Irish Harp Music on Nyckelharpa - Mr Malone by Carolan

'Mr Malone' by Turlough O'Carolan, the famous blind harpist of 1700 Ireland, is one of the first tunes I heard in my life. The natural resonance of the nyckelharpa fits the light melancholy especially well.
And oh the fun of trying to dress and look (a bit) like Carolan !
This video is part of the World Nyckelharpa Day 2022 challenge of playing tunes from other instruments' repertoires on nyckelharpa.

Dear Emelie I have just watched your video. To say I am gobsmacked is an understatement. You are a beautiful player and your instrument amazes me. I am Scottish but this beautiful piece resonates deeply with my intense love of traditional Scottish and Irish folk music. But your country also seems to be connected somehow. This music reminds me of my trip to the west coast of Ireland, when I stopped in Lahinc, in front of a fireplace, enjoying a very good salmon together with a very good beer. I did not know the instrument, but it is sublime and is played divinely. Thanks Emelie, from Cosenza, Southern Italy

Beautiful! Your playing is very precise which brings out a sense of longing in the composition. The instrument has a buzzing sound that reminds me of a fiddle playing in unison with an accordion (bosca ceoil).

interesting instrument. It’s like a double string viola with the subtle tack thump sound from the wooden keys give it a certain fire side feel. Wonderful!

Actually it has simple strings, not double, but then 12 resonance strings under the melodic ones, giving the extra resonating sound. A clever use of mechanical acoustics !

Young lady, as a nyckelharpa's goes you are quite a fine player. I would so enjoy learning to play the nyckelharpa but at age 82 I'm afraid I'm closer to the wood of a casket than a nyckelharpa. I am a player of several instruments mandolin, banjo, violin, Irish bouzouki, tenor guitar, and working on learning the mandocello. enough is enough!

It really depends on your background. Fiddle and cello help a lot, and guitar to some extent aswell. Good luck !

Not far ! It's more like a violin/viola d'amore with a hurdy-gurdy keyboard, kinda. And yes, sympathetic (resonance) strings, 12 of them.

Confused: Four fine tuning knobs at left, looks like four strings where she’s bowing (maybe four pairs?), but twelve string tuners at right - with another four knobs in the centre of the head. Gonna have to look this up…

Plucked strings on the nyckelharpa are hard. There is very little space for the fingers and the tension is high. So I can understand it wasn't the best sounding pizzicato ^^ I did it as a tribute to the Irish harp.

12 pegs, yet 4 fine tuners - interesting - does each fine tuner handle 3 strings?

Not at all ! The 4 fine tuners are for the 4 playing strings. The 12 resonance strings are tuned with guitar pegs on the head.
