On this episode of reasons to love Ireland... Blessings from an American who visited Ireland a long time ago (and loved it).

The content here seems so raw, it's almost like steam is just still in regular service. The way the trains are running at a good clip, and they don't even bother turning them around to look pretty. They just run tender forward if necessary
@OscarOSullivan
@OscarOSullivan 2 месяца назад
The reason the tender engines are run tender first is the lack of turntables on the network these days.

Ah, the nostalgia this compilation evokes! 1950's childhood train journeys. Brings to mind Robert Louis Stevenson's (he of 'Treasure Island' fame) poem 'From a Railway Carriage' From (1885) "Faster than fairies, faster than witches, Bridges and houses, hedges and ditches; And charging along like troops in a battle, All through the meadows the horses and cattle:..."

@Noel Ryan Me too Noel.We used to get the train from Amiens Street station to Belfast to visit our cousins for 2 weeks in the Summer. Then they'd return with us for another 2 weeks. We used to run down the platform to admire the loco and chat to the driver who always had time to answer the many questions of train-mad young boys. Magic memories.

a few of our trains were built by British manufacturers, the v class in the first clip was built in Manchester and you're right, the tank engine is an ex LMS loco. A lot of mechanical engineers would move between Irish and British rail companies, so yours and our trains are pretty similar. there were a few Irish engineers that helped design trains for BR and brought there design idea's back to Ireland.

I’d suggest it isn’t, but looks close to the sea, where the salt water air is attacking the iron. The top of the rail head would indicate wear through use. Certainly the state of the ballast and top don’t suggest rare use.

I never knew Ireland had their own locomotives! I would have thought you guys used BR hand-me-downs or something like that. Does Ireland have the same loading gauge restrictions as the UK? Very cool, and excellent video.
@Frserthegreenengine
@Frserthegreenengine 4 года назад
Ireland uses a different gauge altogether. Irish tracks are wider than British and most European tracks.
@dennisroyhall121
@dennisroyhall121 3 года назад
@@Frserthegreenengine The usual term is « Broad Gauge » ie « wider » [ your word ] than Standard Gauge ie 4’ 8 1/2 » and less wide [ to use your reference term...] aka gauges are « Narrow Gauges ». A common Narrow Gauge is 3’ 6 » and the « widest » ie Broadest. Broad Gauge in Britain was double this width at 7’ favoured by the great railway, ship, tunnel and bridge building engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel who however lost his battle for his Broad Gauge of eighty-four inches and made to convert his Great Western rails to Standard Gauge. Thank goodness he wasn’t made to go down to Narrow Gauge of half the width of his commendation....!

Very few steam locomotives were bought second-hand from Britain. During the age of steam, Irish railways either built their own locomotives or bought them new from manufacturers (mostly) in Britain. Also, many chief mechanical engineers (the people responsible for designing locomotives) moved between British and Irish railway companies. That's why our steam locomotives look very familiar to British eyes. Irish railways use Irish gauge which is 1600mm (5' 3"). It's a broad gauge and is wider than those used in the UK and most of Europe. At one time a very extensive network existed. Thats been cut back since the 1960s but there are still rail connections between Dublin and the major population centres across the island (with the exception of the northwest). At one time Ireland also had an extensive 3' narrow gauge network too but today Bord na Mona's industrial railways and a few heritage railways are all that remains.
