The original comment just might be closer to become truth than we realize. Governments are trying like hell to limit access to healthy meat and animal products. If the backers and pushers of the vegan movement keep getting their way, their momentum will continue to snowball and sooner or later their agenda of eliminating meat consumption will start to become reality. In future decades it might just be possible that you’d need to get some sort of “permission” to acquire healthfully raised products from animals. If you can get any at all.
I was unable to absorb Iron for years until a pharmacist pointed out that Iron requires vitamin C to be absorbed. Also she said to never drink Coffee within several hours of taking my vit C/iron therapy. After trying her recommendation my blood tests turned completely around. Also, Broccoli has both vit C & iron.
I started eating alot of beets, sweet potatoes, spinach, kale, pineapple, and one time iron infusion and went from 7.2 to 13.2 within 3 mos. Happy camper!!😃😃😃
This was a very respectful and helpful video. As a pescatarian who has struggled with iron absorption all my life, I really really appreciate your considerate approach to people like myself who need help on this front. You're a wonderful man. Love and light to you.
@@Livingtabitha pescatarian aside, I'm just one of those types whose body has always had a hard time absorbing iron. all of the girls in my family line are borderline anemic, despite what diet they subscribe to.
Just got diagnosed with Iron deficient anemia. No wonder I’ve been tired. Dizzy with blurry vision. Restless legs. Grooves in my nails. Bruising easily. Etc. 🤦♀️.
This is so true! In Tibetan Buddhism it is desired - NOT required - that followers be vegetarian. If anyone, including the monks and nuns, requires meat or animal products for their genuine health needs, then they MUST eat those meats and animal products - they are required to look after their physical and mental needs, in order to look after themselves, and their families if they have them, and be able to do their religious practices (which often require physical and mental alertness and endurance).
I’ve been on Keto program for 12 weeks. Just had blood work. My numbers were great especially A1C which was 6.4 from 10.2. Also lost 36 lbs. BUT my hemoglobin was a little low. SO glad you did a video on this!! I was just eating chicken and some beef. Adding seafood. I eat a bunch of eggs.
I’ve been vegetarian/vegan for 21 years and feeling awful awful awful lately. I was super craving meat and ate it for a couple weeks. Felt amazing. Then the guilt kicked in. I went to the doctor yesterday and I’m severely anemic. Terrible absorption too. Sooooo….omg heme-iron here I come. Thank you for this video.
My mother has been anemic since she was a teenager 70+ years ago. She had even had blood transfusions for it. I finally got her on Keto/Carnivore (Mostly), with lots of red meat. She had a follow up with her doc, and they said her iron was well into the normal range (It has always been low before). They told her to quit taking the supplements (which always cause her stomach issues) and they would check it again in 3 months.
When I was a child, I had acute glomerulonephritis. I recovered, but had anemia afterwards. The doctor recommended an iron capsule. After one dose, I refused it because it hurt my stomach (after Mom noticed iron granules in flower pots). The doctor said I could eat raisins and liver. At the next visit, he admitted he had tried that iron pill and it made him very sick. It was satisfying to hear that!
This was very very helpful because i always loved liver that how my family knew when i was pregnant again but can hardly find it in my area now that i am older 😢
This is the most respectful advice I have seen, as a non animal eater. I have been plagued with iron deficiency anemia all my life. Nothing has worked, but now I know why. I will try therapeutic additions to my diet. I can't thank you enough, because you have eased my heart and feelings that sometimes you must amend your eating to correct your health and wellness.
Thanks for the great video. I was drinking tea and unknowingly blocked 70% of iron absorption for years. I was drinking a gallon of tea per day and drinking it with all my meals. I have learned that coffee will also block 38% if the iron absorption if drank within 2 hours of meals. I still drink tea and coffee, but not within 2 hours before or after meals.
Hi i have heard in some videos, drink coffee an hour before or two hours after, i have been doing this 😢 before or after my iron rich meals or supplement, what is best to do please. I have very low ferritin levels on 7. Thank you
I had iron deficiency anemia since I was 10. 40 years later I learned that parasites use your iron to survive. So if you have anemia you should get checked for parasites using non traditional stool testing before supplementing as you would just be feeding the parasites. I had gotten bit by ticks frequently growing up. 6 days of Alinia and it’s now been 3 1/2 years since I had anemia without taking any supplements.
