Did anyone else think Davos was Bullseye when he first showed up and threw tin foil throwing stars around?
@SkullCloset
@SkullCloset 7 лет назад
I kind of preferred Davos over Danny, he had stronger motivations, he didn't shove the religion down people's throats, he seemed more invested in the Iron Fist than Danny was and I think he was kind of a better actor. (Totally my opinion and I can't really explain what I'm trying to)

Didn't think he was Bullseye, but I was SUPER confused why he knocked out that innocent guy and stole his truck then threw foil ninja stars above an innocent mans unconscious head lol

I'm with you. Basically the writers made Danny out to be a bit of a dick, just angry all the time for someone who supposedly spent half his life meditating, and he got sucker punched by too many henchmen for someone who supposedly spent the other half of his life training to be a living weapon. Davos at least had a purpose for his moods and a motivation. Danny kept going from being a complete dick to sounding completely patronising when he was trying to sound wise. They need someone who understands chinese and/or buddhist philosophy to write the cosmic dialogue, they need an Asian stunt director to make those fight scenes better and they need to spend less time in the office and more time in the streets.

The Draconian Pilgrim It really baffles me: why did the they choose Danny? Just like you said, Davos was more invested; he not only had the motivation but he also seemed to understand the responsibility tied to the title of the Iron Fist. Danny just decided that he might as well train since it's not like he's getting home anytime soon. Granted, training may have helped him get over the loss of his family (then again, not so much, since it's still haunting him). Ultimately, Danny reaches his goal and isn't satisfied. Then he just leaves his responsibilities because he sees a freaking bird? I did enjoy the show, though.

Here's my HUGE rant about Iron Fist... The way I see it, there were THREE main problems with Netflix's Iron Fist. 1. A fundamental misreading of Danny Rand's character. As a trained master of kung-fu, Danny is not a confused, irrational, basket case, as depicted in the show, but centered, thoughtful, and even charismatic. The character as written and portrayed by Finn Jones is a whiny weirdo, whose motivations and strategies are ridiculously unclear. He's totally uncharismatic and almost painful to watch. 2. There's no THERE there. The previous three Netflix shows, Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, were all about something more than their superhero aspects. Among other things, Daredevil played upon Matt's inner-conflict between his religious faith and his desire for vengeance. Jessica Jones dealt very skillfully with the ideas of emotional abuse and manipulation. Luke Cage was heavily coded with themes about what it means to be a hero in the contemporary Black community. But what is Iron Fist about? Why did Danny decide to desert his post in K'unn L'unn and return to New York? Why should we care if he regains control of his father's company? 3. And finally, the biggest fail, and maybe the most important one, was the failure to present exciting or even convincing action. As a story about a kung-fu master, Iron Fist should have had the BEST action scenes of the Netflix series, instead, what we get is something on the level of a CW show, actually, Arrow's fight scenes are A LOT better. It seemed to me that the kung-fu was treated like an afterthought, in favor of endless boardroom drama. The skill level of Iron Fist himself was inconsistent to say the least - one minute he's taking on dozens of trained Hand fighters at a time, the next he's struggling against petty thugs and a totally untrained guy old enough to be his father. There were many more problems, I could go on and on. I could have forgiven EVERYTHING if the fighting was great, but it wasn't. I really wanted to like Iron Fist, I actually finished the whole thing, it was hard to look away from the train wreck.

100% correct. He struggles in things such as managing his emotions (hanging on to 15 year old trauma or hitting the kid in the dojo), diffusing situations (mental institution), and being respectful (chuckling at a homeless person). I thought for sure this show could easily be on par with Daredevil, but the action sequences, acting, and story line was just weak....

Goddammit this writing... 1. Danny: No more traps. No arrests. Now we deal with Bakuto the way we should have from the beginning! Davos: *kills Bakuto* Danny and Colleen: What the hell, man? You can't just kill people! There are consequences!! 3 episodes later Hogarth to Danny and Colleen: You two are wanted criminals. Either turn yourselves in, or prove your innocence now. Danny: I have to kill Harold. I WILL kill him and end this. Colleen: No, Danny. It's too risky. I have to be the one to do it. Danny to Harold during finale when he can just kill him: It's over. You're going to prison. *Harold then proceeds to get to his gun and shoot Danny. Ward arrives and shoots, kills Harold...* 2. Danny: I trust this person! Why don't you?! Danny 2 episodes later: What? I've been lied to! I can't trust that person anymore! Danny 2 episodes later: What?! I trusted you! Danny 2 episodes later: I can't trust you, but I need your help. Danny 2 episodes later: You betrayed me?! Danny 2 episodes later: *cries* You lied?! My parents!!

