I think a lot of Jay Z's success can be attributed to two skills most people in the hood don't exercise: discipline and critical thinking. Jay has always known who he is, stayed true to himself, is confident in his abilities, and isn't overly emotional/hot headed. This audience has a one track mind, is blinded by money and shiny things, and only responds and aspire to things that bring immediate gratification. So the topic of drug dealing is an easy and common one because it's seen as easy money and that's all they know/want.