@@marianev559 ALINIA® for Oral Suspension (patients 1 year of age and older) and ALINIA Tablets (patients 12 years and older) are indicated for the treatment of diarrhea caused by Giardia lamblia (a parasite responsible for a contagious form of diarrhea) or Cryptosporidium parvum (a parasite that cannot survive without a host that commonly causes an opportunistic infection in immunocompromised hosts).
Vegan lifestyle came close to killing me. Tired but unable to sleep, gasping for breath and general weakness. It had gotten to the point that I was unable to stay conscious. Mid sentence or just walking would find me on the ground, luckily no concussions. A terrified trip to the emergency room,at the beginning of the Covid craze, 5 days in the hospital, countless probing tests and three blood transfusions later , I’m no longer a vegan but can sleep without ringing in my ears and run up flights of stairs without stopping or fainting. For reasons still unknown, my body could not tolerate a vegan diet.
anyway now I am carnivore for 2 years and do not have this problem anymore. I almost died before finding this diet. I thank Dr. Berry every day for being a straight up guy just selling the message and not trying to cash in fast by overselling this simple home based diet! thank you! Thank you!
You’re lucky, I wish I could have stayed carnivore. It was so easy to manage. But I had 24/7 diarrhea from only eating meat, I had to stop. My intestines don’t absorb the fat. Even with lean meat I had the same response
I was having trouble with iron deficiency due to heavy periods... beef liver saved my life!! Not only I felt great but greatly improved my period overall!! I love carnivore!!
@@Xzyu2 Birth control causes more harm than good, look into it! If you have heavy periods that's estrogen dominance which is from weakened thyroid from eating the SAD diet (standard american diet) by her eating red meat it will beef up her B vitamins and heal her body now and long term as this will heal the thyroid which heals the estrogen dominance which heals endometriosis.
I am also suffering with heavy periods since 22 years and iron deficiency. The doctors prescribed me iron pills. No diet advice. But I am a bit scared to eat animal liver, isn't the liver full of toxins?
Iron requires vit C as well as copper for absorption. My ferritin level was 5, and I have never felt as bad! Ever! I have given up coffee and tea since the tannins they contain interfere with iron absorption. I also take an iron supplement daily and am gradually feeling better. People with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (as I have) are prone to anemia interestingly. The dietary restrictions don’t help; and if one has a beef sensitivity, there is an added difficulty to get enough dietary iron. However, our bodies were made to heal themselves if given the correct assist. Don’t get discouraged!
...🌱🪴🌷last year, discontinued iron supplements due to side affects and fear of iron overload; I get my haem iron from meat, seafood, eggs, goat cheese, etc.; I feel great.
@@donnayoung9215 ...🌱🪴🌷Oh this is a long one: Did you consult your doctor before you went on the Carnivore Diet - yes or possibly not; and if you did he/she may not have approved - yet you could always stop this diet if it doesn’t work out, right; same goes with any supplement; should ‘you’ decide to discontinue iron supps. in the interim - make note of your well-being (do you feel better or worse either way, you could stop or go back on the full dosage or even a reduced dosage); in my opinion, your dosage is very high especially on the Carnivore Diet; look, doctors are not always on point - mine is not; also keep in mind, if you menstruate you have blood loss or if you have internal blood loss (or Both), Iron is important in your diet; also, your body may poorly absorb iron supplements and do better with meat, seafood, eggs; and just a suggestion, you could even ween your iron dosage if you feel weary; (I quit cold Turkey and never felt better - and even on the darn Iron supps, my Doc still labeled me as anaemic - guess am a poor absorber of iron supps.); on the other hand, too much iron (iron overload): zero blood loss, high iron supp. dosage, and Carnivore Diet should be a cause for concern for anyone; and as you may know, the downside - excess iron builds up in the body - is stored in the ‘liver’ and other places in the body - only way to get rid of the excess iron is via regular blood donation; we all have doctors but sometimes, like in my case, I have to be my own doctor; look, it’s your life - it’s your health, so you gotta do what’s best for you; take care.
@Sonja Walker I got off it for a week then started back today because I was starting to feel tired again and that scared me. I was bleeding spotting for 18 days due to the fibroid I'm assuming so I started the iron back I eat 2 meals mostly beef and liver my levels did go up I had my blood checked before I went off it . It's just hard to know what to do. So I'm back on the iron ugh lol
It's not taken seriously - I bet your friend was told all the initial symptoms were stress or in the head - this is debilitating deficiency and should be treated seriously.
