Have you upgraded to 4K? If not, what changes would get you to make the jump to 4K?

I bought 4K discs only for new films or films I haven't collected yet on Blu-ray. Of course 4K format has better quality ini picture & sound than Blu-ray, but I think the difference isn't that much. Even for some movies I prefer watching them on Blu-ray although I also have the 4K discs, for example like Bourne, Inception and some other titles.

I am a cinephile, so yes I have upgraded to 4K. I got an OLED TV and upgraded my surround setup to 7.1.4. To me it's amazing that my home setup has better quality than cinemas, and for older movies being restored/remixed: they are better quality than what they would be in the cinema (where as the audio wouldn't be as good and the print would have loads of dust/etc).

They're very affordable now because 4K is on the scene. We'll have to wait for 8K to see major 4K price drops. It should happen because they're starting to push 8K displays, BUT it may not happen because the practical use case for anything beyond 4K discs will only exist for gargantuan screen watching. Should that be the case 4K could stay pricey for quite some time...unless market demands shift.

@@yashwinning facts but from what I understand from people who are experts they all pretty much say that 8k is useless. I mean I’ve seen people game in 8k on high end PCs and I never really heard them talk much about a difference. I think 8k is gonna be a thing to trick normal people into dumping a lot of money into something that’s pointless. I feel like we’ve hit the peak with 4k and there’s no higher that we can go to. I really doubt we can notice much of a difference in 8k
@yashwinning
@yashwinning 3 года назад
@@dominicarroyo6269 No you're right 8k is absolutely useless, it's marketing fluff and you literally cannot see 8k at the sizes they're currently being offered. Even 4k is pointless at anything less than 50". Like you said, we've technically already reached the maximum resolution that the human eye can perceive on sizes so small, and going beyond is pointless. I'm not saying 8k is completely useless but it only makes sense if you're buying TVs over 100" which will never become a thing. I think 8k should instead become a theater gimmick, that'd make a lot of sense. Theaters are already losing to TVs since 4k HDR is literally a better experience than theaters in my country. So 8k would be the perfect new marketing gimmick for gigantic screens since 35mm film is technically 16k and IMAX is around 32k, so in a lot of ways digitally we're still "catching up" to film. Making 8k almost exclusive to theaters would then make people in turn feel like their TVs just aren't giving them the "theater experience" anymore, and make them want to experience 8k in cinemas.

Even though I'm new to Blu-ray of any sort, I have been delighted to see how well my existing DVD collection upscales. I watched the Blu-ray (HD) version of the original Ladykillers film, and then watched the Coen Brothers remake on DVD. My system does such a great job of upscaling that I am not conscious of there being any substantive difference. 4K is different. A good 4K HDR presentation is indeed stunning. The main difficulty is with the pricing, which is utterly bonkers. Many 4K packages have the HD Blu-ray bundled in, which points to the fact that the manufacturing costs are minimal, and charging more for 4K is just gouging the market. If prices were the same 4K would be much more popular.
@alpercinar5490

The solution would be to just include a standalone 4K disc and make it 25-50% cheaper. Only then will I start buying 4K media and I’m sure many other people will do the same.
@periurban

@@alpercinar5490 Indeed. In fact, in the era of instant streaming the only way to make 4K discs popular is to cut the price and add value, but I suspect that most of the companies who might make that work are investing heavily in streaming.

The problem with Psycho is that the original mono is actually a downmix of the 5.1 track. So the supposed mono has new sound effects and isn't what was originally envisioned. The original blu-ray had the option to choose between the original mono and the new 5.1.

