Yep! It's what opera singers call "park and bark" or "plant your feet and bloom". This song requires incredible breath support to sing this well. And, of course, he nails it!
So rare to see a song that TRULY pushes Bruce to his limits. He stood eyes closed in a power stance the entire 8 minutes and fucking destroyed it! My respect for Maiden lies in not only their talent but the fact that they continue to push themselves when they don't have to. As a fan I've never felt cheated by Maiden. Absolutely incredible song!
GarysEgo so true, and that´s the reason to their incredible greatness....theese guys are always looking for new musical borders to cross, and they do, every single time !!
SO BADASS. You can tell how challenging that song was for Bruce because he didn't run and jump at all for the entire performance, and focused solely on singing.
Yeah, and the most unbelievable thing is he has gotten even better over the years. Everyone else gets worse. Ozzy sounds like shit now, and not to say anything bad about Dio, r.i.p. but he was not that good live in his later years. But Bruce has just improved. It's just amazing. He's the best ever hands down
@@tonyschannel2281 I have to disagree tbh, I find the album tells a nice story but understandable for anybody to say it is overrated I just dont think so I think all the dick riding maiden fans stay playing number of the beast lol my fav all time is piece of mind hby?
You can tell how difficult this song is for Bruce. He never leaves his power stance or opens his eyes. That being said, he crushes it better than the studio version. He has nothing to prove and neither does the band, but still in their 50’s and now 60’s they still perform their most difficult songs flawlessly. This band is on another stratosphere and we are lucky to have them. Up the irons!
Everytime that someone bitches about Gers being in the band, I just remind myself that he composed songs such as this one, Ghost of the Navigator, Dream of Mirrors, Lord of the Flies...
Matteo Dessilani, You are absolutely right....He has also written masterpieces like Ghost of the navigator, Dance of death, Book of souls, Lord of the flies, Dream of mirrors and so on .......
Bruce performance is beyond me. Power stance, dedicated for his audience. Powerful vocals and amazing performance by the band. Iron Maiden is the best band in the universe. Period! Stunning!
I have nothing else to say but, THANKS to mister Janick Gers for writing and mister Bruce Dickinson and rest of the band for delivering us this masterpiece. UP THE IRONS !
02:38 It must be impossible for Bruce's bandmates not go crazy as he starts singing the fastest part after that long and calm intro. His voice really provokes a reaction in everyone. So powerfull and dramatic. I remember when he sang this song in the gig I attended to. Bruce was flawless and so was the whole band.
Holy shit Bruce smashes this. The song seems so difficult to song and he absolutely nails it. Maiden are one of the best bands ever for me no question.
deathguitrst Gods, specifically those of Metal, are not affected by cancer. Oh wait... Lemmy and Dio... Well, Death only then decided to tell them they're dead. 'Twas too scared.
I always loved Adrian's compositions the most. But what a number by Janick Gers here. This track is a monster of a song. Gives chills on my neck all the way thru.
J Mastodon That´s exactly what I´ve been saying all along, if Janick composes a song, there´s always something exciting and unique ....He´s a fantastic songwriter....
Masterpiece. And Bruce's live performance is godly. That guy is one of the best singers on the planet, if not the best. He was 53 here, but age does not matter with Bruce, it seems.
Nothing says this song pushes bruce to the limit quite like him standing in one spot eyes closed for the majority of 8 minutes. An incredible performance by, all of maiden obviously, but Bruce in particular. He plants himself to the stage and gives every single ounce of what he can in this song and its so rare to see a song stop him in his tracks like that. I remember seeing them in Sheffield, UK, on this tour and he blew me away with this song. And he did an entire tour singing it. Most people would struggle singing the first high pitched verse but he knocks the song out of the park show after show. What an incredible singer
I love that even though bruce isn’t running around because this is such a difficult song for him, he still puts some character into it by swaying from side to side as if he’s caught in the storm
Can't help notice that when Maiden plays for a Latin American audience - whether that is in Chile, Mexico or Brazil - something magical happens between the band and the crowd. The love of the audience inspires the band to its best performances. And rightly so. Never seen fans so passionate. Muchas gracias a todos / obrigado!
this is what you get when Mr Janick Gers writes a song, fantastic songwriter, this guy is a fucking genius, complex songwriting, epic and lot of melodies, keeping maiden marching the way it should be. Musically speaking this is probably Maiden's best stage performance, no doubt about it.