@Sonja Walker I know the feeling, often broke down crying thinking I'd never feel better - doctors dismissed me for over a year as it being PTSD or psychogenic - found another doctor who finally said your iron is only 6 - always seek a different opinion even if some doctors humiliate you. Definitely need to make people aware of this - I hope your feeling better and get your quality of life back!! 💞💞💞
This is a fantastic video but it addresses iron ingestion and education (heme vs non heme and therapeutic meats)- I would add that Vit C is what will also be required to address (an actual) absorption problem . Also the role of magnesium and copper should be reviews in helping w iron Absorption.
Chicken hearts and clams are the highest source of heme iron. 1 cup of chopped chicken hearts cooked has double the amount of iron than any liver. Chicken liver has more iron than beef liver. Consuming a lot of chicken hearts lowers your risk of having vitamin A toxicity. My problem is is extremely heavy monthly periods 😢 that is causing iron deficiency.
👍Iron deficiency anemia signs and symptoms may include: Extreme fatigue. Weakness. Pale skin. Chest pain, fast heartbeat or shortness of breath. Headache, dizziness or lightheadedness. Cold hands and feet. Inflammation or soreness of your tongue. Brittle nails.
Dr Berry, I heard that some people that have iron deficiency have issues with storing it and become anemic even though their blood test shows they have good iron levels. Please talk to us about the type of tests we need to do to catch this issue in early stages. Thank you!
Small portion of legumes intake every day may help instore and also eat little bit pumpkin seed and sunflower seeds after every meal. Remember the good stomach acid as well.
I’ve had IDA for several years as a result of multiple duodenum and liver surgeries to remove stones. I’ve had transfusions in the past but currently am getting a B12 injection monthly to help me retain iron. Seems to be working because I haven’t needed a transfusion in 18 months and my test numbers are very good.
I have been about 95% to 98% carnivore (I still have 1 cup of black coffee every morning...) for about 9 months now. I felt great but, I added 1oz raw grass-fed beef liver to my diet everyday and what a difference that has made!! I also consume most of my egg yolks raw as well. They are a dip for my bacon.. I must say that I feel better than I have felt in 20 years.
Any recipe suggestions for beef liver? I am recovering from an emergency appendectomy and my hemoglobin is low and I’ve been fighting low iron for a while. I doing carnivore/keto a few months ago and it has made a big difference in my skin, especially my scalp.
Thank you! This informed me that my eating ice is a symptom of Pika because of my anemia (hereditary). And I have to confirm that when I eat liver, which I really love, I feel way better. This video has helped me because now I'm switching my eating habit to get most of my iron intake from an animal source.
@@petrichor100 I take a vitamin C tablet with my iron daily on my doctor's advice to help absorb the iron. My iron levels are so low, he considered sending me to a specialist. I asked him to wait, that I would take my medicine and in three months will see what the iron looks like. He told me to take a Vitamin C tab with the iron tab for better absorption.
I donate blood 4 or more times a year. They check your iron level and if it's to low you can't donate. Monday my iron was 15, .... good enough to donate and I got a t-shirt !
I donated blood then found out I wasn’t absorbing iron from the bloodstream. Only Hemoglobin or Hematocrit are checked by a blood center before you donate. There are tests to know if you’re actually absorbing into the cells.
They are checking hemoglobin not iron. It’s very deceiving because they tell you they are checking iron. I got into donating blood multiple time s a year. This eventually tanked my iron and ferritin levels. I feel like crap from what I be is low ferritin of 19. Get a full iron panel done before donating.
None. You guessed I’m vegan for 11 years, and guess what I was anemic for all of my life. When I was eating meat, and now. I just have to manage it. So, I guess that meat should of healed me years ago. Never going back to meat by the way.
You could have a fibroid if you have long and heavy periods. I experienced the same, became severely anaemic and was later diagnosed with a fibroid. A lot of women have them but don't always realise due to no symptoms. It might be worth getting checked.
@@happyhands117 Hi. What treatment have you done in treating your fibroid? I've been suffering from anemia due to heavy bleeding because of fibroid. My fibroid is 7cm now.
@@YvetteDyanne if it’s small enough you could try green tea extract 800mg, and vitamin d to help shrink it . Those two have studies that show it works. Obviously a clean diet. No grains sugar or dairy. Fibroids love sugar and estrogen. Lots of cruciferous veggies to help get rid of the extra estrogen that’s feeding the fibroid. Eat foods that make you poop regularly bc fibroids happen from toxic buildup in the bowels. Lose some weight if you’re overweight because we store estrogen in our fat. Make sure to eat organ meats like liver, heart, etc to build up iron and b vitamins lost through heavy bleeding. There are other things to try but this is a good place to start if you are hesitant to get surgery and want to try to heal on your own.