@dsr0116
@dsr0116 3 года назад
There's been quite a few re-edits of the movie: the 4K version is supposed to be the best "uncut" version. Whether the current mono track is coming from edited elements used in a surround mix may be superfluous (as digital editing has matured, vs an original mono track of the era highlighting problems with noise, limited DR and FR, etc). I view it just like the restoration of these older movies in 4K: storage of a new digital medium that may have better resolving power and dynamic range than source.....and now a better experience you can have with them at home than what was possible at the theater. I'm not sure how many people are purists for older movies that only were in mono. Most movies made throughout time were in sound formats that were at best stereo or other channels that were behind the screen (even the first digital discrete formats in Sony SDDS: 5 central channels and 2 surround channels). I have found some older movies remixed to Atmos/DTS:X do seem more immersive....but Hitchcock movies like The Trouble with Harry are more involving just due to the great story and visuals.
@heruvim95
@heruvim95 3 года назад
@@dsr0116 They've achieved surround sound by remixing the original track. So they took the remixed version and simply made a mono version of it. It's not the mono that was originally released.
@dsr0116
@dsr0116 3 года назад
@@heruvim95 Yes, but any movie's sound is mixed with multiple tracks....even older mono mixes. A sound engineer takes multiple tracks (say music, dialogue, foley effects, etc) and then mixes to however many channels the delivery system is. My belief is that people may not really enjoy the "purist" approach of having an "original" mono track if it has excessive noise with limited DR and frequency range that's highlighted with modern audio systems.

Absolutely worth the upgrade for the majority of discs, but the most dramatic and visually appreciable reason is for the HDR. The resolution bump and higher bitrate are sometimes noticeable and worthwhile. The HDR benefit is USUALLY noticeable and worthwhile. My reasons for steering clear are mostly psychological. Setting aside the fact that my aging eyes can't really take full advantage, going to 4K would drive me insane. I tend to be obsessive in my disc collecting. I only collect certain titles, and I do loads of research to understand the differences between all the available releases in order to ultimately decide which belongs in my collection. If a significantly superior release comes out later, I feel compelled to get it. That can be expensive; it can also sometimes be disappointing (like when you discover that the 2nd and 3rd cuts of Arrow's Dawn of the Dead release are on DVD). Adding 4K to that equation would be madness. I've found the release I want in HD... but is it going to come out in 4K six months from now? Will it have problems? Will it be superior? Is it a title that will truly benefit from 4K and HDR? Do I pull the trigger or do I hold off? Now the whole thing is less of an enjoyable quest, and more a very stressful project. So as great a format as 4K is, Blu-Ray will be my final format for my remaining years. I'm cutting things off at exactly my comfort level.

Hey Elliot. I just had this pop up in my feed and thought it was new. I think the honest answer is that it depends. I've seen 4K discs in homes with 65" TVs that are poorly set u and they look no better than 1080p. So agree with you there. I've never been in a home (apart from mine) that has a decent Atmos set up. So again, this benefit will be lost. I'd also argue that the increased resolution benefit depends upon screen size and viewing distance. I and fortunate. I have a 150" 2.35 screen and a high end projector along with a large dedicated room that is blacked out and a 7.1.4 Atmos set up. Can I see and hear the difference. Absolutely. Honestly:No it`s not. I have bought and watched some movies in 4K on UHD disc and was mostly disappointed.I really don`t see much difference.Okay,depends on the movie and release.The Shining was brilliant because we have got the full US version for the first time in Germany and it is...don`t know exactly....around 20 minutes longer,and I loved this version.So that is a good release.Also Terminator 2 looks brilliant,but here it is NOT the long-version,that sucks.Yes,some look better,but is it worth to pay twice the price of a Blu-Ray disc for it? No it`s not.I read a lot of reviews before I buy a UHD disc and mostly it`s like : "Blu-Ray picture quality 80% , UHD disc picture quality : 85%". For the same price...yeah,alright,I`d buy them,but double the price? Nope,thanks.