I don't think a lot of people realize how difficult it is to sing songs like this. These sort of songs are far more difficult than opera. The tempo is faster, the notes are higher and more frequent, this is seriously advanced singing.
I think the song "The Chase" with Dio and Tate has greater complexity and more rhythmic intensity, especially Dio's vocals, which manages to reach the lowest notes with greater depth and hitting several D5s in a legato sequence while maintaining a long phrasing. , and the song is louder overall, I think Tate himself talked about this in an interview about the difficulty of singing the high note progressions of that song, so much so that no one has even done a decent cover on the same level as that performance.
@@luamoliveira3467 I don’t agree at all. That song doesn’t require nearly as much stamina or range as The Talisman. I’m not saying Dio isn’t as good as Bruce, or that Dio couldn’t sing The Talisman, but I fail to see how The Chase is one of Dios better vocal performances. Now if you said Stargazer I’d have had a hard time arguing against that.
@@moderndayheretic I understand you but The Chase does depend on a lot of resistance, especially because many metal singers cannot maintain the stability of their phrasing as a good legato sequence with the same ease and are constantly stabbing their phrasing, especially when they are singing intensely like this one music, the sequence of words with those D5 that he sustains without breaking the phrasing and with that fabulous control in full chest voice, is a challenge and the glottal effort can be greater to sing in this region and even the level of muscular fatigue is bigger, precisely because the majority will sing this song in the oropharyngeal region within a strong balanced mix with head predominance, with that same subglottic head voice pressure as a natural subterfuge to sustain the notes and which makes it easier as Bruce started clearly to do after the age of 50 with some more operatic techniques, I see this all the time when these people are trying to do a decent cover of Dio's songs, when it doesn't sound too forced, they usually sound screamed or shrill with a certain rhythmic intensity in the progression of higher notes and does not have the same naturalness and the larynx completely free of muscular tension as Dio performs in his performances; the only difference is that the percussion in the song "The Talisman" is longer in general and the impression will really be as you said, more logically that Ronnie has more difficult performances than in "The Chase"; And I can mention both Stargazer as an example, as well as his live performances of Mistreated in Chicago 1978 or Heaven and Hell and Stand up the shout in Manchester 1983; I think that when you try to sing Dio or Jussi Bijörling at the Opera, it is one of the most difficult tasks in my opinion. As an example, I remember that end of Ronnie's show in Belgium in 2000, where Dio and Bruce Dickinson in those performances of Rainbow in the dark and Long live rock in roll perform together, Bruce didn't adapt perfectly to those songs at that moment in the show, and Right away I realized the difficulties he was having in maintaining the stability of his voice, and so he chose to try a higher harmony than Dio's voice and some improvisations, which didn't really work in my opinion, as he maintained a third voice at certain times but it sounded too shrill, the larynx was too high and he released a certain amount of air from his throat which made him lose some natural control of his voice; maiden fans said that the song was made for Ronnie's original tone and noticed that he was having difficulties, he was great but it was obvious that it was not an easy song to sing, as it required many long legato sequences in very high regions acute.
@@luamoliveira3467 I’m not even going to pretend I’m anywhere near as much of an expert as you so let me just ask you this. Have you ever listened to the isolated vocal tracks of Flight of Icarus, Book of Soils, and Where Eagles Dare? I’d like to know an experts opinion on the vocals on those tracks and if you think that Bruce demonstrates similar skill level to Dio.