Anyone else disappointed that Nelson & Murdock were not Danny's lawyers when Harold frames him. That could have led to an Iron Fist DareDevil team up to get the tablet back and clear his name that would have been amazing.

I wish they had just scrapped the corporate intrigues all together and set the first two-three episodes in K'un-Lun leading up to Danny facing the dragon. It would have made it more impactful when he lost the fist if we had seen his struggle to get it at all.

I'm only 6 episodes in but some of the choices the show makes are baffling. I agree with Mason, Danny should have known to just say he maybe grew up in a monastery or something. And the Danny Rand character so far isn't very likable. I just started reading the current Marvel run on Iron Fist and Powerman, and that comic is great and alot of fun. Hopefully we get a Danny Rand that's more like the one depicted in the comic.
@supersaiyangoddess4293
@supersaiyangoddess4293 7 лет назад
But he doesn't live in a world where the things he's saying are considered crazy. I mean this is the same universe where Aliens invaded New York and were fought off by a group of mostly Superhumans. You would think they would be more open minded towards people with Superpowers.
@PranavanathanYoganathan
@PranavanathanYoganathan 7 лет назад
I totally agree but it's never really clear how much Danny knows of the world or current events. It's bit that I don't like the character,but I'm just not totally sold yet.
@supersaiyangoddess4293
@supersaiyangoddess4293 7 лет назад
+Pranavanathan Yoganathan He might not have known about those events but the people of New York do. So it did feel like they were being a tad bit irrational by throwing him into a mental hospital. With Luke Cage and even Jessica Jones people were only mildly shocked by them(some more than others) but with Iron Fist people act like it's the craziest thing they've ever seen or heard. Claire won't even take him seriously when he tells her that he fought a Dragon yet Thor fought Magic elves in London.
@SchulzEricT
@SchulzEricT 5 лет назад
@@PranavanathanYoganathan You say he's not likeable. Nando v Movies did a video where he outlined how he would fix it; in short, he would've had him dream that the Hand infiltrated his family's company, that way his motivation for leaving is to stop the hand, not because he's an entitled prick. (The video has a lot more to it and is really good, but that's the short of it.) I think that would've been a huge improvement. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s8sew9RqGMw.html

Internet: There's never any suggestion that Danny doesn't know what the internet is. He has no money and has no access to the internet -the other guy just happens to have a stolen one and offers to look something up for Danny. Lack of Mysticism: Maybe you guys didn't notice (!), but Madam Gao makes Danny fly across the room just by waving her hand in his direction, Harold comkes back from the dead, Gao talks about having been interrogated in the 17yh century, Gao is able to know what Colleen's grandfather used to tell her as a child, Gao is mysteriously able to see Danny when he sees her on a video monitor to his surprise. I think there just might be a little magic going on there.The climax of the show reveals that Danny experienced a foreshadowing of his encounter with Harold when he entered Shao-Lao's cave. Also Danny is being guided by the hawk (which also appears to be a manifestation of Shao-Lao) which has had a profound effect on his life. Seems to be a fair bit of mysticism going on there.

(Iron Fist Spoiler... kinda...) I expected the Iron Fist be the Marvel Universe's own version of all things Martial Arts. That said, do a comparison between fight scenes from the show with similar scenes from different Martial Art Movies and ask who you think did it better? Episode 4: Hallway Hatchet Fight --- The Transporter Axe Fight Episode 4: Elevator Fight Scene --- Ip Man 3 Elevator Fight Scene Episode 5: Cargo Truck CQC --- Kiss of the Dragon vs Boxer scene Episode 6: Russian 2 vs 1 fight --- Prince of the Sun Cynthia Rothrock (Park Fight Scene) Episode 6: Weapons Master fight --- Ip Man vs Cheung Tin Chi Episode 8: vs Drunk Guy --- Drunken Master final fight Episode 10: Office Fight Scene --- Kiss of the Dragon, Taekwondo Twins fight Episode 10: Courtyard Escape scene --- Enter the Dragon Lee and Roper vs Han's Men Episode 12: Elevator Lobby Fight scene --- The Raid Machete Fight The examples I pointed out are usable search phrases. Even in those videos, while you can see where the physics defying wire stunts were happening, there's still a huge difference in fight choreography quality when comparing it to the Netflix show. I have no qualms with the Finn Jones race casting, nor the problems with the script (like severed fingers inexplicably regenerating after a resurrection and people just forgetting about it), but would it be wrong of me to feel underwhelmed by the action choreography shown in the episodes?

