This time, another Holden is in the mix... with issues as usual! Nice car, but it’s been fighting me, check out the progress made! Keen on some merch? Online store: etsy.me/2zluIiC
I used to have a Statesman exactly the same colour and mine wasn’t looked after by the previous owner either. I ended up rebuilding the engine and the amount of crap in the oil pickup made me wonder how it was running with oil pressure in it. The oil pickups in those were stupidly small with only a hole about the size of a fifty cent piece to suck the oil through. Eventually they get clogged to buggery.
I know this sounds rough but worked for carboned up engine. I did this on a 5l. Basically flush sump with 5l diesel then 8l of diesel 2x 10 sec start up with a throttle stab drop it then diesel oil and filter (higher detergent content) for a couple of heat cycles then standard oil change and filter . Gained about 15 psi oil pressure. Rockers where barely visible at the start just 1 big mass after it was quite clean very impressed my boss was a holden tech for 35 years
Always love your music clips Mark 🤘 Keep up the great work reviving these classics , I love your channel as its more Mopar/Ford but everyone loves a Statesman , cheers 🍻
Use to have the same problem with the v6 ecotech motors. We found it was the carbon sludge build up blocking the oil pickup so we use to put 5L of degreaser or diesel in them for a few days to try break down that sludge. Probably should of thrown a car cover over that nice red XD in the back ground, could see all the over spray from the clear still in the air all over it. Keep up the good work mate👍
Glad someone’s keeping Aussie RADwood stuff alive. I was looking at these and the Supercharged V6 ones for my first car back in the day. Then I bought an E30 instead! Looking forward to seeing more from this build.
Great channel mate! I can definitely relate to 5 litre problems. My VT Calais has recently developed a knock at operating temp. With 293k on the odo it's probably due to age more than anything else. So now I'm up for a rebuild $$$. Keep the content coming! And a friendly reminder to please wear a mask while painting my dude.
Not sure if you'll read this, when doing an oil change try using Morey's Heavy Duty Oil Stabiliser. I use it every time I do an oil change, you get instant oil pressure almost every time, if I leave the car sit for more than a week it takes a few seconds but within a week (up to 5 or 6 days) the oil pressure light is gone as soon as the engine starts. When I change my engine oil I buy the oil I want and diesel engine, 2 oil filters and engine flush. I put the engine flush in and run the engine for 3-5 minutes, then drain the oil, change the filter, fill with the diesel oil (apparently it has detergents in it), run engine for 3-5 minutes, drain again, change oil filter and add recommended amount of Morey's oil Stabiliser (for engines it's about 1/4 of maximum fill level) then fill the rest of the way with the oil I wanted to use. Doing the extra oil flush removes the rest of the old oil and allows you to see the condition of the by looking at the dipstick, cause sometimes the old stuff left over can make it look dirtier than it should, eg. Diesels and turbocharged engines.
I only spray once in a blue moon and it’s always just a panel here and there, but once I’m doing a bit more of it, not that I want too haha I will get myself a mask 😷 keep the COVID out too
304's absolutely hate oil flushes, unfortunately you were in a bad situation either way. The pickups are way undersized in the 304 sumps which means any small trace of carbon plugs them up and kills oil pressure. Then oil flushes loosens that carbon and sends more to block the undersized pickup. Unfortunately I've learned this the hard way several times on these engines. It's one of those, your damned if you do your damned if you don't type engines. On a more positive note, loving your channel mate, long time subscriber :)
The drama will not be an oil thickness issue. I’ve seen this same issue on poorly maintained Holden V8’s (mainly the efi engines due to the small ‘acorn’ style oil pickup) If often happens when crap and corruption gets to the oil pickup, especially if some inlet manifold gaskets have been changed and crap was allowed to get down to the sump or long intervals between oil changes which is clearly evident on your engine. What happens is the crap in the sump blocks the small sized pickup and when you turn the engine off the crap often falls away from the pick and then when you re-start you get oil pressure for a while... Diesel oil (detergent based) will help wash crap out of the engine but the trouble is getting it out of the sump plug hole. Plus the oil pickup will need cleaning out. The sump really needs to come off if you continue to have this oil pressure issue. Good luck.
Big Al pretty much on the money mate, i failed to mention in the video that I have flushed and drained the oil approximately 20 times, and yeah I think it’s just a matter of eventually getting all the crap out. Cheers mate
G'day mate, nice result for a quick paint fix ...the colour of your statesman is Genesis blue...the VH SL/E colour is Indigo Blue if I remember correctly 👍
Hi mate, awesome video. I'm in Nuriootpa and just picked up a VP Calais that's the same colour combination as your statesman. I'm also restoring a 55 FJ Holden panelvan
Never been a over the top fan of the NC Hurricanes but it is weird when they are on a really clean example, they suit it. I would probably personally keep the standard NC centre caps and squirrel away the LTD (which were on the standard LTD pepperpot rims) ones and use them for cars and coffee and the like as they are really hard to find in a set. The wire wheels in general I was hoping one day would be replaced if we got those subscribers numbers up! But it’s still a stunning machine! Onwards and upwards this year! We might get to some numbers where we can get a warehouse next!
Love my VS 5.0. The only way is to take the sump off, clean out and clean up the pick up. This happened to ours, and was the only way to fix it. Where can we get a boot garnish from, the mrs backed into a tree!
Interesting I have 5.0V8 VR Holden ute, don’t go light on oil as rear main seal is weakest link with 5.0. Got 220kw or 300hp with 2.5 exhaust system, it goes hard n sound nice.
