She's actually kind of an asshole to James. I have to work with dysfunctional marriages all the time, the signs are pretty obvious that she doesn't treat him with respect. On the other hand, there's obviously more to their relationship than we see, so maybe it just seems that way. Maybe it's cultural or something.
We enjoy humor. We just don't want endless eye-rolling quips in the films specifically just for laughs. Wonder Woman handles the humor really great- it's more organic in feeling natural and doesn't feel forced.
Darrell Bales The secretary that's in the film for 2 whole minutes? Yeah- that really didn't feel forced as she just comes across as a generally jovial person. Wartime has that effect: it can bring someone's humorous side to the surface just as it can bring someone's depressive side to the surface.
... well you are welcome to like her... but Melissa McKarthy could have given a more realistic performance. Wonder Woman was fine. You don't have to get so defensive.
Darrell Bales I'm not defensive. I thought that the actress brought a nice brief enlightening mood at a very good point in the film and was onscreen for a perfect amount of time. Aside from this film- I personally cannot stand Melissa McCarthy. Her approach is like that of Chris Farley and turns me off any film she's in. They were spot-on with cast this actress who perfectly embodies that character (who originated from the very early comics). Wonder Woman is still going very strong at the box office and will seemingly give its competition a close run for a 3rd consecutive weekend at #1.
Idk man... my point with the Mccarthy thing was Mccarthy is the Jar Jar Binks of cinema and so was that character. That try on new outfits scene was cringey af. But hey it's just a scene or 2...
Pro-tip: turn on adblock, or go on another website, if you search Weekly Planet on google there are several other options without ads. I love them, and I usually leave the ads on to support RU-vidrs, but for this podcast this is just unenjoyable with the constant interruptions
I loved the Wonder Woman movie, but I thought the action was the weakest element. There was just too much noticeable cgi, specifically with cgi versions of whole characters, that really distracted me and pulled me out of the experience. That being said my favourite aspects of the film were the character moments and the subtextual exploration of whether or not humanity is worth saving. The scenes on the sailboat and where Steve Trevor is teaching Diana how to dance are fantastic. The one where Diana is walking amongst the gas in the village was also a very powerful image, how a figure of hope and love is blinded by a literal expression of hate and violence. Overall it was a very fresh take on the superhero film despite maintaining a lot of similarities with others of its genre.
I thought when Hippolyta said "You may not come back." She meant: You might not survive Aries and you may not make it back. I was disappointed that the gods are "dead'. If Steven Trevor didn't die, it would be pretty cool if Hermes saved him, and the gods were reintroduced. But if he is dead, it would be awesome to see Wonder Woman go to the Underworld and see him again.
Change the murderer in the murder express (?) would be pretty bad for the story. Not gonna spoil anything, but the reveal of who the killer is is pretty great, and it wouldn't really work any other way
SPOILERS I'd have to disagree with Mason on Steve Trevor surviving. Bringing him back would completely negate his sacrifice and would be pretty offensive in my opinion. Bringing him back just doesn't make sense and simply wouldn't work IMO
You gotta love how immature and hypocritical these die hard Snyder fan's are. Five days ago they hated Rotten Tomatoes and wanted it shut down because RT "hated DC" their critic's were "paid off by Marvel" and their reviews and rating system were "irrelevant and didn't reflect the quality of the film", and now Wonder Woman gets a positive reception and a good RT score and now Snyder's DC fan's love Rotten Tomatoes and they can't stop quoting the RT rating. These people make it so embarrassing to like DC. Snyder fan's you can't have it both ways where you embrace and champion the positive reviews and ignore and dismiss the negative reviews. If you accept the Wonder Woman rating as legitimate then you have to accept the rating and criticism that MoS, BvS and SS got as legitimate. I've also seen Snyder fan's claim that the praise and RT score that Wonder Woman has received should be retroactively applied to the other DLCEU films. These Snyder Dude Bro's are the worst thing to have ever infested any fan base as they've turned what was once a friendly rivalry between Marvel and DC into a bitter and petty pointless fight.
I don't think its necessarily Snyder fanboys, just DCEU fanboys in general. Why any adult would go to the lengths to "defend" (calling Marvel shit doesn't really make DC better guys) something so insignificant in the big picture is insane. And actually ave some good points, for God's sake. Its rare, but some of my own viewpoints on the DCEU and other controversial things have been changed by some random internet guy's calm rational comment or post.