I went to donate blood recently and was rejected because my haemoglobin was too low. I eat lots of animal protein every day my whole life but also drink a lot of coffee, which I heard inhibits iron absorption. Can I increase haemoglobin by quitting coffee?
Dr. Berry said in another video that you can still drink coffee...just make sure that you don't have coffee an hour before you eat and then wait an hour after you eat to have coffee
I saw some research that indicated iron absorption is enhanced with good intestinal bacteria. After eating high-fiber and other foods to help feed the good gut bugs, my aerobic (running) performance seemed enhanced, even without a lot of meat in my diet. Getting heme iron (with added vitamin C for absorption) has always been my go-to way to keep iron levels up.
I had it years ago and then had a total hysterectomy. I thought since I was done with periods that I wouldn’t have to worry about it. I was wrong. I passed out in October and fell down my stairs. Apparently my hemoglobin was dangerously low.
I'm anemic, I take liver capsules, I'm hypothyroid an hashimotos ,blood test showed bleeding in intestines, I'm carnivore somewhat, does anyone know how to heal myself
Thanks Dr B!! Love the Redmond salt in the background! I was anemic years ago and had to eventually get iron infusions. Now I understand why the iron pills I was prescribed didn't raise my iron levels! What about liver pills to help raise iron?
For years I dealt with anemia and sometimes I thought it wasn’t a big deal until it became a big deal. Now I take iron medication every day. I make sure I eat food that has iron in it and other healthy benefits. We have to take care of our bodies we really do.
Thank you Dr berry ! I’m A vegan- Vegetarian and I am adding eggs and some fish to my diet. I was diagnosed with severe anemia. I supplement with iron tablets, but they don’t seem to help and I can’t tolerate the stomach side effects from the 325 mg over-the-counter take 36 mg. Iron !
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!! DR. Berry can you expand on Ferritins that are elevated specifiaclly slightly over 1000 when youve been diagnosed with a fatty liver. I have been run through the ringer with my GI specialist and GP and I have anxiety through the roof because no one can give me a straight answer and Im scared. Thank you in advance.
Yes! For years I’ve I dealt with debilitating fatigue and found no help from doctors. Several years ago I felt like I had ‘ hit the wall ‘. I knew I needed help and instead of going to a doctor I went to a naturopath through blood tests she found I had hemochromatosis. My ferritin level was 500. For the past few years I go every few months to have blood withdrawn and have kept my ferritin level to between 70-100. I feel a lot better. Hemochromatosis is hereditary. I just found out my niece has it too. Hope this helps 😊
Isn't hair loss also a symptom of iron deficiency? I started losing my hair when I started keto and IF....im SO confused about this... I ALWAYS eat meat, If I told you it seemed to get better on Carnivore...is that possible? Is it the red meat as opposed to chicken that could have made the hairloss stop? I CANNOT figure this out for the past 4 years ...it gets better and then gets worse. It's SO depressing...please help!
@Lisa Maldonado Hair loss can be caused by numerous things.. iron deficiency, B vitamins and thyroid problems! Have you had your thyroid checked? And Also are hair does go through phases with shedding that is normal but obviously it's not normal if it's coming out in clumps.
That's why I make sure that "Home made" Liver sausage from my local butcher, has a special place in my Fridge....first item on the shelf...can't miss it.
Is liver sausage common? I have never heard of it. I can’t stand the texture of liver. But would love to try it in sausage. Did you have to ask for it??
I took lansoprazole - PPI - for 20 years. Im iron deficient for the past few years. I stopped taking PPIs about 9 months ago but my iron is still low. Ive had numerous tests to look for cancer, blood loss etc, all negative. I really appreciate the information you have provided here and will take on board all that you have said.
I didn’t turn a corner in my anemia until I started eating more red meat. I’m finally within a normal range and am still working on gaining a few more ferritin points.
@Sonja Walker have you looked at your consumption of other minerals that support iron levels like copper? I’m going to try to incorporate more copper containing foods. Check out the Mineral Fix book.
@@dionnelatham4401 check vitamins D3 always take K2 with it. Magnesium Glycinate….malate in evenings. Copper helps absorption of iron. From 1 Ken to another, Great informative video Doc. It's a shame that the risk of big pharmaceutical companies loosing money stands in the way of millions of people living a much healthier life.