@@moderndayheretic It is one of Bruce's most difficult performances, I think there is any similarity technically between him and Ronnie but them are diferent, he is one of the best vocalists and with a great range as we know, excellent consistency live and with a great command of full belting in voice mixed chest voice (especially at his peak, where he used more chest voice when he was young), Bruce has a very characteristic vibrato, very precise and with a very operatic aesthetic and he always maintained excellent control over his trebles and just like him he also has excellent technique in general; Regarding Ronnie, he was an absolutely virtuoso singer without a doubt and that's why he is being so praised by great singing teachers out there and even operatic singing teachers like Elizabeth Zharoff, Beth Roars and Zach Ansley for example, who They have even stated a few times that he would be in their Top 3 of the best singers of all time along with Pavarotti and Caruso (even though there is that resistance on their part with Heavy Metal singers, Bruce is also highly praised, as is Halford himself), because Dio has an extremely natural way of singing, practically effortless throughout his vocal range and without any noticeable facial and throat muscle tension over years of his professional career (I note that with the exception of some opera singers, many singers that I hear live, have some necessary muscular tension and that is something normal, but Dio had no tension at all and this influences a type of sustainability and a very great vocal consistency and stability over the years) he is quite technically proficient( Perhaps he is the best voice manipulator I have ever heard and one of the rare singers with total command of his vocal instrument, you can tell by the way he very easily manipulates intonation to create that entire fabulous spectrum of varied vocal color effects in his performances and this allowed Dio to create many different melodic designs in a single song in each show); As Ken Tamplin and Zach Ansley themselves had already mentioned, Dio managed to create great resistance and a very high level of glottal compression through the perfect muscular domain of the modern open throat technique and in a very advanced way (a structural technique that found within the appogio in Bel Canto), his diaphragmatic support was fantastic and he managed to develop a lot of motor strength, a very solid muscular structure of his vocal mechanism with years of practice, so you realize that through this process, Dio was able to sing most of of time with a full chest voice in a very controlled and natural way( we know the enormous difficulty in singing with a full chest voice in a natural way and especially with the frequent use of harmonic distortion, you could see how he could hit those vowels completely open ones in many moments and as the texture of his resonance did not change as we see in a mixed voice), but he sounded quite relaxed live despite the risks that this could cause in terms of muscular friction in the long term, because it also depends in part on genetic mechanics of the singer and also of the solid muscular structure that is very well developed to be able to sing at that rhythmic intensity throughout an entire performance without showing signs of muscular fatigue, and in this context Ken Tamplin has already stated why many cannot emulate with any perfection the vocals of Dio singing his songs and because many of them sound too strident, because in addition to all this context regarding the extreme mastery he had of the mechanism, Dio also used a lot of glottic compression and a lot of diaphragmatic support to maintain his stability on those performances.
Milos Milosavljevic Yes exactly! he sounds WAY better live on all the newer tracks, I'm thinking it's the way they produce and mix it or something as well since on the last few of albums since Dance of Death he sounds "dry" and slightly thin but will sound full with way more power live!
IneedFran Sometimes Bruce has a sore throat, or a cold. Or he's just tired. And he doesn't sound the way he usually do. But, when he is healty and not tired, he just rocks. Maiden is strong in all points. Not just Bruce, but all other members. In studio versions, everything is surgicaly precise. And somehow sterile, to certain extent. But, in live versions, when they start playing, passionally and with love, then you hear and see magic. I prefer live version of The Mercenary, for instance. Much better than studio. Also, Wasting love, Fear of the dark, Blood brothers, Sign of the cross, The Clansman, Wicker man... You name it. They just love music and heavy metal and give all they have on stage. That's why I love them. Cheers!
Milos Milosavljevic As he aged, his voice has definitely suffered. But on this particular song and on this particular concert, he sounds as if he was 25 again.
