Short answer? Hell yeah, but watch the video to actually know why. IPS Patch: www.romhacking.net/hacks/876/ Budget Builds' video: • Ordering the CHEAPEST ... Twitter: / f4micom Yes, those are plastic chairs.
I'm not gonna lie, I love these carts. They're just cheap flashcarts. The US Gold, Silver, and Crystal carts hold 2 MB worth of ROM data, so if you're looking for one to rewrite, those are the best option. They can be rewritten with Insidegadget's GBxCart pretty easily. Saving on these carts is super interesting. Instead of saving to SRAM with a battery, these ROMs are hacked to write directly over the ROM chip. They essentially modify the ROM on the fly. If you dump just the ROM, the save will stay present. If you write a retail copy of the game's ROM to the cart, saving will not be functional without a battery installed, which is pretty easy to install with a bit of soldering on that big spot on the right side of the PCB.
I have been doing research trying to discover why they seem to fail so often, this is the best explanation that I've heard, thank you. I am assuming they go with the ROM re-write method as a quick and easy fix to eliminate the need for a battery.
@@pandoranbias1622 That's what I figured. Most cheap products just care about making it past the return period. You can easily wire up a save battery of your choosing and write a retail ROM, though. I ended up using my bootleg Blue cartridge as one with a full-color ROM hack with GSC sprites, it worked pretty well, but failed a couple years later.
Do you have a source for this? I've not heard of a game being able to essentially rom hack itself as a means to circumvent storing save data. Would be very interested to hear about how this works.
I’m not 100% sure if that’s what actually was happening, but I certainly only dumped the ROM, and when I launched the ROM in BGB, my save was present. I believe when I tried to save, the game would simple hang in an emulator.
A few notes: Slide the top part of the shell down to unlock it before lifting instead of prying it open. These cartridges contain patched versions of the games that copies the save data from SRAM to flash every time you save, and back from flash to SRAM on startup. A normal game will not have this extra code patched in, so it will lose the save data when you turn off the power. You can still flash the game onto the cartridge using a flasher, it just won't save reliably. The flash chip used in these cartridges have a lower voltage rating than the 5 volts used by the Gameboy. While they are more reliable in the sense of not needing a battery, this will probably increase wear on the flash chip, and I would not rely on it to hold a save forever, especially when used a lot.
dang i was looking around youtube for battery less original Pokémon game repro and now at least i know they exist, because the one i bought about a year ago eats the battery in about a week
Hi, f4mi. I've been watching your videos recently and I found it very useful. You covers topic not everyone in the scene does, like this one. I would like to ask if you can test these games on a nintendo 64 game pak. I'm wondering if these counterfeit Pokemon cartridges will work with Pokemon Stadium 1 or 2. I've searching the entire internet and apparently no one upload a video of it. If you can made it, I would really appreciate it. (Sorry for the grammar, spanish is my native language).
I currently don't own a physical cartridge of Pokémon Stadium but it technically should work since it is seen by every device I have used as an original cart, by reading the content of the ROM
so whats the machine they use to make these cause i have one of the game cartilages from ali express also check the bottom part is there a hole there cause mine does so whats the website that sells those at cause I'm curious on how they make copies without issues on the overall game play
Well yes its worth it, i did buy my cib pokemon yellow and silver for 2.50 euro each several of my other gameboy pokemon games i either got free or really cheap. I recall everybody who owned a gameboy back in 1998 owning one of the 3 pokemon games. And now people pay 100s of euro's for those cartridges? they just beg you to buy a repro at this point.
I bought a Red and Silver repros back in 2016, they were pretty good. However, the clock for Silver didn't work, it was frozen. The saves also last a good of time, my Red didn't reset until 3-4 years later, and Silver 2-3 years later.
Wait are you serious? How does this work? Do you just put a .nds file on an r4 and put the repro game into the GBA slot? Does it register original gb games, or only gba?
@@calebfox1584 I remember is burn2solt and there is other but i don't remember the name. I know you can do this with gba games but i don't know if it is possible with gb games.
I had bought two repro pokemon yellows, knowingly. first one was really glitchy. at first it wouldn't save and then the text started glitching out, then oak was a glitch spot, then pikachu was just a black square with lines and then it wouldn't boot up at all. The second one works really well but the save battery didn't last long
So it fits in a DS if you put it in a GBA case, so you are able to rewrite it, I was thinking, can we put a Gameboy Color rom and test it in a regular (fat) Gameboy ? (With a normal GB Color Cartridge it can't fits in, I have curious about what this will do)
something i noticed about these budget carts. Since they don't use battery backed saves and more an emulator style "Save State"and as such the clocks in the Gen 2 repros don't actually function properly and only progress when you play.