Yeah filled up with diesel or mineral turps and that it's sock over night and then crank it over but don't start it and then flush it out Maybe a good idea to remove the oil filter and blow back through it to clean the pickup get all that crap out it
Almost bought a VQ "HSV Enhaned" Stato back in the late 90's. With carbon build up: every 3rd oil change of any car ive owned (my BF Tonado, GT500/ XR8 monstor, V6 Adventra & even my now FG & wifes 2010 Kluger), i throw in a good quality Diesel engine oil, run it for > 10,000km and change it. Old mechanic told me that probably 20 years ago, and never had carbon/ sludge issues (even with the Adventra V6 "Sludgetec" motor). Diesel oil has much more detergents in it, and shit to break down any carbon buildups from EGR's etc
With your blocked pick-up, drain the oil, sump plug back in, carefully tip 4 litres of general purpose thinners down the dipstick tube & let it soak over night. DO NOT START THE ENGINE You can rock the car side to side but you don't want thinners on the crank seals, so be gentle.... Drain the sump & you will be shocked at how much sludge comes out. 👍
Best way to fix it is fill sump with strong degreaser let sit over night let drain put more than flash with water sprayed up sump drain hole fill with oil run for hours the put new oil pick up is usually blocked
I was searching for this comment because I have been through this same situation with a friends 304, cleaning the pickup requires you to remove the sump to do it properly and it's a big job so you must be getting pretty good at it by now if you have cleaned it 20 times already ? they are notorious for blocking the pickup if not serviced regularly as you know.. i like to notch the side of the pickup to help with flow, the bell mouth pickup's are so tiny and with it being notched you can still suck oil even if the sump was pushed hard up against it. Don't give up on it they are such a nice car to drive 👍
Im sure your on to it but the oil pumps on holden reds are external and can be swapped easy peasy. My old hq had weak oil pressure and a pump swap cured it instantly.
Congratulations your subscriber are growing I predict by next year this time 100k. Thanks for the entertainment n informative n fun content. You ever get to USA dinner on me Bill in ft Wayne Indiana
As a former spray painter that color is called Botanica mica from memory ran on the vs1 and series 2 commodores also where is your ppe when sanding and painting from the time I was in the game 1985 to 2004 it was always compulsory to were ppe in smash repairs
@@TheIronEmpire fucking right man! I just found your channel, I like old Holden's, moved here from UK. I just got into straight edge after dealing with addiction/demons for my whole adult life. Would love to hear your side
Change the oil pump to a standard volume one not a hi vol If it had that much crap come out of the oil the pick ups screen is no doubt blocked That's the only problem 304s have and don't put a Gilmore on it!!!! Paint the tank in asteroid silver with black straps to 👌 I've got one similar sus my videos
The factory clear coat on my EF wagon is still good after 25 years and nearly 500,000ks. The stuff that’s peeling is where the bonnet and guards were resprayed around 15 years ago...
I think that’s the same colour as my fairlane. Which was fully fucked on the roof boot and bonnet to. I’d say there’s a lot to be said for keeping the thing under cover and the paint maintained
The EA - ED Ford clear over base metallics generally lasted a lot longer than the Holden stuff, but AU onwards failed very early, maybe even the paint was offended by the styling...😂
Hi mate your vids are great. Question how do you/jake go with spraying 2pk without a booth ? As we know 2pk is generally not good for the environment or your health when proper ventilation isn’t used.
Andrew Kirk we get a bit of dust in the paint without a booth Other than that the shop has a filter and fan setup, not that much of is makes it to the fan, this shop is literally like an acre indoors
Long live the mighty small block holden 5ltr the real heart of a lion .general motors and Ls and go get stuffed.308 with brocky at Bathurst go over the hill is awesome sound that no LS or ford motor can make. Long live holden 2017 sad day for Aussie pride.
Those are fighting words mate! Haha personally I think regardless of your brand preference, it’s a sad day that there is no Aussie manufacturing at all anymore ☹️
I failed to mention in the video that I have cleared the oil pick up many times, but it continues to get blocked as more crud makes it’s way down from the top of the engine
Paint came up great for the effort involved. You would have spent more on oil then paint haha. You are going to have to drop the sump and clean the oil pickup and anything else you can reach really. I think you are wasting your money doing oil changes past this point.
I failed to mention in the video that I have cleared the oil pick up many times, but it continues to get blocked as more crud makes it’s way down from the top of the engine. Cheers mate!
The problem is beyond that though mate, because I’ve overcome the oil feed issue. But the junk is continuing to come down from throughout the motor, I’m not pulling the sump every 100km 🤦🏻♂️
@@TheIronEmpire .yeah mate I hear ya. The pick up in mine was all but blocked because lack if oil changes but once the pick up had been cleaned no more problems
@@TheIronEmpire hey mate.. the same thing happened to my calais that was sitting for over 10 years.. i did oil change after oil change , pulled the sump off twice to clean the pick up and i was still having the same issues. Untill I pulled the intake manifold off and cleaned it .. Thats where the shit was coming from that was blocking the pick up. Haven't had a drama ever since
Chris Milton seriously, because I had the window tint booking before I had the oil problem. And by the time of the booking date I’d thought i had over come the issue
@@TheIronEmpire Seriously, so that’s why you took the oil to pick up the newly tinted car - for a roadside oil change ? Just in case? What a Drama... yikes Apologies, No room for Foolishness - thought you were serious about making 5.0 Holdens great, not pretty
No mate, between my home and the tint shop I lost oil pressure again.. so I brought fresh oil to resolve the issue.. which I did. Now you’re upto speed mate 👍🏼
The last true Statesman was the WB. A V8 Commodore with electric windows is not worthy of the Statesman name. You are working wonders with it though as you usually do.
