I'm Japanese/Irish, which is why my name is down as Celtic Samurai. So this is like the ultimate music for me...

I'm Korean, Welsh, Scottish, English and truly appreciate the mixing of Celtic and Asian culture, too.

what id really love to see is an ensemble of 2 shamisen, a kokyu and a shakuhachi playing an irish song. That would cover a typical celtic setup, 1 shamisen being like a banjo/mando, the other being like guitar, kokyu-fiddle and shakuhachi-tin whistle, that would be pretty cool.

This works very well, it has the playfulness of Irish folk but the solmnness of the shamisen.
@mortum000
@mortum000 14 лет назад
that sounds so freaking cool. The sound of the shamisen as a melodic element really sounds real familiar to Irish music because it sounds a lot like a banjo tone wise.

well done! me being Irish i had to give you guys tons of respect, traditional Irish music is hard to play as is but to pull it off on the Shamisen earns all the respect from me, the whole piece sounded so natural and true to traditional Irish sound. love it love it love it

@edelahaye Hi I am one of the Shamisen players in this video. Thanks for commenting and my sincere appologies for our mistake on the accents. as you can see we play a Japanese instrument. none of us are well versed in Irish music. But all three of us just love the sound and feeling of it so much that we had to try it out ! We appreciate the advice because without it we would never know what we are doing wrong. Thanks again for taking the time to comment.

Great stuff! I've been trying to locate Monster of Shamisen version of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly to show to my kids but it doesn't seem to be turning up here on RU-vid, I wonder if you have a link? Years ago, I used to often see a Tsugarur shamisen player busking in Kawasaki Station (mid-late 1990s), this really brings back memories, thank you! :)

@MML2BeachedWhale Hi I am one of the Shamisen players in this video and I have to tell you I am sorry to say that none of us actually know the names of the tunes either. there are two distinct tunes and we learned them by ear and without reference. We just know they are from Ireland.

I like the Japanese fire extinguisher at the end. Why is it there? Next to a toilet roll? Mysteries are awesome.

that's was awesome!!!! i am the 2nd generation Irish descendant. I have a question about the Shamisen. what"s is the default keys for these three strings. cheers
@Cobenator
@Cobenator 14 лет назад
A fire extinguisher and a roll of toilet paper? Just in case the licks get too fast and torch the place, and the toilet paper probably for fans that just can't control themselves. You guys shred!

@shamisendemon
@shamisendemon 14 лет назад
@HerrMead If you mean the notes of the open strings, the Shamisen is unique in that there really is no default key .The 3 strings are adjusted during a concert many times.When the key of a song changes the Shamisen player adjusts in a few seconds to the new key. However in the recent past many players have chosen the key of C as a standard. This is just a way for everyone to be able to have a common key but the fast switching of the tuningpegs is still common when playing in ensemble etc.

@Uuuuurk Celtic music actually did borrow a lot from many other European forms of music, including nordic music, especially considering that the vikings did own ireland for some time, look it up.
@shamisendemon

@kitadefan007 depends on how broken. If you really want to look into a cheap way to obtain a shamisen look up Kyle Abbott. His channel here on youtube is fiddlefella. He has written a book called Shamisen of Japan etc. look him up and his contact info. etc.

It is sad that people have to have mental breakdowns. I saw a saying I liked hear a while back. I think this saying is great because it applies to everyone. "All wars are civil wars, because all men are brothers." ~François Fénelon
@shamisendemon
@shamisendemon 13 лет назад
@kitadefan007 I have some bad news for you. Shamisens don`t exactly fall in the cheap catagory of music instruments. With some effort you may find someone selling their Shami USED for a low price but even then the cheapest would probably be a little more than $250. new beginer Shamisens usually start at about $1000-$1500. And the pro models can be as much as $30,000.00. But either way goodluck and my advice would be look for people selling used gear etc.

Living in Ireland and being from Ireland are two different things. Somone from Ireland has more value in their opinion whereas the opinion of someone just "living" in Ireland is nothing but Crap! HA HA. Take that, fool!