Also, fight scenes were like that because of the style they used. It's traditional Kung Fu, and is mostly concentrated on defensive approach, that's why it's slow, character doesn't fiercely go against enemies like Daredevil, his fighting style isn't as aggressive. Actually show was pretty faithful to this style of martial arts and it really impressed me, you don't usually get old traditional Kung Fu in media.

Darth Mau and the Obi-Wan Kenobi fight was kind of like an old western. when the antagonist and protagonist finally meet the drama and the tension was in the build-up to the fight not necessarily the flight itself. kind of like The Good The Bad and The Ugly or they stare at each other for like 25 minutes LOL and the fight is over in 5 seconds it's all about the build-up mate.

I expected this show to be on same level as Daredevil season 1, just with lot of amazing kung fu fight scenes and focused more on asian culture. Something like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon meets superhero origin TV show. It was still decent but it could have been so much better.
@RakelaK67
@RakelaK67 7 лет назад
Iron Fist was a good series... could have been paced a little faster... but as a whole... it was equal, maybe even slightly better, to Luke Cage (mainly because Iron Fist is more consistent and Luke Cage ended in a bit of a train wreck). It's definitely strong enough to prove that all the negative critics were wrong about their analysis of this show. It was very watchable... very enjoyable. Very re-watchable the closer we get to The Defenders being released.

The Iron Fist series is, at best, 6 episodes of narrative material stretched out to 13, and done in the clunkiest way. It was so obvious that many scenes in every episode exist purely to kill screen-time. The film-making adage that one should "go in [to a scene] late, and get out early" sure has hell isn't applied in these Marvel Netflix series. Just horrible.

@maxo.8431
@maxo.8431 7 лет назад
Barry Jordan Which, in my opinion, is an interesting dynamic. People are complaining that Danny is dumb, and I think that was the point. He only had contact with the real world for like 10 years before he ended up in K'un Lun, so he shouldn't be street smart and he shouldn't understand betrayal, things like that. He's different from the other Defenders and I hope this trend is continued and perhaps broken throughout his character arc in the Defenders,
@brandonreed09
@brandonreed09 7 лет назад
Well that is debunked when he presents a very low key story for the press about what happened to him.
@brandonreed09
@brandonreed09 7 лет назад
Well that is also debunked by Danny's memories of playing games with Ward. Rules are for Pussies, remember. Danny clearly understands betrayal, when the guys who "saved him" start beating him with sticks. etc.
@SpoonDude
@SpoonDude 7 лет назад
I feel like Danny was told not to get too much into Kunlun by the Meachums because people would think he's crazy. Ward believes rules are "for pussies", not Danny. When he was beaten by the Kunlun guys, it was punishment not betrayal. He can understand punishment, but he hasn't actually experienced it. I like that Danny is not the street smart cynical guy like Jessica Jones or Daredevil. Makes him different and I can't wait to see the characters clash. Prior to watching the show, I expected him to act like Arrow, expecting that he's figured out everything and he's got a plan knowing what he's doing... buuut he doesn't. And it makes it way more interesting.

I'm sure someone will accuse me of being a fanboy... but honestly I don't think people really "get it"... I mean.. think about it... he was taken when he was 10... 10 years old is still a time when kids believe a lot of crazy shit... maybe not santa claus crazy... but still.. the whole concept of chi and stuff is pretty believable to a 10 year old. So now this guy with this perspective was taken to a place where these ideas are common place and spends 15 years in it... it makes sense that it wouldn't occur to him that other people wouldn't believe in it right away. Then with him getting on the students... of course he did.. that is what he grew up with! It was an insight into his upbringing. And why would they teach him strategy that doesn't apply to guarding the gate? That is his whole mission as the Iron Fist. He is perfectly suited to do what they trained him to do... but what he is doing is far outside of his (new) comfort zone....

I can agree that Danny Rand wasn't cast very well, but I disagree with the narrative that his character is written too "dumb". He was a 10 year old, coddled, sheltered, rich momma's-boy when he's thrown out of our world (after watching both of his parents die) and sent to live in a feudal era civilization that did literally nothing but prepare him to be a living weapon. That's not a recipe for a well adjusted, functioning member of society in our world. I don't really like Finn Jones' portrayal, but I think he did convey that sense of childlike naivety, and reasoning of just smash your face at it to try and solve a problem, pretty well. I think the character work, acting and story were actually solid, and the action sequences and pacing were the real glaring flaws.

