"A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still." Augustine, btw, when he was first saved out of Manicheism, argued FOR FREE WILL against the Manicheans, who argued for determinism. Years later, Augustine CHANGED his viewpoint and returned to a deterministic soteriology, thus re-embracing some of his Manichean views. NOBODY argued FOR DETERMINISM or COMPATIBILISM before Augustine.

By far, one of the best sermons I have heard. What you have said about regeneration by the Holy Spirit is spot on. I'll never forget when I was saved 26 years ago. How you have described it, is exactly what had happened to me. I just want you to know, that your words had a tremendous impact on my heart from the Holy Spirit just now. It's so refreshing, hearing it from someone who is truly saved. Now I fully understand, why Jesus didn't come to this world to condemn it, but to SAVE it. When one is saved, him or her will also understand, that He alone, has overcome this world as well. The two, are inseparable! Thanks again, for giving the Holy Spirit the credit that He deserves. Through Jesus Christ our Savior!

No one is coerced. You are made alive together with Christ. You are born of God, it's now your nature. You love God because it's now your nature to love God, because you are born again and indwelt by the Holy Spirit, not because you're being forced. Any other view is a high view of man, and low view of God. God is made to be less sovereign than He is, man is made to be less dead in transgressions and sins than he actually is prior to regeneration, at least that my estimation of the pre-regeneration view of faith.

It appears to all men, yes, and is available to all men, but can be rejected at an outward level. An unsaved person can see that there is something different about a person they know, they don't swear, aren't sexually immoral, have hope, etc., so they have seen it (appeared), but they reject it, because they love their sin. It's foolishness to them. This is what calvinism would call the external call. There's certainly enough there, in an obvious enough way, to hold them responsible for rejecting it, but not enough to get them to turn. The internal call is a work of The Spirit, and I would say it's 2 things at varying levels. #1-coming to a knowledge of the truth and #2 - having the love of God poured into our hearts. You can't resist it on the whole. You can resist it at a certain level, but overall, it will be effectal. The work that was started will be completed. You will eventually cooperate, little by little. It's not automatic at all. You have freewill in a way, but being as your a new creature, your nature is different than the old man, it just isn't an instant thing. The unconverted man still has the old nature, and can't understand the things of God, nor yield to them.

@@larrybedouin2921 the problem with this understanding is that I really do think you essentially do away with Romans 8:30. Those He calls, He justifies. Those He justifies, He glorifies. There is a call that is irresistible. We also know that there is a call that is restible as "Many are called but few are chosen". Both are true. There is an internal calling by the Holy Spirit that cannot be resisted. I would hold the external call that can be resisted would be along the lines of one being called to repent and believe at a Billy Graham crusade.

@@J_a_s_o_n what makes it false. The gospel is SIMPLE. To say that believing in irresistible grace is heresy is like saying that credobaptists or paedobaptists (choose the opposite of your conviction) are heretics because they're wrong on the topic of baptism.

Romans 11:25-27 - the conversion of the Jews is an example of irresistible grace; Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written, “The Deliverer will come from Zion, he will banish ungodliness from Jacob and this will be my covenant with the when I take away their sins.”

God is a God of LOVE! He would never FORCE someone to get saved. LOVE gives choices.

Unless you are not part of the Elect! God does not pick some for heaven and some for Hell, if he did then we would call it irresistible damnation

It is relevant how salvation is brought about. It's pure grace. To know that we are made alive together with Christ, even while we were dead in our trespasses, BECAUSE of the great love with which He loved us is an incredible thing to dwell on. It's grace at a level that we can hardly comprehend. Pure grace.

I do have a bit of struggle with this one sometimes. I've heard it said from some reformed people like John McArthur that God is one of divine contradictions, things we cannot explain ourselves. Is Jesus 100% man or 100% God? He's both. Who wrote Paul's letters? 100% Paul and 100% Holy Spirit. Is it not possible in the same manner, that God does 100% of salvation while allowing us to also take part?

@Ben, John MacArthur is Calvinistic....not Reformed. Yes, John has said God was fully God and fully man. He was corrected by Dr. R. C. Sproul during a Ligonier conference Q&A session. The Council of Chalcedon ( 4th century) dealt with the Arian controversy. The issue was the relationship between the divine and the human in Christ. Christ is TRULY God and TRULY man.