Pedro Calmon His voice has not faded..He just CHOOSES to sing diffrently since he stoped screaming after powerslave .. ( he went back to it for NPFTD) And has done a few songs in his older style in recent albums
I'd rate When the Wild Wind Blows a perfect 10/10, The Talisman 9/10 or 9.5/10, and Starblind 7.5/10 or 8/10. When the Wild Wind Blows is certainly the best, followed by The Talisman. As for the third spot, I'm not sure if I would choose Starblind, as El Dorado and Mother of Mercy are also really good.
interesting ranking. to me it would be: 1. The Talisman 10/10 2. When the Wild Wind Blows 9/10 3. Starblind 9/10 I put The Talisman above the rest because the lyrics are so well written, and Bruce's voice just sounds majestic, so raw and powerful. but yeah, the whole album is pretty damn good.
Gino Fáctàp so we do agree, you put the Talisman at the top....I love the entire album ( almost ) but that´s a really an obsessive song....thank you !!
Bruce... what a fucking legend. Look at that bloody man, 53 years or so in this clip, singing better than in the 80's "golden age", rocking out in full blown awesomeness almost constantly for almost a full nine minutes. NINE MINUTES, any heavier singer will tell you that's a feat in itself. Hats off to one of the best singers of our time!
+RyanThompsonGuitarist you don't know if he had any lessons or not. I've heard he was trained to sing opera which helped him alot in his breathe control and security in higher notes. He probably started of as a very talented man, but over the years, with so much gigs and concerts, there is a tiny possibility that he managed to keep his voice in shape without anyone showing him how. When you think of Live after death tour, it was, perhaps, the most difficult tour for him and his voice which can be heard on some of the tapes, but after that, the voice had to be retracted, taken care of and oiled up again for the next stages. It is not shame to took lessons. I think, for someone that holds up milions of fans, that it's a shame not to take care of your voice and being able to entertain for many years after.
+Skendrović Nikola in a recent interview, he said he would go along to a vocal class, following his recent cancer battle. He then said 'I've never had a vocal lesson, so I might learn something'
My love and admiration for Janick Gers is from here to eternity....He´s incredible, in every sense of the word, an essential asset to the band, and when he writes a song, you know it will be phenomenal, punchy and downright epic....his musical capabilities are truly overwhelming !!!
I completely agree with you. It really pisses me off when I go online and see people in the comments section slagging him off saying they should get rid of him or he ruined maiden and whatever else. He is a song writing genius only second to Steve Harris out of these 6. I've had the pleasure of meeting him and he is honestly one of the most humble and down to earth guys you could hope to meet. Someone you could easily sit down with at a pub drinking a few pints and chatting with. Here's to many more years of Janick being crucial to the band
I completely agree with you. He's a phenomenal guitarist and songwriter, and a crucial part of Iron Maiden. That and he's a beautiful person inside and out...
The best band ever in my opinion. To keep improving like they have over the years , is amazing to see. The stuff they are releasing at 60 + years of age puts so many bands to shame. Up the irons!
This is f.....g masterpiece.... I dont know how much time i replay this ... And how much i will in future. Great song, great studio version, but this LIVE masterpiece.... Is another level. How.... For God sake ... HOW YOU CAN SING LIKE THIS??! Entire this concert is probably one of best in history, and this song is at top of concert for me. Crowd did'nt buy ticket only for show, they buy ticket for history. And when you see that crowd, one is sure, they deserve that! Thanks for this, crowd, Irons, and YT!!
Honestly, I don´t think theese guys plays rock or metal anymore...They have taken music to a completely different level, they produce music from beyond the boundries of music...Theese guys performs MAGIC on stage and the epicness is beyond belief...They have simply a genre of their own, the true metal ICONS, Iron Maiden, comparable to none !!!
What I love about them is that the core of the band is a bassist and not only the bass volume is loud the bass line are too beautiful , it is very much hearable even though there are 3 guitarists doing their own magic , love steve
I love the way Bruce performs here. He rocks back and forth when he sings as if he was stuck on a ship out in the middle of a raging storm. Nice touch.
Bruce is one of a kind, most of his singing is in full voice as opposed to falsetto (most metal singers use falsetto to hit higher notes), to be able to employ a range like his in full voice as often as he does requires not only talent but excellent physical condition as well.
