IRO Rear Unibody Stiffeners, Project Overlander Gets a Stronger Frame!

I'm finally back at Project Overlander. Today I'm welding in the rear Unibody stiffener kit made by Iron Rock Offroad. These stiffeners add a ton of strength and rigidity to the thin XJ unibody frame rails. This kit not only strengthens the outboard face of the unibody rail, but also wraps fully underneath, making them much stronger than other designs. Thanks to the guys at IRO for providing this excellent fitting and well thought out kit!

I cant say the music was enjoyable (but I DO have access to a volume button); but, what I can say is your work is amazing. I dont think I have ever seen frame stiffeners look so seamless when installed. Thank you for taking the time to post this. Again, amaxing work, Sir. You have a gift with that welding machine!

Another professional one Tyler. Frame stiffeners are on my winter project list. One day I opened the back hatch on uneven ground and it wouldn't close again until all four tires were more on an even plane. Until then I didn't get the amount of twist the frame allows. Appreciate you, Tim and Nate staying with the core values that made this channel great. Started having to skip a few from the other part of your team. They seem to be going the sensationalized, click bait, sellout, used car salesman route. Look forward to your next one and thanks again for keeping it professional.

Looks great and enjoy the videos. If you do more of these may I suggest putting on a coat of weld through primer on exposed surfaces between the frame and stiffener to help reduce rust forming inbetween them.

ya, if you live in the salt belt or anywhere rust is a problem, that's a good idea. I live in the desert and rust just really isn't a problem here, so I didn't worry about it.

I'm curious what you did about the heat shielding on the pass side? Mine appears to be held on with a stud, due to the level of rust it's not coming off without a fight and I'd hate to ruin it. Thanks

Wont grinding the welds all the way back down compromise the strength since so much has been removed?

May I ask, what type of welder did you use for this and what wire feed? I’m just trying to begin to weld and want to practice so I can do most of the work on the Jeep myself. I’d really appreciate your advice and thank you so much for this video. I love how careful you are and that you really made sure it would be perfect.

Looking for an opinion. What are your thoughts on using self tappers to hold the stiffness in place before welding? I do not know how to weld, but im contemplating buying a mig and starting to practice before i touch the xj. Ive always wanted to, but ive never had the funds or need. The thought behind self tapper would be. If i was going to lay to have it done. I would do all the prep work, them use the tappers to line everything up before having someone there. Im extremely picky with alignments, so that way i could take my time get everything perfect, them let someone just focus on the welds to save on cost.

Only thing that concerns me is no more under coating or protection between unibody and plate. Is water gets in there goes your unibody from the inside out.

Seems overkill to me unless you're gonna run one tons. The unibody is supposed to flex not be super stiff.
@MrMrsregor
@MrMrsregor 5 лет назад
flexing metal = cracked metal... besides have you ever tried opening the back hatch of a loaded xj while the unibody has a little flex ? you then have to move the xj to just to get the hatch or doors to close because nothing lines up

@bleepinjeep
@bleepinjeep 5 лет назад
There are some weld-over paints you can buy to coat the inside if you are worried about rust. I live in the desert, so rust is really not a problem here. I'll paint the rails and put a thick coating of undercoat on them and not worry about it.
