It's a matter of how one acclimatizes to what one has learned to define music and singing. Iris Dement has an almost unique style of singing and that fact results in her lying outside the typical set of expectations.
TALKIN ABOUT HITTING IT OUTA THE PARK! Tell me there are not thousands relating to this ! The words, the pacing, and the pathos is next dimension! Love her voice and her exquisite songwriting!!!!!
She'd got such a beautiful voice, every song ive heard her sing either makes me want to cry because it fills me with emotion or gives me goosebumps! ❤❤❤
The first song I heard Iris sing on NPR was Our Town. It was in the nineties when my town Jewtown Chicago was being torn down for redevelopment. I cried. It hit me hard.
Iris got my undivided attention when I heard " Wasteland". Anyone who has the balls to say it like it is deserves every accolade coming to them. In this modern world of ME to see an artist point out, not just the faults of the US but world wide it's been a long time coming. So Iris thanks from all people with a semblance of care for our fellow man..❤️🔥🇮🇪
If you're ever in the mood to ponder the meaning(s) of life, make a pot of coffee and listen to a random mix of Iris DeMent. A lovely musical voice that enunciates every word born of the human spirit with a main street America grasp of life.
If Iris doesn't touch your heart....very very deeply....then you haven't got one. I luv this woman. Now...Then....Forever. thank you Iris ....just for bein' the angel that you are.
I saw Iris at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA about 2001. She was dressed in a housecoat and fuzzy slippers. I felt like i was sitting in her living room. No one has a voice, and a heart, like Iris.
it's amazing how one beautiful voice can express what millions and millions experience on a daily basis- and in doing so- bring relief in the understanding of the human condition better - thank you Iris
Makes me feel we are never alone in our thoughts. Iris justs sings them out loud. In the feelings from our souls. Depression lives in all of us now and then.
I first heard Iris play a mountain women singing an old mountain song "Pretty Saro" in the movie Songcatcher...but I didn't know who she was until someone in the comments of the movie mentioned her name. So I went looking for her. Yes, she has that mournful mountain sound. For the movie, she really stressed strongly that style of singing. Thank you Iris. I like Emmylou Harris, too. She sang "Barbara Allen" while the credits ran at movie's end.
Beside myself... I've introduced this voice I've recently discovered to other members of my family and friends and they laughed or likened the experience to nails on a chalk board. To me she sounds like an angel and evokes emotions I think are common in most all of us. I'm pretty sure I'll just disown the family and disavow the friends........
brian mcmillan-I fell down a rabbit hole following John Prine and bumped into Iris DeMent. After listening to her and John I decided to check out her stuff. The first song found me in the same category as your soon-to-be disowned family & friends. Then her videos kept popping up in my feed...and I gave her another try. Now here I am listening to this lovely lament for the third time. I think I’ve become a fan.
Attended one of her concerts in a local venue. Great time! Iris is a much better singer than some give her credit. Yes, she has that country nasal sound, but listen closely and you will hear an excellent singing voice. I've been a fan for a decade or more now.
Don't be too hard on the people who don't like Iris. I love Iris. She touches my soul. But I too have my guilty displeasures. Like Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline etc. Etc. . For some reason I don't connect with their music. It's definitely me not them. C"est La Vie.
Just thinking about our relationship with our musical influences and how we can grow and develop as we get older. I love Iris Dement, as I love the songs of John Prine. Maybe it's that at the end of the day beauty is in the eye of the beholder ❤️
WOW Very soulful, well written and WHAT A VOICE! VERY touching! Please DONT stop putting out these GREAT songs! This is just FANTASTIC! I'm in AWE You are a Treasure!!
I can't explain what she does to a song, unique, would be a understatement, " I had a garden, ,but the flowers died,, easy is gett'in harder,,,,,,, everyday" dam I like that....and for a lot of people, she's got it right,,, harder going, an dead flowers galore.
i was comin on in kentucxky as a singer songwriter i saw her with john prine shes a great girl but a hellon wild but sweet iris is tough i worte with laura nyro before she passed they were like twins