We upgraded to SkyQ last year, and at the same time, our 12 year old, wonderful, Panny plasma packed up. So we went the whole hog and upgraded the TV to a Panny GZ2000. Well worth doing that just for the upscaling it turned out, even though Sky's UHD content is limited, patchy in quality, and the HDR unavailable until later this year. I found 4k streaming very hit and miss. Last week we upgraded our blu ray player to the Panny 820 4k player and this week we received our first 4k HDR disc of 7 Worlds - One Planet........wow, this is what 4k HDR is all about. My upscaled Blu Rays look much better on my new kit, but are noticeably a several notches down on the 4K source material. So I'm now looking at some of the more affordable 4K discs around that I would like to add to my collection. I reckon Passengers and Sully look like a good bet at 2 for £20.

This is a great video Elliot, and I agree with all your points, however, you don´t discuss the cost of the actual 4K releases, most of them are so expensive, how can I justify spending 20 quid or more on a movie I already have on blu ray, just because the picture and sound quality are better, especially when the quality on blu ray is really good any way. Just a thought. Take care mate.
@ElliotCoen
@ElliotCoen 3 года назад
Hey Benn, cheers for watching! Yes they are more expensive but there are regularly deals on here, either 2 for £30 or even 2 for £20 at places like HMV. I typically only upgrade the films I really love to 4K, so for me it's well worth the price of admission. For example, The Shining or Apocalypse Now look so much better than the normal blu-rays to me, it's unbelievable. But yes, cost is definitely a factor so I completely understand :)

@fus149 Hammer Do you even know what you're talking about? The most recent revival of HMV (by Canada's Sunrise Records, which bought up many of HMV Canada's store leases and also just bought FYE here in the States) reportedly had over 100 stores in May 2019 (shortly after relaunch), with at least three in Central London per their website (though one of them is a Fopps, one of many former competitors HMV snapped up on the way down); it ain't just the Birmingham "megastore". Though I somewhat agree as to pixel count (barely noticeable, though perhaps more so with bigger screens) and AQ (Dolby Atmos & DTS:X systems are still relatively expensive & not all films will benefit from them), HDR makes up for that in improved colors & contrast. And though many newer films were shot on sub-4K digital cameras and/or assembled on sub-4K digital intermediates (2K DIs are just barely better than Blu-ray pixel-wise), older movies shot & produced on actual film commonly have better PQ in 4K, and HDR can help even films with 2K DIs. (Most currently believe the "resolution" of traditional 35mm film is around 4K, with 65/70mm film being 8K or better; that could change with the next generation as some used to think Blu-ray was close to native 35mm "resolution".) A lot of 4K fanatics are into older films, where the price comparison on 4K is more akin to what the Blu-ray originally sold for than what it sells for now. (Those people are often OK with Amazon, though here in the U.S. we still have some brick & mortar retailers left, mainly of the "big box" variety as opposed to our version of "high street" in the UK.) Finally, don't confuse proper digital restoration with mere upscaling; while any device can upscale (some better than others) and digital restoration can go overboard on the DNR (was as true early in the Blu-ray era as with T2 4K), a proper 4K digital restoration is wonderful. I have the Columbia Classics 4K set (less than 8,000 made in the U.S.); all six films in the set can be described as either home runs or triples (baseball metaphor apt as it includes A League of Their Own), especially the set's crown jewel Lawrence of Arabia.
@richellebrittain2127
@richellebrittain2127 3 года назад
@fus149 Hammer Excuse me, but I did NOT need a lecture on the history of HMV. I already knew they went bust twice, but I also know they came back BOTH times -- and even now it has FAR MORE than just a single UK location, though not nearly as many as when it had all those competitors. Perhaps the music & video stores of your childhood are gone, and yes less competition generally means fewer bargains; but there ARE still places to buy music & movies -- especially online. And you didn't even try to respond to my points about 4K & HDR as formats. Perhaps I know FAR more about the subject than you do!
@richellebrittain2127
@richellebrittain2127 3 года назад
@fus149 Hammer Well you keep talking back to me with insulting responses as if you were the idiot. Just because HMV closed all its Oxford Street stores (which I already knew, thank you) does NOT mean there is only one HMV store in the entire UK as you keep claiming; I already refuted that several posts back. HDR is NOT "store mode"; it objectively increases the color space AND contrast of home video, NOT just the pixel count. (Indeed HDR is actually independent of pixel count, though it's only been implemented in conjunction with 4K in consumer video.) IMO, HDR is a bigger improvement than 4K itself. You are entitled to your own opinion, but NOT to your own facts!

