Thanks for tasting the pickles I sent. I really enjoyed this video, especially the moment between Ciara and Dermot, and everything that came after it. I glad you (mostly) liked them (especially you, Bláithín), and I'm sorry to have inflicted so much sourness on Pagan. Sadly, the Kruegermann company may be out of business. They posted something on their Facebook page about stopping production, and say they may start making pickles again in 2024. Their website seems to be down. I hope they do re-start their business. And if they don't, you TRYers can be proud of the fact that you tasted some of the last pickles from this fine company. Why do things I love have to die?

From an article published in "The Eastsider" back in May of this year: "It’s just too difficult to find employees who want to do this kind of work anymore, [Greg] Kruegermann said. Meanwhile, the Kruegermann brothers who’ve been running the operation here are aging out. Greg Kruegermann is 64, his brother Carl is 59, and their kids don’t want to take over the business. "Making pickles is too hands-on. You get up early and fix machines. It seems like only us old guys are doing that. [...] It is hard work." I've seen this happen a lot with family-owned businesses, unfortunately. By the time the founding generation is ready to retire, their kids or grandkids already have careers of their own and there's no one left who wants to, or is able to, take it over.

@@ballyastrocade5672 I am seeing that in the town I live in now. I don't eat barbecue a lot, but there is one place in this town on the East Coast. And it's going out of business because the owner is in his 60s and tired and ready to be done with it. If anyone wants to buy it from him, he is willing to train them and teach them the ropes. But so far, no 1 seems interested.

For Pagan: Cucumbers for pickling refer to cucumbers that are used for processing or making pickles. This doesn’t mean they can’t be eaten fresh, but their thinner skins, crunchy texture, and smaller seeds make them ideal for pickling. That and their small size which means there is little prep work involved. When I was a kid our neighbours at the end of the road had a fairly big patch for pickling cukes, and when they would go on holiday in the summer, I was chosen to be the person to water them in the evenings. I was allowed to pick whatever I wanted, and they were great freshly picked from the vines. Usually we would be give a few jars when they were done all the pickling.

@The Try Channel: This one hits home for me, as, taking after my grandma, I like to do a little pickling myself (and "re-pickling," using the juice from several jars together to pickle somethings else, like onions, tomatoes, or yellow squash). She used to make amazing kosher garlic dills from the cukes and dill from her own garden. As this was the 1970s and '80s, there were not a lot of pre-mixed packets like there are now, so she used a recipe of whole black peppercorns, mustard seed, coriander seed, alum, kosher salt, dill, minced garlic, in a hot bath of distilled white vinegar (just hot enough to kill off any bacteria living on the outside of the cukes). What's crazy is, as great as she was at this, she was originally from the South, where sweet pickles are preferred (i.e., "bread and butter pickles," etc.), yet she never made those, and she herself didn't like pickles! I was truly hoping you would get to try a bread and butter pickle, especially for the gal who doesn't like pickles, as she might find them a lovely change from what she's used to. Bless her heart, not knowing it's all cucumbers! B&Bs are seasoned with coriander seed in a sweet vinegar brine (and are even available made with Splenda, for people who don't want the actual white sugar). Anyway, this was delightful, especially Dermot and Ciara together.

Cucumbers and gherkins are from the same plant but a different variety. The name 'pickles' actually refers to a variety of pickled vegetables. I think it's mainly a Jewish thing. So you will definitely find it in The Netherlands ('augurken') and Germany.('Gurken'). Taste and quality varies depending on brand. There is also one with a touch of honey, very nice, You should also try Amsterdam Onions.
