If you don't have rusty stuff, when I first started my iron water, I just put store bought steel wool with water and vinegar and it made great iron water ive used ever since, just adding to it

Hi Laura, thanks for sharing! Also wondering about something to discuss here with you. As the main ingredient of iron mordant is ferric oxide, could you just mix the ferric oxide powder into water and mix it with some vinegars together to get the same thing?

I'm in the dark green stage, though I've been here for several weeks. Going to try agitating it more, as I've pretty much just been letting it sit. If anyone has other recommendations, I'd love to hear them! Thank you for the video, Laura. Great info here.

Be careful if you're using unknown things green can be a sign of lead if it's quite blue green. Or copper. And it's good to be sure of the object you use in case it is lead. You can buy a pen in hardware stores thst tests it if you're not. Sure.

my dad recently left some rusty tools in a bucket of water for a week without a lid, as the items wouldn’t fit in a jar, the water has gone orange but is still a little transparent. If i decant my orange water into jars and add the vinegar after would the solution still work or do the items need to be in a sealed jar with the vinegar from the start of the process? lovely channel by the way x

Is there a minimum percentage for vinegar acidity to create a nice print or just a vinegar with any percentge or acid?

Thanks for sharing this. I want to try it, but I have nothing that's rusty. I know some people who might, though. So I'll ask them if they want to get rid of them so that I can try this.

Hi Laura, is it safe to wear a tshirt made with eco print with a mordant of iron solution? Is it safe to our skin? Even after you wash it with detergent? Thanks!

I know I’m a bit late to the diy dye party, but I’ve been thinking lately about possible dye sources. Maybe you’ve tried them already, maybe not, but just throwing out some ideas: raspberries, citrus peels/fruits, cranberries, beets will surely do something, red clay dirt (I’ve definitely accidentally stained some jeans with that before), sunflower petals, iris flowers, fruit juices, powdered drink mixes like Kool-Aid. Have you experimented with any of those before? How did they work out?
@eugenetswong

Don't forget dandelions.
@jasminehoover5359
@jasminehoover5359 Год назад
I don't know of any of those that are colorfast, except maybe the KoolAid, as it's already made of synthetic dyes. The dirt/clay works sometimes, depending on the composition and the mordanting etc that you use. It's called a "dirt shirt", if you wanna look it up. Lots of things make colors initially, but not everything makes colors that will last

And I guess you can get black/ purple/gret from the right sunflowers, but the seeds

Hey Laura, I have some rust that my dad collected for me a while ago (To be honest, I am not sure why anymore. I have WAY too many projects.) But do you think that I could just mix the rust into the vinegar and water and let it sit?
@LastMinuteLaura
@LastMinuteLaura 4 года назад
yes I think so Bee. I just use rusty items, so it should work!
@serendipidus8482
@serendipidus8482 Месяц назад
Your day collected rust? Thays cool. Be careful if you don't know what the objects were because some things have lead in them and be careful not to inhale any dust. Or get any near your eyes.

So I've made my iron water about a week ago. Used it today and it really works at darkening some fabric I had previously dyed with avocado skins. Is it normal for the rust water to smell really strong???? It stinks! Will that smell stay on the fabric? How do I get the smell out?
@LastMinuteLaura
@LastMinuteLaura 4 года назад
It definitely has a funky smell. It won't stitch in the yarn once rinsed out. If you have a lingering smell, I would soak your yarn in a gentle soap or wool wash , or even fill up a sink with warm water and drop in a drop or two of essential oils. I will often mix a little hair conditioner with a big sink full o warm water. That softens the wool, and adds a nice smell. With fabric, same thing, but nix the wool wash. Good luck!

So question... once you dye your yarn do you then make a separate iron bath? Or do you mix the iron in the existing dye bat? 🤔I’ve made some iron mordant a few months ago, but I’m afraid to use it wrong. 🤦🏻‍♀️
@LastMinuteLaura
@LastMinuteLaura 4 года назад
You can do it either way! Try both! I have done a premordant with iron, a dye bath with iron in it, and a post dye iron bath. All three gave some beautiful results. TRY THEM ALL!!!! :) :) :) P.S. thanks for watching Liz!
@lizlaurichesse9056

If you use it first you will see the colour develop if you use it after it will change the colour and you can do both too... if you do it first then decide its not dark enough you can also add it as a modifier. You can use alum as the mordant and iron as the modifier too.

How to use the Aluminum Sulfate?
@serendipidus8482
@serendipidus8482 Месяц назад
Mix with water soak fabric or spray on paper let it dry. Or not. Different strengths are used for different fabrics and it doesnt work on all.

Could you just use non rusted items and leave them in solution until they start rusting?
@LastMinuteLaura
@LastMinuteLaura 4 года назад
I mean, I guess so. But it would take much longer. I just walk a city street for a few minutes and I usually find a big handful of rusty bits! Good luck!
@tiwantiwaabibiman2603
@tiwantiwaabibiman2603 8 месяцев назад
No. The point of using already rusted iron is that it's not only makes the mordant faster you'd have to use another oxidizer to rust the iron which will take a lot longer to get a mordant. It could also impact the Eco process. We've been creating Afrikan mud clothe and other dyed textiles for centuries using iron slag. There are few contemporary cheats that work. Just stick with using rusted iron/metal pieces.

She does not show how to actually use it. That orange solution is used full strength on scoured cotton or ? If used full strength you'd think you should start a few jars all at once, yes??

Hi there. I just found your page and something in this video concerned me. All break pads have asbestos in them to make them heat resistant. I would absolutely not recommend using break pads to make mordant or anything you may put on your body. As most of us know, asbestos causes cancer and is also really bad for the environment, though it is a natural thing. But please, don't use break pads. Do your research before using anything like that please. Aside from that, thank you for the info on how to make the mordant.
@kirrageorgeson5473
@kirrageorgeson5473 Год назад
You are wrong. Asbestos has stopped being used in most new brake pads
@michelletrott1136
@michelletrott1136 Год назад
@@kirrageorgeson5473 here in Canada, they still use them. My mother is a mesothelioma cancer survivor from working in car manufacturer plants, as well as the majority of my family works in the Chrysler and Ford factories in southern Ontario. I can guarantee that there still is. Biggest company that uses them to this day is Land Rover. Please do some research. This is part of a lawsuit my mother has been involved in for years. Also, the reason why I commented was because of how the creator found said breakpad. If I'm correct, it wasn't till 2016 that asbestos removal in break pads started in the US, and they had till 2019. So if she found a pad to use that was used prior to that, it's likely dangerous.