Great vid Elliot. Love the criticisms of 4K too, totally on point. Still some discs being released with bad DNR, upscales from 2K digital intermediates and fake HDR (SDR in a HDR container). The various HDR formats are confusing for the consumer also. Many classic movies have fantastic 4K releases though like Blade Runner, 2001, Apocalypse Now etc etc. The new Arrow Video stuff is great too, Pitch Black looks fantastic! When done right 4K is by far the best way to experience the movies that we love.

I've never seen a 4K in action but Ive thought about trying them. But I have some stupid questions - Will I see a difference in 4K on my standard flatscreen tv? Its on the cheaper end. Will they play on my Xbox One and will what I play it on make a difference? And do you have any tips in upgrading visual/audio systems cheaply? I love movies obviously but I've always taken the cheapo route when it comes to watching at home. But I'm starting to want to change that - but also I don't have tons of cash so... 😂

Thank you for another interesting video. Last year I bought an 8k TV costing a lot of money, I came home and wasn’t blown away by the difference between 4K video and Blu-ray. Maybe my comparison was incorrect, I tended to compare the Blu-ray disk which came in the 4K box. Would those discs be 4K upscaled? Anyway I have since compared older Blu-ray releases which does show subtle changes mainly in colour and largely the 4K picture is more natural and so provides a better viewing experience. I am a collector of video back in the day - replaced all those with DVD and then upgraded all to Blu-ray and now I find I am doing the same with 4K. The frustrating thing is I try to “justify” every upgrade with a comparison however when I upgraded from dvd to Blu-ray there was a huge difference. It seems we haven’t made the same leap from Blu-ray to 4K. By the way I use an Xbox as my player could this impede my viewing experience? Many thanks

Great video...I'm on the verge of entering the 4K world so am certainly interested in the comments. I'm thinking of getting an LG OLED 55CX model (£1400), plus 4K player (Sony UBP-X700 = £200) and then a decent sound bar (TBC -suggestions? :-)) will round that all up to a lovely £2000. Therefore, I have to ask myself, is that sort of upgrade really worth it from a 37'' Panasonic HD TV with a Blu ray player? I think the decision would be easier if the 4K disc quality was more consistent, but from this video and the comments it seems quality is pretty variable - is that a fair summary? (or, another question would be what approximate percentage of 4K discs are pretty decent, overall?)

Just my take here I think it really depends on what your screen sizes point 1 so if you are watching on a screen lower than 55 inch then all you’re really going to see is a damn good 1080p picture (essentially). 2. It also depends if the film you are viewing was originally shot digitally or on film as with most special effects heavy movies they are still working within 1080p/2K framework Toy Story 4 however is the first movie however that I am aware of that was native 4K. Ultimately I think people need to be aware that the jump between standard def and high def isn’t the same jump as high def to 4K, it’s minuscule at best. 4K is definitely an inconsistent format and that’s down to the factors mentioned above because even though live action shots may be shot in 8.5 K the special effects are still only in 2K then everything is downscaled into 2K and then re-upscaled into 4K and then look like total sh*t (Typically). The usage of HD are however benefits catalogue title is greatly, again especially films that was filmed on film and had a greater emphasis on practical effects. Ultimately it’s down to the end user whether they see A benefit and whether or not it’s a worthwhile investment for them. I’m surprised you didn’t mention Disney and how they typically like to sound mix on the low side when it comes to Dolby Atmos. Good video anyway, even if we may have differing opinions. Going slightly off topic I’ve never really understood why TV manufacturers have such a big hard on right now for 8K, I mean unless you’re a pro photographer or videographer what’s the point really because there is no content out there to be viewed as such? I would’ve much preferred 3D at 4K if I need to get the Atmos soundtrack with a 3D video presentation. Although technically you can already do this if you own a 4K and 3D release of the same movie and your viewing your content through something like Plex or Emby 😜. Again, just my thoughts and opinions on the subject matter with a slight tangent at the end. Take care everybody and stay safe 🤘