This seems like a cruel trick, but...I have been iron deficient most of my life so I take ferecon or trinsicon to keep my iron levels up. I do not manufacture intrinsic factor so that is the reason for these prescriptions. Recently I went to the pharmacy and they told me none of these are presently available and I should just buy over the counter. I don't like to do that because it comes out of my pocket after I already pay an arm and a leg for insurance. Therefore I cut back on what I have left of my prescription and consequently I am deficient again. Does anybody know what happened with the drug companies to make this happen? I go to Safeway.
You know it dawned on me the other day that my mother raised me cooking in a cast iron skillet and I never had problems with my iron and then when I got older and bought regular pots and pans I started having an iron deficiency if I started cooking and cast iron again do you think that would help me?
I was severely anaemic about 5 years ago. I read up about absorption of iron and vitamin C really helps this. I made sure to eat vitamin C with every meal, whether it heme or non-heme and later discovered that I had managed to get my iron levels back to normal within 2 months which is unusual. I was scolded (that's how she came across at the time 😁) initially by my Doctor after she showed my blood test results and diagnosed me, asking how I didn't realise I was anaemic, as I was at the level that she had referred patients to hospital for blood transfusions. I had been getting on with life, and a lot of stresses for years and didn't realise I was ill until I experienced shooting pains from my left arm, through my chest to my right arm. That was when I rang to request an appointment and was given an urgent appointment, not realising that my body was giving me warning signs. I would definitely emphasise that people take vitamin C or eat meals that contain vitamin C. A really good dish that helped boost my iron levels was slow-cooked homemade chilli-con- carne, as beans contain iron, tomatoes, vitamin C, and fresh parsley, coriander and basil (which I added) also contain non-heme and vitamin C. Spices and herbs such as chilli powder also contain iron and some vitamin C. I had read on occasion that vitamin C helps combat the effects on phytic acid with regards to iron absorption. I would also say too, that if any females reading this, are experiencing heavy periods, whether lengthy or not, to request they are checked for uterine fibroid too, as they can cause unusually heavy blood flows. I had gone to a previous doctors surgery about 7 years prior to this, mentioned to a nurse that I was experiencing heavy and longer periods. I had just hit my 40's and she told me "that's normal for women in their 40s". It isn't. I had been walking around with this for some time.
I have issues absorbing iron and I eat anything and everything, when hungry, I didn’t know the vitamin C trick, did you take vitamin-C as pills or just from foods. I’ve seen doctors and it’s like opening a pandora box, they find all source of issues but I haven’t seen good results with their treatments.
@@titorj4498 Hi, Sorry, I have only just seen your question. OK, well, when I was severely anaemic, I didn't take vitamin C tablets. It was down to researching it all myself because I wanted to understand how iron absorption worked and food levels etc. I just added foods with Vitamin C. If you go online and Google e.g "vitamin C in orange" say, there are nutritional sites that give estimates of vitamin C/100g of food. You can also search "Foods high in Vitamin C" (and do this for iron too)and there are websites that throw out info. If you eat everything and anything, then you need to look closer at your diet. If you are eating, say, a lot of foods with calcium in, such as cheese, or drinking milk, or you drink a lot of tea or coffee, there are iron absorption inhibitors in these particular foods and beverages. Anything containing caffeine usually has these. I can't remember the names of them off the top of my head, at the moment. Beans are loaded with non-heme iron, especially chickpeas/garbanzo (I'm in the UK so we tend to call them chickpeas) but they also have compounds in them that can prevent iron absorption into the body, so I always include food containing Vitamin C in the meal, where I can, to help the iron levels. I was a never a big meat eater which didn't help because the body accesses heme iron much easier and doesn't need vitamin C to help that along. Even with meat, I accompany that with food containing vitamin C. There