You can get your own iceberg water for $50, but it is worth it? Iceberg water is said to be the purest water with no trace of minerals. It comes from glaciers that have massive pieces of ice that break off and then they can be harvested under very strict quality conditions. The iceberg is melted and bottled without coming into contact with any impurities in order to preserve its natural qualities. I decided to do a blind test to see if I could tell the difference between the $50 water and your average premium water bottle you can find anywhere.

Have you seen an ice sample core? There’s not just crap in them, there’s literally nothing in them but water,m from thousands of years of snow. The only mineral being bicarbonate from CO2 in the air making iceberg water the most acidic drinking water when you test its pH. If there were any other substances in it, the water would become more basic like all other waters, and that simply isn’t the case

Do you know what pisses me off? Back in College for my International Marketing class final we were tasked to create a mock product and justify how we could sell it and why. I created a water bottle company that would melt icebergs and justified it due to the snobbery of some people. I legit had to justify why I should not fail and pass that class, since my professor thought it was a ludicrous idea and it would never sell. It never really interested me to pursue it, nor did I have the means to do it, but cool.

I had a similar project for my engineering capstone course, and my professor was an academic who had never worked in the field and was a hermit and knew very little about niche markets. I get where you’re coming from but the reason why people are complaining about icebergs melting is that they’re melting because of climate change, leading to continuously rising sea levels. It literally doesn’t matter that they’re melting ice if they’re putting it into bottles for consumption. Now the logistics around the whole thing are a different topic and I still think that this product existing is incredibly stupid, I’m just pointing out that the melting of an iceberg itself doesn’t really have any consequences if the sea levels aren’t rising

Actually if you drill to access super old ice, like from way before we ever existed, it is almost pure. This packed ice forms by evaporation of sea water and this process removes most impurities. So there are tiny trace amounts but nowhere near the concentrations found in most other water sources. The story changes in never times because young ice sheets will contain newer pollutants like Caesium from nuclear testing and such. This is why ice is so amazing, we can drill into it and discover concentrations of various different things that tell us what the air used to be like going way back. We can also see carbon content so we understand how polluted the atmosphere was before we were here. It's truly fascinating. But the claim they make is valid. Dense packed ice from very deep is almost pure

Or you could just run some grocery store distilled water through a 30 dollar amazon deionizer. It would actually be the purest water you can get. There's a reason we use water that's been distilled and deionized in the lab and not bottles of iceberg water. Also don't regularly drink "pure" water that's been distilled or deionized. Regularly drinking pure H2O is really bad for you since there are no electrolytes and minerals that your body needs.

I once went to the Columbia Ice field (Glacier tour in Canada) and I brought a water bottle to fill up the glacier water that was running there. But obviously unlike that water, it had something called rock flower in it which gives you diarrhea.

I haven't done any bottled water taste tests, since I have a multi-stage filter with activated charcoal to remove off aromas. It's the one step below the reverse osmosis systems, because my water comes from a well and I'm just trying to remove the iron flavor since the soil in my area is red clay. The water is quite clean from most contaminants because of this, but the iron content can be quite high. I like my water relatively soft but without any off flavors. If I can taste any minerality then it means I need a new filter. Under-sink filter systems are great for encouraging you to drink more water.

I think the reason the berg water tasted different is because it is truly pure water. Most water companys use underground water streams and bergs well... came from and icebeg.

Yeah, which is a bad thing. You want the water to travel over rocks and stuff like that because that's where all the actual hydrating minerals and stuff comes from.

i always thought it was weird, but according to water sommeliers higher grade waters are supposed to have a bit of an aftertaste and taste harder. its probably not that pure, as icebergs and glaciers have some degree of minerals in them (if anything, some of the bottled waters are probably purer due to the way they get their water by evaporating then condensing it). pure in the sense of being clean of other stuff, not pure as in unfiltered.
