Iron infusion can be a great way to top up your bodies iron however it is not cure-all for fatigue and does have risks. Preston Family Medical discusses why your iron may be low and what happens during an iron infusion
I watched this video before my iron infusions and now that I've gotten 4, I just wanna share my experience for those nervous about it. It's as painful as getting an IV (so not bad at all imo). My side effects were dizziness and body aches. I was also really tired for a couple hours afterwards but recovered and felt normal quickly. Id recommend having someone drive you home the first session just in case you get dizziness or something else that might inhibit your driving. Honestly my anxiety about it was way worse than the actual infusion. You can do it guys! Just bring music or a book or something to do while you wait and you'll be okay
Exact symptoms that I had for 2 days. I couldn’t have driven home. In fact I slept for 15 hours the first day. All that has gone by the 3rd and 4th day. Xx
Thank you for this informative video. I had my iron infusion 36 hours ago, and feel awful right now. But I know it will pass. My symptoms of iron deficiency anemia were fatigue, brain fog, couldn’t concentrate, breathless on exertion, tongue swelling, restless legs and arms, constantly getting sick… It can only get better. Thank you doctor.
@@RunningPure sorry for the late reply, I did have inflammation markers but they couldn't find definite autoimmune disorder. I have problems with extremely dry mouth and eyes and tongue swelling - the iron and vitamin symptoms helped so much. I haven't investigated further. In the UK, the GP does TSH for thyroid unless you pay for other tests.
The advice to take oral iron ever second day is something doctors and nurses here in the USA have never told me about. Going to go to every second day. Thanks so much Doctor.
Same here! They're talking about iron infusions already since I've been on oral iron for almost 5 months with no change in my actual iron levels or TSAT. I stopped taking it entirely because I had a feeling of "What's the point since it isn't working anyway?" With this news, I'm also gonna try picking it up every other day and see what happens!
After years of taking different iron suppliments Ive gotten an infusion today... at my appointment prior to the infusion he told me that it is found to be most effective to take iron every other day... 🇨🇦
I watched this video as we are now going through a horrible time. My 33 yrs old friend is now in the hospital with brain death as a result of heart attack after the iron iv 💔
Going on my third infusion with venofer due to fibroids and only good results for me so far. I felt fine after receiving the two infusions. No immediate side effects. I did have some muscle aches intermittently between the two sessions but my energy level has increased by at least 50%.
Same here! I started with venefer which I had no reaction to, then switched to injectefer. I didn't notice any difference but the energy levels are booming. I feel like a real boy again lol. Now to get the blood levels up.
My level is 6 . Been going on since last June taking iron daily 350mg . My IV was half dose Venefer . It was weird my first one . No pain for IV . I thought she gave me Benadryl as felt groggy. Nope no Benadryl . Next day I was hyper like fright and very talkative . 3rd day crashed . 4th day hyper again but didn’t accomplish anything . 5th I’m so darn tired and in bed all day. I hope it’s my last when I have my bloodwork in a month . This has been going on for over 6 years and finally find out it’s from taking Nexium and Magnesium since 2005 . Going off of Nexium isn’t fun as causes worse stomach acids and don’t recommend ever taking it for stomach issues. Keep you posted and hope I’m not immune to absorb iron from Nexium.
Please keep us posted. I’m iron deficient and super dizzy. I’m having a similar experience after my first iron infusion. Just had my first venofer infusion 1 of 5. I didn’t have any immediate reactions. The 3rd day I got a slight headache, 4th day slight headache stomach pains. 5th day I’m dizzy and weak. I’m hoping things get better. I was told it takes a month after all of the infusions are given to see an improvement.
@@carascottvo got 3 sessions in Jan and now I’m back for a new set. This time it’s making me very tired and I’m getting horrible lower back spasms and bloating. Also, iron has to be infused very slow or I end up with bad chest tightness
@@yvettegarcia2497 Thinking of you and sending healing thoughts! It's so much more complicated than, "Just get an iron infusion." Any procedure can be nerve-wracking and disruptive!
Thank you Doctor you answered all of my questions with this video, I was looking for information on this procedure because unfortunately I need the Iron infusions due to my body not absorbing enough iron to keep my hemoglobin numbers up and I was wondering if it was as bad as the potassium infusions I get but it seems that at least I won’t be in terrible pain while the infusions is going 🙏🏻❤️ thank you again.
So interesting. They served me tea at the infusion center..smh. I had my first of a series of 5 iron infusions last week. I actually felt good directly afterwards but got groggy by the end of the day. The next day I felt TERRIBLE. I was walking slower and had aches so bad...and a HEADACHE. since my infusion I also cannot sleep more than 4 hours a night as opposed to 8. I do notice leS Brain fog...and more clarity...but it's been 3 days and my body is still aching.