+spartanB0292 From countless interactions with these people I've come to the conclusion that DLCEU fan's are generally more Snyder fan's than actual DC fan's (that's why they accept and defend Snyder bastardization of the classic DC characters) and then there's actual DC fan's (who love and understand these characters and just want the film versions to be accurate to the comics). Just a few examples of things that DLCEU fan's have said to me in defense of Snyder's terrible interpretation that I've figured out that there's a massive discrepancy between DLCEU fan's and DC fan's. These are all real by the way. I had someone tell me that Batman has killed consistently for 40+ years in the comics and his "no killing, no guns rule" is a relatively recent character trait. (So dumb I couldn't believe someone would believe it). That comic book Superman kills regular humans all the time in the comics and in the comics he is not a happy character at all and he's not a sign of hope. (amazingly stupid and completely false) That Batman viciously kills dozens of people including cops, mutants and the Joker in The Dark Knight Returns. (they even cited page numbers as proof and the page numbers had no relation to anything). That Snyder understands these characters better than Alan Moore, Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and Grant Morrison combined. I was even told that Snyder better understood Batman better than Bill Finger and Bob Kane. DLCEU/Snyder fans are beyond delusional and it's also quite clear that they don't even possess the most basic familiarity with the DC characters.
+Guypersonmanthing3 I know it's crazy that the "Great Marvel/Disney Conspiracy" has now escalated to the the point where Marvel are now paying off critic's to like DC movies. Does this mean the DLCEU fan's are now Marvel fanboys?
LatinaFangirl the best slow mo were in No Man's Land and when they were retaking the German city right after. Themyscira fight was a bit weird with slow mo every few seconds almost
LatinaFangirl that's what Snyder does in every movie. It's annoying, just like how M. Night will predictably make a movie revolved around some kind of plot twist or how James Wan horror movies are full of jumpscares and goofy paranormal stuff
Its confusing, because not all of the slow mo was CGI anyway, especially on Themiscyria. If they had been normal speed I would have liked them better, the fake-ish CGI be damned. Slow mo should punctuate action scenes, not be the damn letters and words. The one good use I think was when Wonder Woman climbed up into No Man's Land (which, btw, props for not making some dumb "well, I'm a woman!" joke). With the music swelling and the shocked soldiers' faces, I had chills.
Q: "Can Wonder Woman go back to Themyscira?" A: In the movie, the line that Wonder Woman's Mother says is, "You know if you leave, you may never come back", implying that she might die. This is easily confused with "You can never come back". Tricked me the first time through as well.
Completely agree with Claire, loved the warrior women atmosphere. Simultaneously wanted to be apart of Themyscira but also know I would immediately get the shit kicked out of me
Guys you should totally watch the Hercule Poirot ITV tv show, it's sooo good. David Suchet is a god among men. Perhaps its better if you actually live in the UK. it's a lot of fun to visit locations from the show or guess buildings they used... anyway solid show with funny old timey banter.
The stuffiness is part of the appeal thou :) . Also there's a huge tonal and production evolution between start of the show and the final episodes (spans 20+ years after all). If you like (British) old timey crime drama, this is not to be missed! The Ustinov films are good too, but Suchet has become my favorite Poirot over the years.
26:22 the only reason i will watch this movie because we barely rarely got a freakin murderer detective movie mystery.... i dont know who the author is i still gonna watch it and support it.... we rarely got this kinda movie...
Hippolyta said "Once you leave you may never return." She didn't say that Diana can't or couldn't or won't be able to return. Perhaps she just wasn't sure that Diana would be able to locate the island again. If Steve Trevor and the German soldiers were capable of physically setting foot on Themiscyra- Wonder Woman should be able to as well so long as she discovers a method to locate it.
they reveal it in a later episode, basically one of James' friends was at an airport, and Kevin Spacy grabbed his butt and tried to seduce him, to which James' friend politely declined. He didn't want to reveal it because Keven Spacey hadn't revealed he was gay at that point, but... ye
I recently found this channel and now I listen to every show. It's great. But... holy fuck the commercials are insane. It ALMOST but not quite ruins it.
i thought it was weird that in the start when the germans are going into the amazon world, theres a swastika on the wing of chris pines broken plane even though this is set during world war I.