I really like Iron Fist. I don't understand most of the criticisms it has received. It seems like people don't pay attention to the details. Danny was 10 when he was effectively killed in our world, and then he was taken against his will to a repressive monastery where the monks beat him and he never had the time to mourn his family. Of course he'd be naive in our world. The last time he was in it he was a little boy. And as for the action, they tried to shoot in like comic panels but it doesn't quite work until the challenges. And the drunken master fight and gate fight are both great. And as for him not being as good as Daredevil at fighting, Daredevil gets hammered to shit in fights against Russians and biker gangs, yet Danny barely even gets hit by the hatchet mob. I felt all the fights showed how OP he was against street level thugs, even if they were a bit schizophrenic in their execution. I also found Danny to be quite believable in the situation he was put in. His naivete and trust is to be expected as he hasn't seen these people since he was a child and has no idea of their actual intentions. But you see him grow and figure that out. I also want to add as a martial arts film afficionado and a fan of hong kong cinema in general, the fights are no where near as bad as people are making out. I get that some of them are subpar, but some of them are very entertaining. Hatchet men. The challenges. Drunken Master. Bakuto in the bunker. The daughter of the dragon. The gate fight. Davos. I think people are just parroting what they have heard from others with regards to the fights.

ultimately iron fist is dissapointing...however its not horrible..unlikable protagonist but culd easily been fixed with character development later on...personally liked the story better than daredevil s2 hand stuff with elektra tho...some great fight scenes tho weaker than daredevil...the story with ward was much more interesting early on only...i say dont change the actor for danny rand tho...i think he is portrayed as the writer intended nd i understand the actions he chose...but i look forward for him in defenders. in the end its probably a 6/10 or a 7/10 at best...not the best but not the worst

The majority of previous Iron Fists were Asian, though I believe at least one was Middle Eastern...? Anyway, Danny always believed that he was the first "outsider" to take up the mantle, but that was because Orson Randall abandoned his duties and fled K'un-Lun (just like Danny did in this series) and those in charge of the mystical city basically tried to cover it up, hunt him down and erase him from their history.

Wasn't interested in Luke Cage and I'm not interested in Iron Fist. I was gonna jump back on for the Defenders but that's apparently coming out midway through this year and as far as I know it's currently only a couple of episodes long so I have no hopes for it. There's also a Punisher thing happening at the end of the year so I have a very "ugh" and a *tug of the collar* feeling.

I LOVED Iron Fist! It's as good as Daredevil. I love that it had more character and wasn't just punching like Luke Cage. I loved every character especially Danny. He is definitely my favorite defender. The Meachams were a very interesting family. And I loved all of the Hand storyline. I'm glad they didn't have all that race crap like in Luke Cage. It was so annoying and made it divisive. He was raised by monks what does his race have to do with it? Man yall are hating so hard on it. It was so good though.

Luke Cage wasn't divisive. The reviews were almost universally positive and they have the second best villain behind Kingpin with Cottonmouth. Iron Fist was pretty dope though, i like how they didn't over complicate things with the hand because that was kind of an issue for me with Daredevil season 2(It was still great though).

Iron fist is clearly a better kung fu guy than daredevil imo because he has no real problem at beating a load of the Hand's best fighters, where as daredevil has had many a problem with fighting them. That being said, the kung fu in this was no where near as entertaining as in daredevil.

I havent watched it all yet so.... and ive jst finished ep6 so im yet to get the good stuff? But im disappointed by the whole 'i can take on 7guys with battle axes in a narrow space but cant take out one guy and protect another from being stabbed' wtf?! like at this point in the series, i feel a blind man with devil horns would do a better job!! Even daredevil could 'see' a martial arts kick coming before it hits! And ye i agree the first eps are like filler...Also so far the 'iron first' isnt being seen at all. I thought it would be a guy with a hell of a punch but naahhh (not so far anyway). Even without he Chee or what ever he should be able to just sweep the floor and take out a bunch of guys! He seemed kinda...i dunno like rage-y at first - almost hurling off the top of the car park in the car in 1st ep? Im SO glad they're coming together too!!! I was hoping or a daredevil appearance too - or something!! Daredevil is still definitely my favourite. Theres soo many annoying things in this series i hope it gets better D:

