Well, this is weird. What are all these squiggles? Those peaks represent the wavelengths of infrared light that don't get to the detector, because there's some functional group in the sample absorbing them. Professor Dave busts out some dance moves in this one. Do the symmetric stretch!

In my intention he deserves ALL the Sub´s...and stupid Prank Channels go crazy with subs...poor humanity. Very good information. Depending on where you are Scientists may use the opposite. Here we invert it, instead of dips we use peaks. Otherwise it's the same

It's 12:36am and I have my chem final at 9 tomorrow morning and I'd been flipping through my textbook and noticed IR spectroscopy, which I've never seen before, but which definitely will be on the final...so I'd just like to take this time to thank you for saving me about an hour of trying to understand this just from a textbook. Thanks for saving me time and energy!

finally , a concise explanation on why graphs show transmission and a reference to the detector - looking for this has been killing me , and yet a 10 minute video explained better than i could find after 20 minutes searching, thanks Professor Dave - you're a real lifesaver !

Just like your other videos, this video is perfect for those who need a deeper explanation on infrared spectroscopy. To be honest I struggle with identifying stretches in an IR spectrum and this video explains that and more. Thank you.

Really well explained. From very basics and in depth. Got me to study IRs of some simple molecules as phenol and acetone and benzoic acid. Thank you. IR is a really very interesting concept

A carbonyl group is C double bonded to O right? The functional group you identified on the right of the whiteboard is an sp2 C-H, which has a significantly different frequency (3050-3150) than carbonyl (1620-1680), which your drew in the spectra. I'm a little confused why you drew the carbonyl frequency in the spectra but identified it's functional group as a sp2 C-H instead?
