Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) | 5 Lifestyle Behaviors That Reduce Risk & Improve Symptoms
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder involving chronic and recurrent abdominal pain and changes in bowel habit. Some of the hallmark clinical features of IBS include abdominal pain that co-occurs with changes in bowel habit, which includes diarrhea, constipation or an alternating of the two. In this lesson, we discuss 5 lifestyle behaviors that reduce the risk of IBS and also (likely) improve the signs and symptoms of IBS if you already have it.

I had no risk factors, yet I have had IBS for over twenty years. Fiber makes my symptoms much worse, especially fruit. The most recommended diet for managing IBS is a low-FODMAPS diet, not the DASH diet. There are also many people who have all these risk factors and don't have IBS. IBS is a more much complex disorder than this video suggests. IBS can lead to some of the factors cited. For example, I often wake at 4 AM, because of abdominal cramping. The IBS causes my poor sleep. Also, if you have IBS with diarrhea you can have trouble exercising, because you can't be too far away far a toilet. If lifestyle were so important, there wouldn't be the strong gender disparity. Women are less likely to smoke and drink than men and I've never noticed men have healthier diets than women. Since it is more common in women, it suggests IBS may have an autoimmune component, since autoimmune disorders are more common in women.

With the DASH diet including low-fat dairy products, be careful with the amount of lactose that will certainly be too high if you are lactose intolerant as I am. Fibers increase my IBS symptoms a lot and endurance sports can also induce or increase gastrointestinal symptoms (my case as well and this issue can be found in the medical litterature).

In what world is not having insomnia a lifestyle behavior? This study is so ridiculous. Correlation does not equal causation. Generally, the causes of these “poor lifestyle behaviors” are mental illness, trauma, disability, and poverty. These are things that most people have no control over. I would absolutely love to just not have insomnia! 🙄 Exercise regimen would be better and include a lot more cardio if I didn’t have joint pain from any level of impact. I take barre classes about 3 times a week, but I am limited by my pain. My diet would be a whole lot better if I didn’t struggle so much just to feed myself because I have two different neurodevelopmental disabilities that cause severe difficulties with executive functioning. Many people with my conditions turn to alcohol and nicotine to self medicate. I guess I’m just lucky that I have a sensory aversion to smoke and my IBS flares up with just one alcoholic beverage. 🙃Good lord, at least add a disclaimer about how these “behaviors” aren’t achievable for everyone.

Gee, maybe you are an outlier? You clearly consider yourself special. Even insomnia is something that can be addressed and changed with the right motivation and information. I know this because I have done it. But, you go right ahead and continue to be negative about solutions you didn’t think of yourself, but you will not see results.

@@lynnjasen9727 well first, no, I am not an outlier. 26% of adults in the US are disabled, 20% of adults in the US have a mental illness, and 12% of Americans live below the poverty line. I am very much not special in this way. I’m just like about a quarter of the population. I do get treatment for my insomnia, but it’s in the form of a medication that I may need to take for the rest of my life. A lot of medications for insomnia can be quite dangerous and addictive. I am lucky enough that one of the few non habit forming medications works really well for me, but it doesn’t completely fix or get rid of the insomnia. Also, the medication often becomes less effective over time and I will likely need to keep increasing my dose until one day it just won’t work anymore. These “solutions” are just very common knowledge parts of a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle isn’t accessible for everyone unfortunately, and that is the root of the problem.

Fibre, whole grains, sugar and seed oils are why you have IBS and Crohns. Other than the exercise and stopping smoking this video is worthless.