Speaking of the 4K Hitchcock movie set currently being released, I sent one set back to Amazon because "The Birds" was not recorded on the disc. I got a new set and I have seen three discs and "Rear Window" got stuck two times and I had to go back to the beginning and "tool my way" back and got it to play. Tonight I will look at Vertigo and if I have a problem, this set will be sent back too and will not opt for a new set sent to me. I think the packaging is damaging the disc because you need to pull the discs from the packaging and in the process, you scratch the surface. In my book there are limits to 4K success.

Okay. For me I spent around £4k on 1080p projector with screen set up 8 years ago and I love my current set up. So for me it's not a priority anytime soon. Happy to stay 1080p in 2023 and beyond, I don't see a bigger enough difference and I am not for colours popping either. Most of my favorite films are pre 1980's, and I don't think 4k makes such a difference on films made on film stock, for example I saw an appaling/inconsistent 4k release last week of The Exorcist which left me disappointed with 4k and hdr, for me the blu ray of the film looked far more natural.

Unfortunately the studio was lazy and used the same remaster for the 4k version. Also they went ahead and downgraded the audio from a dts hd master 6.1 es track to a 5.1 dts hd master. It was a travesty. The sound field had great scope for a dolby atmos track. Some movies that were filmed from back in the day weren’t created by the best of equipment. Therefore converting certain movies to 4K doesn’t impress me. I purchased The Superman Movie (1978) via VUDU and I was blown.

@@geraldlawson1011 Great point. I have noticed it varies movie to movie.

@Boutique Blu-rays with Elliot Coen What 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray player do you have? I may get either the Sony UBP-X700 or the Panasonic DP-UB150EB! The Panasonic one is the cheapest I can find!

I'm very sceptical about 5.1 and 7.1 and dts this and atmos the other. I just use a (very) high quality stereo audio system and can't imagine these multi-speaker systems sounding better without spending many many times what I have.

Dolby Atmos has nothing to do with UHD discs, regular discs can and do have Dolby Atmos as well. Sure sometimes it's only on UHD disc, but you make it sound that it's only on them.

Hi Elliott, Are you aware that Fopp in Covent Garden have a 2 for £12 sale for Network Studio Canal blurays of old classic British films? I've bought A Town Called Alice, Undercover, Mystery Junction and Bulldog Drummond.

I think it depends on your screen. I have two devices to watch movies. A 55 inch OLED, which is 4k and all that. And a 120 inch screen for my JVC x750r projector, which is 1080p and upscales to faux-K, and not very good HDR, but has EXCELLENT black levels and contrast. Although the OLED is technically superior and can do 4K HDR, movies, (especially letterboxed ones), look downright puny compared to the immersion and over all feel of a solid projector that can replicate the cinematic experience. Years ago I had a 720p projector and upgraded to a 1080p projector thinking it would be a great advancement. I was wrong. That 720p was brighter and had better contrast. The resolution was just one aspect of the image and not even the most important one. Same is true with 4k now. I could upgrade, but it's not worth it when 1080p on a good machine is really so great for the home environment.

Im like an extras fanatic so if 4k not got as i have read then may just stick with dvd and blu ray to watch extras anytime.

Having a cheap 4k in the living room and a Q9fn in my room theres a huge difference in picture quality. It also depends on the movie youre buying if it supports dolby vision or regular hdr10+ and dolby atmos. 4k is worth it. 4k discs are worth it but if youre on a budget digital 4k is still better than 1080p imo.