are loads of vegetables that contain Vitamin C but if you eat a lot then maybe load your plate up with those. I also cover the vegetables with Extra Virgin Olive Oil so they do not taste dry, as that is strictly non dairy. I steam the vegetables too, as this keeps the flavour in, and steamed food hold nutrients more than boiling. It's a very healthy way of cooking. You can buy cheap electric steamers as well as hob steamers, that are really easy to use. If you tend to reach for food items containing pastry, pasta /white flour - then try to cut this out too, as they block iron. There are some grains such as bulgar wheat, that contain iron, lentils contain iron. Pulses and grains that are unprocessed contain iron. There is a lot to possibly cut out or minimise with diet. When I was severely anaemic, I cut everything out that I knew obstructed iron absorption. By the way, this was while I was taking a high dosage of iron tablet but it sped the process up of getting back to normal levels extremely quickly. My GP was shocked at how quickly I had managed to get my levels back to normal. I also - on occasion ate dark chocolate - the highest cocoa percentage I could find - because I was missing the treats but I made sure not to eat loads and to eat a piece of citrus fruit before. Dark chocolate and cocoa is loaded with iron and other essential nutrients, electrolytes etc but it also contains a compound that they are still questioning might "lock" the iron in from the body, so I ALWAYS ate citrus fruit before tucking into the chocolate and I wonder whether that helped, because it definitely didn't hinder it. I hope that helps. A lot of the dark green leaved herbs contain iron too, so that is also a good way to make a meal taste more interesting but up the iron a little bit more. Another food I ate, which everybody I have told, has always turned their noses up and looked like they were going to gag at the thought of it, was oats (in porridge), not processed in any way. I would add water, would NEVER add milk, to boil them. They are high in iron, and I would either add orange pieces or sliced strawberries berries to it (for the vitamin C)... or when I had days where I felt I couldn't handle lower flavour, I would put some raspberry or strawberry jam into it and mix it in, but I would NEVER add milk. Sugar (I think brown, rather than white, but not 100% sure whether white does or not, so best look that up) is said to increase iron absorption too, but obviously don't eat too much of it - keep it to natural sugars within the fruit itself if you can most of the time. Over time, I noticed that my taste buds adapted to natural foods more anyway, and I could taste the natural sugars and flavours more intensely when I cut out added sugar from my diet. Just a side note: I have "Vitamin C and Iron" tablets now that I buy from Holland & Barrett in the UK. I always have these on standby now, for days where I realise I haven't eaten much iron high, foods. I got these because the vitamin C is combined. And I just remembered, nuts contain iron too, so if you can eat those, then add those to your diet. They are nice as snacks, and they have other health benefits - almonds and pistachios are a favourite of mine... and cashews. Also beef, pork (this also contains Vitamin D - there is research emerging now, linking low D levels to low iron levels too), liver (chicken liver is high in iron. I think that it might be that pork is higher too. There's two particular livers that are loaded with iron but you have to be careful to not eat too much due to the Vitamin A levels in it as it can be dangerous eating too much vitamin A), chicken (especially thigh meat), eggs, although the white contains an iron inhibitor, so best to eat vitamin C food to accompany this - watercress and rocket/arugula with poached egg is really tasty with some lemon (add a slice to the) water, seafood & fish contains Iron.
@@happyhands117 don’t worry, and thank you so much for taking the time and explaining and all important info, I really appreciate. I like eating nuts and almonds all the time. Thanks 🙏.
@@happyhands117 thank you for this vast and useful information. I have been struggling with iron deficiencies for years and my hair has thinned out drastically because of it.
My wife is FNP and sees lots of copper overload too. Sugar and HFCS deplete liver of vit A, copper to make cerulplasm so body can’t carry copper safely. Iron then creates massive oxidation. Immune system is lowered as it is copper dependent. Bee pollen and beef liver are also great copper sources with co factors.