9:14 omfg! When I was a kid, me and my family were in Turkey and I picked up an early translated version of Pokemon Crystal... THAT version of it. What is the name of that IPS/where can I find it? We returned the game because of the bad words the day after picking it up lol. Even at age 9 or 10 I mostly thought it was kind of funny (being a South Park fan amongst other things for years prior). I have been wondering about it every now and the though. How long into the game does it go, and how much more bizzare does it get lol
These, would be some of the only feasible option at the moment, as the real ones can cost you a bit of money nowadays. Do have all of the genuine ones i got a few a years ago (save for yellow & green, as the latter is only in japanese). Though i do have a fan translated version of green, was making nice progress in the save but the save in it, bit the dust which was a bummer. So i play it on my phone, this fan translation being the one you had shown (the one with the 1995 copyright date start screen text being the green color & the like, a nice version it is). But yes, it isn't that reliable, so if you'd be getting one of these, but keep in mind your save data can get wiped at any point, if you aren't too bothered about the save going at any point, then get yourself one of these cheap ones. Otherwise, i wouldn't bother because of said reasons. You'd be better off getting the ROMS for the games, getting an emulator for whatever device you have (pretty much everyone has a computer and/or mobile device that can emulate GB, GBC & GBA games) and is far more reliable that way. Once again, just know the risks of getting these knockoffs. Might be a good price yes, but might not be worth getting at risk of losing your save, like i had.
A while back I bought a Pokémon Yellow about a year and a half ago from Etsy, It plays fine. But if I have Pokémon stored inside the PC and I save data, they become corrupt. The stored Pokémon will become permanently corrupt if I save again. To avoid corrupting the Pokemon, after saving, I just turn my gameboy off then back on and continue on playing by just saving once at a time when the Game is on.That's how I beat my PKMN yellow repro. Another problem is that I can't use it on a transfer pak. So I won't be able to use it on Pokemon Stadium for N64 :( At least recently I was able to fix my Authentic Pokémon Red! :D
Lol I bougth a sealed copy of rithm heaven on amazon for like 9 euros not to long ago xD Only to realize after watching the other video that it's not the one that was released in the west but a Japan exclusive .. context matters 😅
if well made i would almost say a bootlegh can be better for not requiring a battery to keep the savefile, except games with real time clock cause they dont keep time without battery. btw super Game Boy Enhanced games, like Pokemon games bring there own color palet and borders on the card for the Super Gameboy to grab, the proper green border only means the hack is well made, its hack for Pokemon Blue that recreates Pokemon green, it still uses the SGB enhanced color pallets for blue btw i would keep the Green one, maybe reflash it with a newer version of the same Hack, cause having a translated Pokemon Green is pretty cool
WHATS THE SOUND EFFECT YOU USE FOR THE TRANSITION FROM YOUR CHANNEL ART TO THE VIDEO PLEASE THAT WAS MY TEXT TONE IN 2012 I FORGOT WHAT IT WAS FROM I NEED TO KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't mind getting these reproduction carts of a pokemon Gameboy color game or pokemon hacks of cartridges because if they can save your game and they don't need batteries then I think its okay to own them because if you have an authentic pokemon Gameboy color game or Gameboy advance the ones that require batteries to save eventually when the battery runs out you lose your save file so of course you would need to get a new battery to replace it which I wouldn't want to do I would just get the reproduction carts if I want one but of course because they don't require battery replacement.
When you take gameboy cartridges apart just slide them down before pulling them apart. There shouldn't be any snap sounds at all. Nice and smooth. So slide and open. Poor cartridges.
I stay away from reproduction carts, because they're not officially made by Nintendo. But for a casual fan who loves Pokémon, they do worth for their cheap price because they won't know the real differences in hardware.
Aren't the SGB borders in the actual ROM itself, not the SGB? Though I was never sure which way it was for the color palettes in the SGB/GBC/GBA. Also, is intentionally buying pirated copies of games, that are no longer printed, really all that different than just pirating it yourself, especially when that money is going to a dictatorship?
You should try putting these games into a ds. Wait why wound that work? How about you put the motherboards into a gba case first. Why would that change anything?
You're honestly better off buying a flashcart. I picked up the Everdrive GB X3 for $39 off of Krikzz and have no problem capturing or trading pokemon with access to the complete GB/GBC library.
no it is not just buy the ez flash omega are where you can load roms from a sd card you lose you save data it happen too my friend fake copy of fire red the screw mount and you dont feel number stamp on the bottom right off the game
