Iris DeMent...what can you say? Absolutely fantastic...brings so much joy...and all 4 albums are brilliant. The world is a better, happier place because of her. Her beautiful honesty, sincerity shines through... Iris DeMent what can I say? Thanx...
This song did something for me in a deep spiritual way, the line you mention made me cry but they were tears of understanding, i don't know it's really hard to explain!
Has there ever been a better concept for collaboration than Transatlantic Sessions? Wouldn't every artist dream of being a part of such a wonderous thing? I think everyone here knew that Iris was creating a special magic, and Iris knew that she was free to do so with these empathetic musicians.
What is it about a well timed key change that always drives home a song like this? Iris is simply a treasure. Like all my favorite artists, she wears every lyric in her expressions.
She has such an unusual distinctive voice but it is very effective. Its a very country voice but lends itself beautifully to folk music....love it love it ..... raises me up to the next level
such a pure voice that cuts to the deepest parts, I could listen all day and go to a place where memories of the past and the people I loved are there.
I watched Iris Dement at the Southgate House in Newport, Kentucky from about 15 ft. away. She blew me away; I doubt if I went for a drink or to go to the bathroom. I hope , next time, she brings her talented hubby, Greg Brown.
Starfighter, You and Iris have at least one thing in common; You both have a way of bringing to mind the good and essential things of life; stripped of the hustle and bustle that weighs us down. It makes us long for the simple life, which probably ain't going to happen but does give us a few moments of reverie. .
At rare times special people have creations of nearly perfect beauty. This is one of those times. This song comes together like a complex puzzle balanced from side to side and top to bottom. It speaks to the heart directly. I love it.
It _is_ magical. Not may people can write such a perfect song, but Iris also has, "Our Town", "Let the Mystery Be" and "Easy's Gettin' Harder Every Day, each one a magical gem.
First time seeing this video and what a performance by Iris that was a beautiful song by a beautiful lady. Speaking of beauty, the lady on the double bass is the most beautiful person that I have seen in quite a long time. Hello Molly your appearance in this video has made my day. Thanks for posting.
What a wonderful artist! She was one of my dad's favorites , we just said our last "good-byes" to him earlier this year, so I find myself listening to his favorite music a lot and what a treat it has been for me.
You are so right! Her voice is as pure as a brook flowing after a springtime rain shower. That hum and yodel at the very end damn near brought me to tears. This song is so moving and rips out your very heart.. Damn Her!
She sings and it takes me back to Tennessee to my wife’s grandma who would break out singing with her beautiful voice...raised in the hills and going to church.
These are the cream of the crop as far as musicians go in this genre love the way they dovetail Iris D...they put a lot into this incredible piece....she in a league of her own...much appreciated here in Ireland...
Loves the little shindigs like these. My mother is gone to wexford tonight with my sister for an ould knees up, few guitars, accordion, fiddle etc, the good proper nights in a little country pub.
Thank you for posting this most beautiful song that I've ever heard. I sent it to my son with the suggestion he listen to the words carefully and take it to heart. He said he didn't quite understand. I told him that maybe only us old folks could understand but the only counsel I could give him is that he already started writing the melody that would be there in his place....my grandsons.
Hands down, this is the best song ever about the art of songwriting. It belongs in a textbook. Brilliant! I saw Iris perform last night but unfortunately she didn't have time to include this. Her voice has not lost an ounce of its charm and emotion.
Exactly. If you don't appreciate this then you need to stab out your eardrums. This is the most wonderful song, especially if you've ever tried to write a song.
What a find! I don't really like country music, or folk for that matter. But a great artist chages everything, so I keep an open mind. She is captivating. (Are there videos or her available on DVD?)
This is pure class - Iris Dement at her best, great backing from Donal Lunny, Phil Cunningham, Russ Barenberg, Jay Ungar and Molly Mason - Wow, you won't see this again.
I saw her at Merlefest. While she was singing, a mosquito or fly flew into her mouth and interrupted her song. She stopped and excused herself for the interruption and started the tune all over. What a tremendous performer. It might have been this song, but I do not remember.
Some undue implied credit here - I'm a Brit that uploaded this from Engelestan. Thanks to US posters for the previous Iris video that prompted its submission.
You have hit the nail on the head about the BBC they repeat loads of shit but seldom air the good stuff. They are also missing out on an opportunity to sell this on DVD, all you can by is DrWho and Little Britain. Whose BBC is it.