Iron fist was good. the first 6 episodes dragged but I enjoyed Finn Jones as Danny (hopefully he gets a little more built in the fututre) and loved Jessica Henwick as Colleen. But the last 6 episodes were amazing! That Davos and Danny confrontation about the fist and why Danny left Kun Lun was great also Harold Meachum was great and I loved him!!! I'd say that this more Danny Rand... the show and not Iron Fist yet because he isnt THE Iron Fist yet and it makes sense why he doesn't have the costume
@c0cksmak
@c0cksmak 7 лет назад
I just finished the show. I gave it a 2/5 stars. Its a really really huge step down from the quality of the other shows. Daredevil is nearly flawless for both its seasons. Jessica Jones is great, Luke Cage is kinda boring and a meh character portrayal but serviceable. And Iron Fist is just a terrible show with terrible acting and worst of all terrible fight choreography. Theres really no excuse for an organization that made such amazing low budget scenes like Daredevil's that are iconic now. There's no attempt at danny wearing a costume throughout the entire show. He's shown as whiney and a coward and an idiot for a guy who according to just the show's logic has been training and meditating his whole life. His "center" should be a lot more centered even if he's a 25 year old naive guy.

I think Finn Jones did ok, and I like that Rand is naive and dumb. He 25 years old! He's the youngest Defender, he should be naive.
@FearTheLivingDFG
@FearTheLivingDFG 7 лет назад
Well it's also because he's been living with monks for 15 years his social skills aren't exactly at their peak when he's living in a bubble and pretty much doing nothing but training. So he's pretty much kept that 10 year old mentality.
@cartoon80s90s
@cartoon80s90s 7 лет назад
Are you serious? 25 years old and it's okay to be naive? This indicates serious brain trauma or just plain stupidity. I didn't hate the show, but that was the most serious problem with the show imo. It's like he did not mature one bit in the 15 years he was stranded in K'un Lun. The second biggest problem with the show is that he was barely the Iron Fist in it. 99% of the time he was just a guy who knew martial arts, and even then the action could have been a lot better.
@FearTheLivingDFG
@FearTheLivingDFG 7 лет назад
That's kind of the point... He didn't mature in that sense. His life was stuck in the mentality of a 10 year old once the plane crashed and he was taken in by monks. He's never had to deal with the emotions he's going through, the closest thing he's had to a friend is more akin to a rival and his closest thing to a family regularly beat him to turn him into a weapon and ingrained in his head that he'd have to fight the hand. So yes in Danny's case I'd say it makes perfect sense that the character is naive at 25. And no he isn't instantly Iron Fist just like Matt wasn't instantly Daredevil it's called growth. This season is very much about who Danny Rand is with hints of the greater mystical world that surrounds him. It's obvious he didn't finish his training and left when he realized he could. So just like Matt is shaping out to be the Daredevil we know Danny will take that same journey to become Iron Fist that we know. Hell the only character that has been like their character in the comics pretty much from the start is Jessica Jones and that's mainly due to her not being a superhero but even then she's not a perfect fit.
@Barrydavillain
@Barrydavillain 7 лет назад
I think the point is he was chosen as the Iron Fist, but clearly didn't complete his training. He didn't know how to use the Iron Fist properly, recharge his Chi, heal, etc. The Iron Fist in the 1940s could light up both hands, Danny only used one. He has a lot to learn. And street smarts is not a give with age, it is with experiences in the real world. but I loved the show, I def wanted more.
@brandonreed09
@brandonreed09 7 лет назад
The problem is that we expect him to be more like Batman from Batman Begins or even Daredevil who also had similar training. Danny seems more like a guy that went to K'un Lun for a summer, got the Iron Fist and came back to New York.

The reason that Danny Rand is so naive is because Finn Jones said in an interview the trauma he went through in the plane crash and the death of his parents, and being hit with sticks, has stunted his mental growth. The reason he acts so immature and impolsively is because he's supposed to be a 10 year old boy mentally. Unfortunately, I don't think the show got that to come across well
@SchulzEricT
@SchulzEricT 5 лет назад
I mean, making him a petulant child is not a great choice if you're trying to make your character likeable, relatable, and/or heroic. Also... Billy Batson (Captain Marvel) is a kid, but he's not immature and unlikeable. If one wants to make the protagonist young, or developmentally stunted, you can play up his child-like wonder and focus on making him generous and enthusiastic, not selfish and immature. Yes, many kids are selfish and immature... but those aren't kids you should be making superhero tv shows about.
