That was my initial reaction to trying durian candy as well, followed up by a hint of dirty old wet socks or wet garbage. I would not wish this taste on my worst enemy.

I had a durian creme filled doughnut (with chocolate icing) in Bali. That night I discovered Arrack, a lovely South East Asian distilled liquor, which eventually scoured the garlic/vanilla/rotting taste out of my mouth. I also got to try "fresh" durian later, which not only smells like a body in a ditch, but has the consistency of rotting sea food. No amount of any kind of liquor could cleanse my pallet. Worse, the smell was in my sinuses for three days. Good times.

My mother and I went on vacation to Thailand when I was younger. My mother had me haul around a sliced open whole Durian for a day in my backpack. The smell afterwards would not leave and after returning from our trip, my high school teacher had to leave my backpack out in the hall because the smell left over by the fruit was so bad. Tried everything to remove the smell and finally had to buy a replacement backpack.
Trivia note, the smell is so bad, even some hotels will kick you out if you bring a Durian into the hotel specifically because the smell is so damn hard to get rid off.
That's why I'm intrinsically skeptical of people that are like "Oh, well it SMELLS like dirty socks and dead flesh, but it tastes like vanilla pudding". I mean, maybe if I have a head cold, but otherwise, smell is a great deal of taste.

I’ve been married to a Thai for 30+ years, and that’s what it might take to acquire a taste for durian. The Pizza Company chain in Thailand offers a durian pizza (which I categorize as a dessert pizza). Our last trip in 2018 I was actually surprised how much I liked it.

Durian's an acquired taste, and that's putting it mildly. That's coming from someone from Southeast Asia and has eaten Durian when it's in season for most of my youth.
I'm a white dude who loves asian cuisine. I go to this Chinese market and pick stuff up periodically. I decided I wanted a couple of mini mooncakes. I thought I had grabbed a mung bean one. Guess I wasn't really paying attention. I ate it. The taste wasn't immediate...but the after taste. Oh holy shit. I looked at the package: durian. That durian hit me like a ton of bricks and it was bad. I couldn't get the smell out of my head for like an hour. I was on the verge of gagging for the whole hr too. Good times.
Surprised you got past the first bite -- most people think the smell means food has gone rotten. It's apparently a joke in some markets that foreigners will buy these cookies/cakes only to throw them away without eating because they don't know what Durian is and think the smell means the food has gone bad.
@@Hypatia4242 Nah, not at this market. They even sell whole durian. The smell in sweetened durian isn't bad. It was just the after taste. There's a huge population of Chinese in that area, so, of course, durian is common. The grocery store is pretty big on the west coast and mid-west. It's called 99 Ranch Market.
@@24framedavinci39 You are so lucky. You're near one of the few markets that would allow for both a properly cooked duck and a properly fermented tofu. My anecdote comes from family who visited Thailand. Some tourist guides list durian as an exotic, creamy fruit. They downplay the smell and after-taste, leaving many foreigners confused. I've also heard it's banned in the airport, which makes me wonder how the Irish folk were able to import it!

Well he does not like walnuts either so cannot trust his tastes.Evetyone has different taste so they percieve differently foods. I have never had durian but tried the candy and even if at first they smell like gas the taste isnt bad,its.complex that cannot be described..To me they dont taste of rotten onions because i have never had a rotten onion..its one of those funky taste that either you love or hate..i want to try the real fruit 😁
And Anthony Bourdain has eaten it just fine on multiple occasions. My family loves the stuff but I can't stand it. Funny thing is that it smells great to me, it smells overly-sweet but tastes awful.

To me it smells like ripe tropical fruit, and tastes almost cloyingly sweet. I love how they sell tons of durian snacks in airports in Thailand. The flights smell amazing

@@mzpinkeyez7806 I get that. I can't stand the texture of ground meat, one bite of a hot dog or burger makes me physically ill, but I love the smell when my mom cooked cheeseburger, or I love steak, which is basically a better cut of burger that hasn't been ground yet.
@@SessaV my oldest daughter and myself can't stand the smell of cooking meat and BBQ is the worst to me it smells like burning hair ugh!!!🤢🤮 But I have a nose like a bloodhound because my other senses such as my hearing is horrible and my eyesight is bad I'm completely deaf in one ear and partial in my right and if I don't have my glasses or contacts on I'm useless so my sense of smell is crazy I can smell things long before most people can and that sucks sometimes LoL!🤬

I learned that lesson a few years back: post any surgery, but especially any major surgery, don't watch ANYTHING that makes you laugh or cry. Even if you enjoy it during, afterwards you feel 10 times worse than you did before watching and/or can't breathe properly for a few hours. Actually... that's probably what eating durian is like.
Having eaten both ass & durian fruit, I can confirm that you are 100% irrevocably incorrect. If you eat an ass that taste like durian, you should reevaluate the choice of partners & their hygiene.

Again try eating it frozen. It has little smell and it is very creamy like a custard. Frozen it's like a vanilla custard very little onion taste and the smell is not a deterrent. Because you have eaten it improperly already, may I suggest you literally hold your nose for the first bite. Your body may have already decided it's a bad thing. So sorry this was unpleasant for you. It can actually be a good dessert.

LOL... real durian fruit tastes much better than it smells and has a very creamy texture.. but those processed products only seem to capture that smell... in south east asia that is a really popular fuit.. you just arent allowed to ride a public bus with ripe durian in the heat.. the smell can carry for 2 city blocks.. lol
Andrew Zimmern (dude who will anything) had to spit out Durian. It is an acquired taste for some, like cilantro. My wife and MIL love it (Chinese), my FIL and I want nothing to do with it.
