Iris Van Herpen is one of the most exciting designers in the world, and when she shows her collections during the Haute Couture weeks in Paris, her materiality usually thrills. This season was the brand's 15th anniversary, and the collection titled "Meta Morphism" was both a play on the brand's transformation and the Ancient Roman poet Ovid's famous work "Metamorphosis". Van Herpen's storytelling is brilliant here, as she not only expands upon styles we have seen over the years but also new materials we haven't seen in her collections before.

It’s crazy to me that celebrities aren’t wearing Iris Van Herpen on every single red carpet. Their looks are nothing short of stunning modern art.
@becauseimbored777777
@becauseimbored777777 2 года назад
I have this EXACT thought!!!
@hauz287
@hauz287 2 года назад
On a red carpet the focus is to be kept on the person donning the piece not the piece. EVH pieces are incrediblly loud and need the personality to follow. Lady Gaga can rock this but anyone with less presence can lose to the dress. No one wants that. That's why we don't see such large over the top couture on red carpet that much.
@becauseimbored777777
@becauseimbored777777 2 года назад
@@hauz287 my argument to that is that perhaps as a person is famous their personality and presence should also be as…recognizable? They are the brand in themselves if they are a celebrity and if the brand is bland…that’s seems like the celebrity’s problem 🧐 I also understand that celebrities that are actors should be able to meld their presence to any role and to that I say: you can wear the opening look, genesis. I think it’s not as out there but still artistic and carries the organic strangeness of the brand.
@becauseimbored777777
@becauseimbored777777 2 года назад
@@hauz287 I guess I mean that based on the opening look, IVH clearly understands the assignment of draping like Luke talked about. She would be able to partner with specific celebrities to create a shared vision that may not be as amazingly insect like as the majority of the runway looks but still unique and different and Evolved

The sheer lace actually working with the models' skin colors was masterful. How many times have we seen a designer just not match the color of those fabrics to the model?!... too many.
@aaronlock5091
@aaronlock5091 2 года назад
Omg this! Yes, sometimes pieces are perfect, but they just don't match the model, and it's so frustrating. Iris pays attention to her models and it shows. Everything ties together perfectly - their appearance, the dresses, the colours...

The one thing I find surprising about Iris Van Herpen is the PR strategy, specifically the celebrities they are dressing for Red Carpets. They don't always always live up to her level of the excellence.
@hellothisislilac

I've always wondered what kind of client would buy from her. Like her clothes are out of this world stunning but it takes a certain stature and charisma to wear them so that you're wearing her designs and not the other way round. I've seen quite a few hits on the red carpet but like where would her clients wear her collection?
@THEMODELGENE

@@hellothisislilac The Haute Couture clientele is already very small, and yes, these are more difficult for most women to wear than something from Elie Saab for a gala, but there is something still so compelling about her work. The wearer would need to have a flawless figure to wear these clothes. Compared to other designers each garment takes more time to produce, requires a large number of fittings (which takes a lot of time), and requires a large amount of care while wearing. A lot of celebrities just want outfits they can get hold of quickly, put on quickly, and still looking good.

A few Met Gala attendees wore IVH to the event although I wouldn’t say any of them were A-list celebs. Grimes carried her look well, since her persona and aesthetic make sense in this context. While I appreciate Dove Cameron’s attempt at making a splash at her first Met Gala, she wasn’t able to do that dress justice. This is probably one of the main reasons why most celebs don’t wear Iris on the red carpet.

I adore Van Herpens designs... All of these gowns look like fine art (which they are) without loosing the sense of them being clothing. Like... If I had the money and occasion to be this extra, I would genuinely wear some of these pieces. Additionally, despite the many cutouts and little use of fabric the models never look naked, instead the construction enhances the shape of the body without sexualising it. It's just beautiful craftsmanship, storytelling, and innovation. Also pay attention to how close the sheer fabric matches the models' skintones, I had to do a double take on the first gown to realize that the chest was covered

She is truly an artist not just a fashion designer at this point. These dresses can be looked at as sculptures and the best part is...all the dresses on all the different complexion women complimented their skin and look as if those dresses were an extension of their body. Now that is truly art when you don't even think of them as dresses anymore but something that transcends dresses.

This collection woke up The Fashion in me. Truly such thought provoking design that has a clear well researched and picked apart inspiration. The craftsmanship of the garments, especially the draping, is awe inspiring. As a renaissance and ancient greek history lover, this collection is the best of it all. As a person who does portraiture and figure drawing, anatomy can never be too stressed. Iris Van Herpen's gowns not only played with silhouette but called back to structure. Many designs with "invisible" mesh do not work well but the fabric choice and color was done expertly.

I watched the show without context a couple of days ago, but I have to say your video is basically mandatory watching to properly understanding it. I love the nods to Ovid and his works, and the depth to which you went to explain the materials used as well. Iris and her team continue to stun me with their incredible work. I'm a home dressmaker/costumer, and while I can probably try to replicate most other fashion houses' work and get a wearable garment out of it, it is IMPOSSIBLE to even begin to approach van Herpen's works. It makes me appreciate them all the more because I know how outside the norm of usual haute couture they are.

I'm definitely not a fashion expert and I lack historical knowledge and context for many of these videos. So from my layman's perspective, Iris Van Herpen seems to be the only current designer constantly creating clothing that looks nearly impossible. They sometimes seem like the impossible clothes in fantasy or cyberpunk artwork. Those shapes shouldn't be possible to make with real textiles, but there it is. In addition, the word "metamorphosis" is most often associated with the butterfly. The use of abstract wings, symmetry, and patterning of the appliques reminds me of butterflies (particularly the violet looks) or even rorshach tests come to life. In another book titled "Metamorphosis" by a different Roman author, Lucius Apuleius (2nd century AD), the story of Cupid and Psyche is told. Psyche becomes the goddess of the soul. In her immortal form, she is often portrayed with butterfly wings. The story is likely much older than that, and there is earlier Greek art of a goddess with butterfly wings. I think the fact that the goddess of the soul is portrayed with the wings of a creature whose most distinctive feature is its transformation is kind of amazing and very fitting for Iris Van Herpen. Not exactly Ovid, but I do love the possibilities related to the theme.

I live for the gorgeous creativity in IVH shows. I appreciate her work even more deeply after hearing the contexts on this channel. Thank you!

I've often thought that if I were a celebrity with my pick of designers to work with, I'd be Iris van Herpen allll the way

This was such a wonderful breakdown of the collection! Thank you for the research and presentation! I also thought the black and white Narcissus dress was a cool way to reimagine and explore the mirror and the veil! Merging and making art of both concepts while exploring the idea that the perception of beauty can become a prison, or a cover for the true self.