Sure would have been nice if all the doctors I saw during my iron deficiency anemia had explained this. My guess is they weren’t listening to me when I told them I was eating 3 pounds of ice daily. All the doctors advised me to take iron supplements and didn’t recommend iron found in foods. My primary doctor prescribed Prevacid for me which made my anemia worse and I gained 25 pounds while taking this drug. After having 10 sessions of iron infusions and dumping all my doctors, I discovered keto/IF on my own and lost 100 pounds improved my GERD and feel great. Thanks Dr. Berry for all your great information. You are saving and improving people’s lives. ❤️❤️❤️
Do you still eat ice? I struggle with anemia but I enjoy the ice. I’ve been eating carnivore (only a couple weeks) and realized I think my iron is low again. I drink a lot of tea and wonder if that is sabotaging all my efforts. I crave ice so ever giving it up feels like a lost battle. It’s more like an addiction. I can stop. I don’t want to stop. I need some hope here…
I have been diagnosed with IDA and had several iron infusions and 1 unit of blood transfusion in the last 3 months but I have never had pica. I eat meat, eggs, oily fish, spinach & other green leafy veg & broccoli and they tend to be organic because I can't tolerate chemical additives or processed foods. The only thing I don't eat is liver and other organ meats because I really can't stand the taste or texture. The doctors have no idea what is causing the IDA, as they say I am eating all the right foods. I have to have an endoscopy & colonscopy in April to see if I am bleeding somewhere inside without knowing it. Are there any other non-typical causes of IDA because I have a tendency to get whatever is non-typical and the last thing they consider because only 1 or 2 people on the planet get it! If Dr Berry, or anyone else reading this, has any clues we can pursue as to what might be causing the IDA, please let me know. Thank you
CKD lack of EPO to make rbc; inflammation induced hepcidin locking all iron into cells (that inflammation may even be caused by too much cell iron, ‘paradoxically’); Too much blood loss from: endometriosis (internal, external, and between cycles), many drugs irritating GI lining causing bleeding, helminth infections. Vitamin D and curcumin reduce hepcidin. Melatonin reduces inflammation IL6 which drives hepcidin, so it could lower hepcidin. Trying some megadoses right now of 180mg, purportedly no side effects. Edit: did try the melatonin, no physiological side effects but I will have to drop it, it’s dangerous for me. Already noticed this a few days ago on a normal dose. Messes with my psyche.
The doctor told no lies. I had a blood transfusion January 2019. I am pernicious anemic. You are always tired, at times feel dizzy, and may lose hair. I never took it serious until after my blood transfusion. Food’s definitely helped with my intake.

The term "therapeutic meat" is covertly powerful. Language and terminology hold so many people captive from living healthy lives, namely those who choose not to consume "soft fluffy animals". Great presentation.
you can choose to eat meat e.g a grass fed cow which will feed a hell of a lot of people, or you can choose to eat vegan crops and be solely responsible for hundreds or even thousands of animals dying just to grow your individual diet alone.
@wnc817 Thats exactly right. 2-3 years is a pretty decent long life by cows standards, eating grass, drinking water and looking around, maybe having a bit of sex and having a baby too. They also come out almost fully grown. People compare them to human standards where our stimulus level is 10000x that of a cow, we arent even fully grown for 21+ years. Im sure that the strong majority of living creatures given a choice would rather live for a few years than not at all, but thats a typical modern day way of thinking, doing what feels right but being ignorant to all the people it negatively impacts.
So dr berry I've got colorectal cancer my tumor sits lower on my rectum. Causing hemorrhoids and pain from itching and burning .I'm currently taking radiation and chemo simultaneously. Dr thinks I'm bleeding from my tumor and says my levels of hemoglobin is very low. Can I take things to help combat this loss of blood though food and or supplementation????like I currently bought the s.s.s. tonic liquid iron and b vitamins concentrate. Can I use this to help raise my hemoglobin levels???Because I've already had one blood transfusion so far and I'm tired of being stuck with needles 👎😪
Have You heard of anyone fainting because, of their iron being low? Every now and I get I get super hot and bothered, my heart will start beating and ill pass out.
Yes that can have everything to do with low iron. I’ve been so weak due to anemia in the past and had to receive two blood transfusions. Please go get yourself checked. ❤️
I was having problems with dizziness. Got my blood checked and my red blood cells were under the normal range. I looked it up and read that i need more iron to produce the rbcs. So yes you can faint from low iron. Another cause could be low vitamin b 12.
Yep. I've had 7 blood transfusions. I completely passed out and fell down the stairs and had to be carried out by ambulance because of loss of too much blood and iron. It's no joke.
Can teeth clenching be caused by iron deficiency. My doctor did a blood test said my iron was low take some every day . She wouldn't answer my questions.
Another video was saying if you chew ice it's a sign of low iron, maybe you grinding your teeth, or clenching your teeth at night it's kind of like the same thing. I don't know. I would ask that specific question in RU-vid and make sure you're following lots of natural doctors. Consider looking up Dr. Berg. I am new to this guy just starting to listen to his stuff too
I know this is an old video but can anyone tell me roughly how long it takes to up iron levels on carnivore diet? I’ve started the diet but am still running to the freezer to grab frozen raspberries 😐
Bingo! Ding ding ding! Mystery solved. Thank you, Dr. Berry. I've been chewing on ice for months and while I recognized it was anemia. I thought I just wasn't eating enough iron. After listening to your video, I think it's the proton pump inhibitors! I've been weaning myself off of them (thanks to your ACV video) but I've been on them for years. I've had gastritis at times and never thought I could do it, but I'm almost there. My kidneys thank you. I'm also getting back to a ketogenic diet again after being off of it for about a year. Thank you for doing these videos.
