guess a lot of singers got tired of that, except for Alice Cooper.
Not bad, but they sound like having mellowed with age. I prefer their performance of this in London 2001, they still had more verve back then, and Peter Nicholls more theatralic gestures. BTW it can be found on youtube, if you look for it, which is really what I recommend, it was awsome.
Suite capolavoro.Peccato non l'abbiano mai suonata in Italia,o sbaglio ? (li seguo dal 2010).Masterpiece suite.What a pity they never played it in Italy,or i'm wrong ? ( i follow them since 2010)