How can any believer who knows God's character is LOVE- Agape love, say that God chooses particular people before the beginning of the world to go to HEAVEN and others the lake of fire? This is a false religion from the devil , everyone has a chance to accept Christ Jesus as SAVIOUR.

I agree with most of this but would differ with the statement that the Gospel is used to give Spiritual life, the Spirit does that alone without means, however the Gospel is used to bring forth that Spiritual life 2 Tim 1:10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

We may thank God for teachers like Jon Moffit and Justin Perdue these days. Personally, i always resented calvinism. I hated every doctrine of it. But God has opened my eyes that it is the truth. I believe in double predestination and have the Scriptures ready incase of believers and unbelievers being predestined to the final outcome. About the believer we find this truth in Jesus His own words in the Gospel of John. John 15:16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. Also Romans gives us some clarification. Romans 8:29-30 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified. Incase of the unbeliever Peter gives us some insight that they are appointed to stumble. 1 Peter 2:7-8 Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone,” and “A stone of stumbling And a rock of offense.” They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed. The Bible speaks of believers appointed by God to salvation and unbelievers unto damnation.

The BIBLE teaches us that unless a person BELIEVE Jesus he cannot be regenerated, and Faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Rom.10:17). The Bible put it in order... 1.) Gospel 2.) Faith 3.) Regeneration In Calvinism or Reformed its-- 1.) Regeneration 2.) Faith 3.) Gospel This kind of man-made doctrine cannot be supported with Scriptures.

The double talk is cringe worthy, the clear contradiction that is simply ignored is why I believe in Free Grace, I tried to find the word Sovereignty of God and I did not find it in the Bible? Can someone check the word FREEWILL to see of it is in the Bible?

Regeneration is only found in two verse of the scriptures, and neither are used as in the man centric theology of Calvinism. Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; {Titus 3:5} And Jesus said unto them, "Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.” {Matthew 19:28}

Seems to me you understand that Calvinism (Augustinianism) was not even a real thing until 400 years after Christ. Is that correct? Obviously Augustine could not have written anything before he was born, but did his theological system from which Calvinism sprang exist in any other christian writings in the first 3 centuries?

Predestination is a good thing for those who God chooses but an absolutely horrific thing for those he doesn't. God chooses to not save people we want saved cause he wants to show he is just be punishing people. This is what you believe correct? Jacob I loved Esau I hated before they were born? My Dad believes Calvinism supports the above AND says God chooses to send some babies to heaven and some to hell because he is God and so predestination stands. Theocast is this Calvinism or just my Dad perverting it? Uh....

Calvinistic distinctions are 100% against scripture and against God. It is not a Christian doctrine at all. What you say is Pelagianism is NOT, in fact, what Pelagianism. Choosing between life or death is exactly what God says is NOT too hard or too far from us, in Deuteronomy 30. Paul calls this "the word of faith that we proclaim" in Romans 10:8. Please re-read Romans. 1 Corinthians 2:14 is not referencing unsaved people, its referencing people that are not listening to the Spirit, whether believer or unbeliever, because the secrets being revealed by the Spirit are not something that could just be figured out by thinking or even necessarily looking at prophecy. We ALL have the Holy Spirit convicting "the world of its sin, and of God's righteousness, and of the coming judgment". It is indeed God's will that chooses who He will redeem.... the will of the Father is that those who look to the son and believe will have eternal life. It is by believing that we may have life in His name. We gain access to His grace by our faith. Calvinism is a rejection of scripture. Please start with scripture, and when you get to the discussion of Calvinism, you will realize that it is not at all biblical.

@@tomtemple69 I have. It is not at all supportive of calvinism in any way. Paul's point in Romans 9 is that God the promises of God will be fulfilled, and that not all who were born of Abraham are the recipients of the promise, because it is by faith that we are able to receive the righteousness of God, not by birthright, not by inheritance, not by good works or our own striving; by faith. And God can harden those who are not following Him and use them to accomplish His plans, and He is just to do so.