At first, I thought this was a recent podcast as they're talking about Wonder Woman 2017, but then James says Neighbours is huge in England, (Britain, James.. Britain), so it actually must be around 25 years old.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but the scene where Steve Trevor drops a grenade in the building and it blows up as he's flying away, weren't there kids in there? I swear I saw children making bullets
Zak Grant Though I'm a fan of Pine's Kirk- his portrayal as Steve Trevor is so much more three-dimensional. Although I have yet to see Beyond. I kinda wish Pine reappears as a descendant of Trevor- possibly somehow linked distantly but resembling his ancestor as a current/modern version of Hal Jordan?
Ungreatful Duck I like the scene where she goes off on the General after he says that dying and getting killed is "what soldiers do". And the scene where she helps the guy with PTSD feel needed and important as "Who will sing for us?" Classic Wonder Woman!
I seem to be one of the few people who wasn't a big fan of Wonder Woman. The twist with Ares was stupid. He was literally trying to negotiate a peace treaty, then sent the only person on the planet that could stop the gas shit towards the gas shit. I LOVED Steve Trevor and the dynamic with him and Diana, but I felt like I had seen that crew before. Not only because they were just the Howling Commandos, but it had Spud from Trainspotting. I don't mean it was the same actor, it was literally the same character.
FunkyDrummer Yeah, I feel like they should have just had Ares be the German General. Also, what was up with the General having powers, I didn't get that if he wasn't anyone important
lakerballer00 They did that purely to make people think that he's Ares. Just making him a total asshole would have been good enough. That scene with him and Diana talking about the Olympians seems real pointless now. To me, the villains are the only truly bad thing about the movie.
It's funny how we haven't gotten a good new villain since Ledger's Joker or Loki. Hopefully Vulture in Spider-man Homecoming will be good, since he isn't written to be killed by the protagonist like almost every other comic book villain.
The first 3/4 of the movie was really good. The ending was generic. I still enjoyed it but it was your every day comic book ending. But WW in comparison to the rest of the DCEU is really amazing.
LOVE your reaction to H8 mail .. please get RAW to animate this H8 mail segment :) it's the friggin best! .. also the part with your wife needs animating :) 2-4-1 on the vids! great week!
1:18:30 Tell her to watch the BVS Ultimate Edition and to avoid the Theatrical Version like the plague. LOL After seeing Wonder Woman- her scenes in BVS hold so much more context now: Her rolling her eyes after Lex's speech regarding Zeus striking someone down with a lightning bolt (I would've shit a brick had she said "Dude- that's my dad".) The emotion behind her voice when she mentions to Bruce of Lex having her photo. Her facial expression/response to seeing a copy of the photo on the computer.
Personally, I'm absolutely convinced Tom Cruise is Dorian Gray in the Darkest universe dark universe universe with monsters movies keep up the good work ya d*ckheads
sucks that I can't listen to the podcast until after I see the movie since these guys have no clue how to NOT spoil a movie. Even before they get to the spoiler's part they've already given away so much
*WONDER WOMAN SPOILER BELOW* I think they shouldn't have revealed Ares. Dianna should've killed the german guy, the war wouldn't immediately end, she is to shaken to help Chris Pine, he still dies the same way, and that reignites her spark a bit and gives her some hope that there is a goodness deep down in people.
The movie was written by men...people just ignore that fact. It was really good and I loved the part where Diana couldn't get through the revolving door. Did she want her to be a Marysue?
Actually Ludendorff was a Nazi, he supported Hitler. Which makes me want to know how the non-metahuman DC timeline. Without Ludendorff, it might be possible that Hitler never came to power, or at least until not until a bit later
Thanks for your weekly dose of entertainment and highly important news about the world of pop-culture and shit. However, I'm not a fan of the new "gamer" turn of Caravan of Garbage, come on, you're above doing cheap "Let's Plays", just talk about forgotten comic books and movies like you did at the beginning of that segment... That's way more fun, the title makes more sense that way and it's more in line with your general content
Honestly I feel like Hal Jordan sucks but if you want to tell a story it's kind of like his why not just turn Steve Trevor into Green Lantern? Maybe the ring save them from the explosion because he's saved the bunch of lives and proved himself Worthy or something equally as stupid