I got a Ferinject iron infusion 3 weeks ago. No side effects, no allergic reaction, no stains... nothing. I feel better, not as tired as I was and my mood has improved. Not as irritable as I used to be (after finding out I had had low ferritin for almost 10 years but last year was really low, among others, like iron in blood, etc).
@@TheMisswhite78 Mine was 6 and sometimes 4,5. Now, after the iron infusion I had 5 or 6 weeks ago, I don't know. I am having a blood test next week so I will see the levels.
You missed number 4 reason which is why I needed an infusion - Microcytic anemia from inflammation / chronic disease. Slightly low serum ferritin, and extremely low serum iron.
@@Aimee03110it's a combination of my levels for serum iron, transferrin transferrin saturation , TIBC (total iron binding capacity) and ferritin, with consideration on the levels of my platelet count, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW, Hemoglobin, WBC and CRP. I have anemia of inflammation so its quite complex at times.
I've always battled with low iron levels I'm due to do the procedure tomorrow, Wednesday, 23 March 2022. Just out of curiosity, is there any link between low iron levels and lack of concentration or feeling confused? I suspect there is.
Great video, thank you. I just put the link to why 1 &1/2 to 2 days after my infusion, I felt like I had a head cold & body aches (more so than normal). Something the doc or nurse didn't tell me about. It's been a week now & I'm starting to feel a bit better, slightly more energy. But now, worse sleep than before, thought it couldnt get more worse (used to wake up more tired, now bad), insomnia has gotten worse 🤔
@epicgoddess920 glad it's nit just me. Had a follow up blood test yesterday to see if iron levels have improved. Fingers are cross it made a difference. But I'm still constantly tired, so not holding my breath
@epicgoddess920 oh gosh ( sorry for my late response). I hope you are feeling better. I had my blood test & my Iron has improved, but into acceptable range, but I'm still tired. My doc doesn't seen to care though. She just sees good numbers.
@epicgoddess920 I hope you have had another infusion now & and hopefully, you start feeling somewhat better. I don't really know of any alternatives if you are not improving.
Oh I had that so bad. That’s a sign that your iron is deficiency is really low. I recommend the iron infusion. You won’t miss the ice as you won’t want it anymore. 🤗
❤❤❤❤❤ I’m going to be getting an infusion and I’m excited about having my energy back. 🎉🎉🎉 I’m grateful for this video and explaining the risks because my doctor said there are no side effects but I knew there had to be some possible side effects.
@lornafarrelly7797 thank you for this. It is now day 5 of my first iron infusion and I'm still having side effects; dizziness, fatigue, headache, achy bones and muscles. I have been a bit concerned about this because it doesn't seem that things have shifted. Hopefully I will feel better in a couple of days. I hope that you have figured out the cause of your symptoms so that you don't have to continue with the iron infusions. My ferritin level was 5. I am hoping that it goes up and stays up!
@@donitamontgomery5786 my doc told be my folic acid was 2 which is the lowest. He. Explained unless the levels of that weren't higher, the iron infusion wouldn't be effective. So I had to supplement that before iron infusion. Plus he injected Vit D, B12 and other vitamins. Did you have another low vitamins?
I'm scheduled to have it done due to fibroids which causes heavy periods. The plan is to have partial hysterectomy but my count is 6.4 and doctor won't do surgery until my count is up. I'm nervous about the side effects of the infusion. Definitely don't want a permanent scare.
same case. had my iron infusion yesterday to bring my rbc, hemoglobin, hematocrit to normal levels..i’m planning to have my hysterectomy next month either laparoscopic procedure or robotics
@@Amatullah.574 The infusion changed my life..Once my iron level went up honestly I felt like a new person. 1st thing I noticed is my energy level increased significantly.
On my first infusion i felt very tired after it an then had to have a second infusion a month later an felt shortness of breath with slight chest pains ...
I've gotten 6 treatments, One treatment once a week. My RBC count is high , while My MCV and MCH is very low . I'm on month 2 now without treatment. What would cause this?
Are the IV infusion bad ? My first one is the wendsday and next Wednesday the second one. My doctor told me to do pills. But I didn’t what to risk the side effects. Did I do the right thing?
Hello.. I was planning to get pregnant.. In my routine checkup found my hb levels are low.. So I have done iron infusion yesterday.. Hope My hb will get normal within 1 month.. So after that can i try for pregnancy??
I had mine on the 8th of August next one is on the 15th of August was fine had a slight headache but went away with some pain killers. I need it in order to get a hip replacement as my platelet level was low I am 67. I was lucky my heart rate stayed normal and I did not get any real bad side effects hope this helps.