I believe he uses a mixed head voice in a lot of the higher passages. He has quite powerful 'belt muscle' (diaphragm) control in the chest voice, where 'full voice' originates but the smooth blending of chest / head voice keeps it strong and full-sounding as he moves up. Bruce's singing has always been one of the most fascinating things to me..
@@tplinkRob Halford, in his prime, could dwarf Bruce Dickenson (both literally and figuratively lol) .. especially in terms of vocal range. I think Bruce's voice has held up better over time, however. Rob (who is significantly older than Bruce) .. his voice has not held up quite as well i.m.o. Im not saying one vocalist is better than the other (in fact, Maiden is my favorite band) .. but Halford, in his prime, was unmatched in terms of (non-falsetto) vocal range.
@@BrotherMan321 Rob may have been more rangey but personally the power Bruce held in back on the day was unrivalled. That broad vibrato with pure projection just wasn’t matched.
Ciao blood bro/sis. I was lucky enough to have seen them performing in 6 live, the last one was on 2022 summer. They are incredible live. A lot of songs are best than the studio ones. Bruce vocal are HUGE, he' s a living legend, just like all bembers as great musicians. I really do love Mr. Dave Murray. His iconic riff and solos guitar melt my soul and give me goosebumps, every fuc*ing time . I wish you could go to their live. Greetings from Italy, Rock on 🤘🏻💜🔥
Eddie Torrez I´ve been trying to buy a ticket to anywhere in UK for their latest tour, but every single concert was sold out, so people obviously love their music....
Whenever I go on the comment section of an Iron Maiden video, I feel the love. Bruce surpassed himself on this one, one of his best performances. I am listening to this while being confined and high, makes it even better. Up the irons!
WOW, I´m lost for words....this gentle intro, explosion, story revealing, tension, anticipation, slowly diminishing.....and their performance with charisma and stage presence unmatched....Iron Maiden rises the song to the heights of magic, and they are sooo in a league of their own....
For me Bruce is the best I don't care what anyone says. People will nitpick at his vocal abilities and say someone else is better but regardless - nobody - in metal front man brings music to life the way he can and that's what matters most.
How the fuck can a band make great songs in the past, like Wasted Years or Hallowed Be Thy Name, like 20 years ago, and today, make FUCKING HYMNS like this???!! Only Iron Maiden can do that!
If Estadio Nacional had a roof it would have needed a new one after this. THEY. FUCKING. DESTROYED. IT. One of, if not the greatest, nine minutes ever recorded.
Lyrics When I stand and look about the port And contemplate my life, will I ever see my countrymen again? As the captain calls us on the deck, I take my things and walk To the harbor side I glance back one last time Fleeing our nation, our problems we leave behind Ships by the tenfold sail out on the tide We are pleased to be out and embracing the open sea Free from our troubles and more free from thee Inheritors unfulfilled reason behind us We flee from what is not, what is will be We flee the earth and face our harsh reality Will death be low mist that hangs on the sea? We run from the evil tongues, rash judgments, selfish men Never to be seen on these shores again As we sail into ocean size and lose sight of land A face of contentment around in the air We're off now to seek all our fortunes To the land of our dreams Riding the waves and the storm is upon us The winds lash the sails but the ropes keep them tight Off in the distance a dark cloud approaching None could imagine what there was to come No, there's no one going back, no, there's not a second chance As we strap onto the side, we pray to God that we won't die As we ride the rough seas, as we soak from the ocean waves I just hope for all our lives and pray that I survive Four ships are lost in the stormy conditions The spirits of the sunken crews, their phantoms follow us Spirits, sails, they drive us on through the all consuming waves Cold mortality, no weapon against these ever raging seas Four leagues and ten and we hit storms again We just can't get away from the eye of the storm The birds out soar the raging storm but we cannot escape it Abandoned earth that we now crave is many leagues from safe Holding on for our dear lives and we're praying once again Rotten luck or just jonahed? The talisman is in my hand Limbs fatigued, trembling with cold, blinded from the sea spray salt Clasping anything we can hold, heaven's rain upon us falls Twenty days without a meal and ten without fresh water still Those that didn't die in storms, the scurvy rest did slaughter Westward the tide, westward we sail on Westward the tide, sail by the talisman We approach the other side of the ocean with the tide In our favor just for once, welcome greeting, our new land The elation in our hearts, the excitement in our veins As we sail towards the coastline of our golden promised land Weary limbs fatigued away, I have no life left in me No more strength and nothing left to give, must find the will to live Never thought that we could make it, truly sight of shores divine The sickness I am dying from, never wanted it to end this way Westward the tide, westward we sail on Westward the tide, sail by the talisman Westward the tide, westward we sail on Westward the tide, sail by the talisman
This will be the one played when Maiden's gone. Totally astonishing. I have sometimes cried while listening to this while driving my way to work. And what has Bruce said - Helsinki is the fucking capital of heavy metal. Greetings from Finland!!!