My hubby had a iron level of 7 mcg and 2ng of ferritin and a hemoglobin level of 4 no doctor told him what to eat just gave him iron pills i researched foods high in iron and the difference between heme and non heme . Wr just killed a hog so i fixed him the kidney heart and liver and made a mousse from it and he has been eating it . Plus steak, and other meats but mostly liver we go back next month to get his levels checked but he feels a ton better already.
My iron was always “fine” even tho I was exhausted Checked my ferritin FINALLY, guess what? All those decades being told I’m fine! It was at 11 before I found out about lactoferrin. Miracle supplement.
@@alesiadwyer was using Jarrow IronSorb with lactoferrin They quit making it Now I have to buy the lactoferrin separately, just ordered some (Jarrow again) so I’ll see how it works. I don’t take it much more than a bottle a yr as I have no way to get tested now so I don’t want to take iron if I don’t need it. That’s bad to be high in iron also! If you have ins so u can be monitored you’ll be fine.
Blackstrap molasses is a fantastic source of non animal iron (a single tablespoon has almost as much iron as 100g of beef) and it's well absorbed because of the other nutrients in it (as high as 85% 😮) and it's cheap.
@@elvisedimo5694 I'm not worried about low carb and eat almost no processed food with added sugar. The sugar in a spoon of molasses is a MUCH smaller concern to me than my iron levels. Other people's mileage may vary depending on their personal concerns and priorities.
Dr. Barry, I am so glad I watched your video. I had a food sensitivity test done about a month ago and went on a restricted diet and I have been eating A LOT of meat. I got my ferritin tested yesterday and it went from 18 to 38 in a month. This never happens to me unless I get iron infusions. I also stopped drinking coffee and chocolate. I’ve gone legume, seed and nut free. I was so happy to see my ferritin levels improving through diet. I’ve been deficient for many years. I’ve had numerous tests and nothing has worked until now. I realize how little meat I used to eat before. Now I’m starting to eat chicken liver! Thanks for your videos!
Wow Dr. Berry! This was a good one. I have become anemic every time I’ve tried to go completely vegan or vegetarian. Most recently, Dr.’s couldn’t “Figure out” why I was losing my hair, except for that my iron stores were low, etc. Now I know why, and what to do about it. It’s a wake up call, thanks so much!
I was told that some plants have the capacity to bind to iron and prevent its absorption. Do you know if this is true and if so which plants should we avoid.
Anything with phytic acid reduces the amount of iron absorbable. Off the top of my head, avoid beans unless you find a way to prepare them that will reduce the amount of phytic acid. Also nuts tend to be high in phytic acid. Usually eating iron rich foods should be done away from other foods/drinks that block absorption e.g. drinks with tannins and coffee
Could Pica also be considered the overwhelming desire to eat ice cream?... there is ice in ice cream afterall.🙈😅 I was diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia post partum. But I have a hunch I've suffered with anemia since I was a kid because these symptoms have been around forever for me.
I was a carnivore for over a year and suddenly saw my blood protein level drop below normal. This was simultaneously happening during Keytruda infusions. I was warned my thyroid would be destroyed but nothing was said about my pancreas. Since digestive enzymes are made in the pancreas, I corrected my protein level as well as RBC, hemoglobin and hematocrit levels by taking the enzymes. 🎉😊🎉👍🥩🥓🥚
I have ulcerative colitis. This video was very important for me and my wellbeing. When I'm flaring I become anaemic. If you ever did an in-depth video about ulcerative colitis in the near future I would be eternally grateful like those aliens from Toy Story. Thanks Ken.
Carbs, seed oils, grains, pasta, sugar, rice .. Get these out if your diet. And if that's not working: go carnivore at least until you're healed and off of medication. In time you could add in some other foods, like veggies, see how your body reacts. That's dr. Berry's message, and it works!
@@MrsSmith-ti2gn Many video's. I can't paste links here but maybe do a youtube search on "Ken Berry What is the Ketogenic Diet? (Basic Concepts Simply Discussed) - 2021"
i too suffer from Colitis and it's been a really rough journey. I hope you're still staying afloat and i hope you've seen some change in your life. I'm still tryna figure shyt out and i've been diagnosed for 4 years now. This Dr. has been more informative than any GI i've had in the past. Peace be with you!