Hello dr if I took one intravenous iron and I can go back to the iron pills or must to end the whole treatment or they can work together both pills and intravenous iron I hope you can see my comment and answer thank you God bless you.
My hgb is 7.6 and ferritin 17 due to heavy periods and breakthrough bleeding from mirena coil. They recommended me ferrinject infusion as the oral iron pills can't keep up with the ongoing blood loss. Do you also suggest that at this level of hgb, an iron infusion should be given to correct the low hgb and iron? Thanks
they gave you a contraceptive and you got a breakthrough bleeding? That sounds like malpractice tbh To answer your question- I am not a doctor, I am patient with low ferritin and I will receive an infusion. Dont know about the hgb, but google said this: Hemoglobin levels of 6.5-7.9 g/dL can cause severe anemia, and levels below 6.5 g/dL can be life threatening. For me, my storage iron )ferritin) is empty while the over values are ok. I think you could consider; get an infuion through a hematalogist, have hemeiron supplement every second day, and possibly find a new doctor, document and treat the injuries and sue the doctor who caused internal bleeding. Much heeling to you
I'm the same way , already a heart patient. The thought of having a allergic reaction or my blood pressure dropping to low , well let's just say I'm out.
I just got my last of five sessions on venofer I’m 27 weeks pregnant. When will my blood count and levels come up. I’m not feeling better yet and the nurses seemed shocked that I’m not feeling better yet.
How do you feel now ? And if you feel better plz can you tell us when you started noticing any improvement? I’m asking that because my dad on his 4th infusion and him also doesn’t feel any better instead he’s more tired 😪
I know I’m not the doctor, but I know that PPI for acid reflux and other antacids can effect iron absorption. Also foods high in fiber, such as oatmeal. Other things such as caffeine, chocolate can effect iron absorption as well. That’s why they suggest separating the time btw when you take iron & when you eat other foods and take certain medications. Also, try taking orange juice or chewable vitamin C with your iron, it helps it to absorb better
@@Anna-zg7lp too much aspirin can cause your stomach to bleed/ulcers. You should check with your doctor especially a gastrologist to make sure you’re not bleeding from the stomach or anywhere else.
@@Nika-xh1fc thank you! I have been supplementing with iron for a year, but my ferritin level only dropped from 18 to 4.5. Also I had severe constipation while taking tablets. So hematologic proscribed me an infusion of Monofer - 800 mg. I should have it tomorrow. But I don't know what is the cause of my anemia. Yes, I will have stool test check for blood. But I had gastroscopy previously, and they found nothing expect high acid level.
I bled heavy for 5 weeks and now am taking norethindrone to stop the dysfunctional uterine bleeding can this drug cause iron to not bind? My heart beats weird when i lay down and im scared. My hemoglobin went from 12.6 to 10.2. Can Norethindrone mess with my heart?
My doctor said it was time to start iron infusions. I haven’t been able to tolerate pill or liquid iron supplements. Can anyone tell me if the IV infusion causes constipation like pills or liquid can?
Thanks for this video. I am looking it up bc I had my first Infusion 40 hours ago and I have been feeling beat up ever since, intense headache and muscular pain all over. It sucks but it is helpful to know that it is an expected side effect and I am looking forward to feeling a good improvement in a weeks time
I read your comment before I watched the video and was thinking a tiny needle point stain...no big deal. Then I saw the picture 😳😲 and its permanent 🙈 sheesh.....I hope not.
I got iv Monofer 500mg 2 weeks ago. 2 days after, my skin went darker 3 shades from my original color. My white eyes also turn darker than the color before. Are this the side effect? I was very anxious and it makes my self esteem is 0 now. Can I get back my original complexion and my white eyes color?
I had an infusion but had two stop within a minute .My face went red and flushed with extreme pain in the hip region there was no way I could have continued. Why was this and has anyone had a si,ilar experience.
@@dianeyaramos2388 It happened twice both times whilst having cosmofer you think they'd ha e spotted in med notes then went o n to say patients do get reaction to this med I normally get ferrinject. @@designdrama6138 me too, my complexion has turned a darker bronze and the hyperpigmentation around my eyes got significantly darker and my upper eyelids are grey. I am so upset and worried and I am 11 days post injection. Any changes for either of you? Is it from too much iron? Did you do any blood work?
That means nothing lol thats just where they do blood work as well. I got two infusions so far. If your doctor says you need it bc your hemoglobin is low, you should get it. Nothing to do with cancer haha
That's normal. That's where I have had all of my infusions, cancer centers. It doesn't mean you have cancer. Also it is better than going to the hospital and having blood transfusion.