Cor Tadew Not sure about technicalities but love both, of course uÇI have the pleasure of seeing Maiden Live and will do next and next ;), thing that didn´t happened with Queen.
These men have nothing more to prove at this point. I cannot find a weak tune by them. They're flawless. The best metal band ever followed by Megadeth.
Benjamin Breeg theese amazing guys has indeed nothing more to prove, but with every new album or show, they are outdoing themselves, like this latest album, after forty years they released Book of Souls, an outstanding album !!
Bruce's otherworldly vocal performance takes all the compliments, but let's not ignore the amazing bass and drumming, that combination is a thing of beauty.
IMMORTAL MASTERPIECE !!! This gentle slow intro, the guitar harmonies, the exploding escalating rythms, brilliant lyrics, bass line, drums and the masterly interpretation by Bruce takes you beyond euphoria, FAR beyond....Magnificent and utter genius, all around !!!!
You know, from time to time I come here to see this live performance and every time I watched it I wanted to show it to everyone I know. It is just perfect and unreal. Theres hundreds of phenomenal Maiden performances out there on YT, this is just the best one, period.
This totally BLOWS ME AWAY..........Awesome, just awesome....Theese guys not perform, they live it....Just love IRON MAIDEN, and a very honest THANK YOU JANICK........
Does somebody know this feeling that is beyond loving a band? It is not like a crazy teenager collapsing on a take that concert, it is a feeling of charging your mental power, the will to live, and the feeling of something that carries you, no matter how sad or hard your day is.
ICONIC, MAGNIFICENT, OUTSTANDING isn´t really enough anymore...the EPICNESS is unreal, and if ANYONE ever left a legacy it will be the true metal ICONS Iron Maiden, comparable and second to none........
UNIQUE and Utterly GENIUS....an absolutely hypnotizing masterpiece, slow gentle intro, epic build up, EXPLODING crescendo, the only proof you´ll ever need, if ANYONE ever left a legacy it will be the true metal ICONS Iron Maiden, comparable to none, absolutely none.....
Jesus Christ I fucking love this song SO MUCH!! This is my fav song off final frontier cos this more than any other song they've done on their last few albums shows that they can still capture the same energy and fire that they had (and still have) in songs such as invaders and aces high. This live version is fucking incredible!! A beautiful acoustic intro sets the scene with some poetic lyrics sung flawlessly by Bruce, then the acoustics fade away and then...BANG!! They just fucking bring it, hitting you in the balls and not letting up for one millisecond, breakneck riffs and thundering bass by Steve and the three amigos, insane drumming from Nicko and soaring vocals by Bruce, reminding you why they call him "air raid siren"!! Other music may come and go over the years (and to be fair I have heard some great new bands lately) but for me, this Just never gets old, from the second that it kicks in after the acoustic intro, its nothing but pure, unadulterated, world owning EPICNESS!!!!!!! UP THE IRONS!!!
Daniel McDonald you sir, are correct, in every sense of the word !! When Janick writes a song, it´s always exciting, passionate and genious, and he also gives everyone a chance to shine.....he´s simply an outstanding composer !!!
