Funny thing the mind is! I have more than 4 decades of administering cognitive tests to individuals as a Medical Social Worker. I was in a therapy room as a patient (I had administered several assessments over the previous decade with a lady who couldnt couldn't recall names of family or what she had eaten for breakfast and had Dementia among other cognitive concerns). The lady heard my voice and recognized it, we made eye contact, shared a smile and went on our way. The Next time we saw each other she approached me asking 'Have we met before? I know I know you from somewhere?' The expressions on the faces of PT, ST and OT as well as DON were priceless. '( I had worked in this facility and knew her history, she had Dementia). Meeting a person where they are was something that has guided me well through the last several decades and administering routine assessments was one of the tools I used. I responded 'Well you look familiar to me too but I don't recall from where.' Now in my opinion, the therapists are outstanding therapists and good people. The lady experienced a view change that day and instead of just doing the routine that had been ordered by a doctor she started to provide positive encouragement to others.

It is heartbreaking to watch the mind decline in a loved one. It is so important to start your day gathering your gratitudes and humor to start each day. How important is the day month and year for someone who no longer has to keep up with work and school schedules? How important is it to know who is currently president, if you have never been interested or talked about politics in general your whole life?..... Safety, feeling loved and cared about, feeling included are all much more important. Laughter, remembering old times are just as important. Love them for as long as you have them, take breaks to keep your spirits revived. Accept help, if it is not offered ask for it in specific ways. Be pliable like clay, modify as needed. People with dementia cannot help it. Practice and pray for the patience and courage and strength that loving kindly someone suffering dementia requires. Realize that there may come a time your loved one will need around the clock care....something that no one individual can provide 24 hours everyday. It is a very hard road sometimes, search to find the blessings in everyday things. Some things that happen aren't funny at the time, but you may be able to see the humor in the situation at a later time. May you all be blessed during this often tragic time. Some things are worth forgetting. They remember other loved ones who have passed away, but forget they have died.....you don't necessarily need to remind them of it, for it is a fresh hurt/ pain each time. I learned this in practicality. When Mom would say for instance "I wonder how Mary is doing, I haven't seen her for a while"...... Instead of reminding her that Mary had died and that I had taken her to the funeral. . I felt it more appropriate to say, " You know I haven't seen her in a while either, I will check up on her". And just leave it at that. Also they don't always feel they are the age they actually are..How pleasant for them that must be.....You don't need to remind them, it can be a big shock to them, what does it matter. Love, kindness, caring and safety are the most important things.....and that requires taking care of yourself and recharging your own batteries from time to time.

When a person starts off with a high level of intelligence - it can take more digression before these tests show a change. My mom is one of those. However it was helpful for us to see that while she was making changes, she was still good to be at home. We were given time to make plans for her, however, knowing that we clearly saw her changing. It's been 2 years now - and just this week she wasn't able to do math in her head. She could still do math and had no idea what day of the week we were at and had lost concept of time. The mind is a very curious thing.

My mom has been making me really scared because she keeps mentioning to me that she can’t remember a lot of things lately, like for example she’ll buy me a new dress and a week later she’ll be like where did u get that dress, or she won’t remember going out at all. This made me feel a bit better. She’s gone through a lot in the last two decades, one thing after another with no break, so I think it’s just anxiety and stress taking a big toll on her.
@zuzuspetals9281
@zuzuspetals9281 3 года назад
It might be a good idea to give her one of these tests. People who notice they are having memory problems and mention it often are aware of the issues of early dementia. Her forgetfulness seems to be more than stress since she even forgot going out shopping much less buying the dress for you. Maybe she’d be willing to let you go with her to a doctor appointment to check her memory and screen for mini-strokes, medications that could cause memory issues, depression/stress that you’ve mentioned, or forms of dementia that could be helped with medication, supplements (like B12 or iron), or behavior modification (like reminder notes around the house and large calendars). The Alzheimer’s Association has a lot of free information on their website to help you if you need it. (My mother in law had dementia and I’ve run a caregiver support group for 15 years).

Most of these questions may depend on whether they are exercising their brains or not. Unfortunately, many are only able to spend time watching TV or "staring at the wall" in different facilities, and aren't encouraged to "work their brains". My 87 yo Mom in law is pretty sharp! Her husband is somewhat slowing down. She is pretty active and reads a lot (Nursing journals/was a nurse) and biographies, etc. (not many romance novel-type books). He does some to a lesser degree, but may be affected by medications.

What happened when loved one passes the doctor test but is very confused? My mother passed the test at doctor but next day she has no idea where she is. Tells people she talked to people whom are long dead. Can’t remember where bathroom is, but doctor said she passed the test. She calls everyone by the wrong name, she thinks she is living in a house that was torn down 30 years ago and wants to live with her sister that died 20 years ago, but the doctor said she passed the test. She go scammed out of $9,000 the same woman whom would send a $25.00 check wrapped in paper when sending in the mail, but mailed $9,000 in cash. She tells me she drove here and there and drives all the time, yet we took her car 4 months ago. The simple tests are not reliable.

I have to bring a sticky note just to remember the one thing that my daughter wanted from the store, is somebody says hi and I say hi back or whatever happens on my drive there I get to the store and immediately forget what I was supposed to get for her, not the exact thing but she wants a certain colored box of food not the red but the blue.

My mom is 84 and neurologist did brain scans and says they show pre-dimentia/AD. Everyone can tell she has problems with memory. But there are other symptoms, like she stopped being able to control the tv with a controller with direction buttons, up, down, left, right. She stopped being able to relate the directions to moving the highlight box on the tv interface, like from one show to the next show. She wants to move the box left but can not make the connection that the left button is how to do it. I'll show her, then she'll get it. But within an hour or day she's right back not being able to remember. That seems to me not a simple matter of loss of working short term memory. I'm so worried about her, she's chronically dehydrated (she refuses to drink water) and I'm convinced this is only making matters worse. We can all tell she's getting worse. But she totally refuses to admit there's anything wrong more than slight memory loss which is normal for someone her age. She's falling down regularly, has fallen 7 times in the last 12 months. She has to use a cane to walk around now. I just read the medicine she takes for overt active bladder, solifenacin, makes dementia worse in some patients.

Dont worry, you will forget 2020. How do I know? Well, in 2020 I learned that most people are unaware that we have been in the midst of several pandemics for years, decades even. HIV is alive and doing quite well. Heart disease is killing most of the world population every year, followed by kidney disease. Let us not forget cancer and the flu. Familiarity does not cause a disease to drop out of the category of pandemic. Sadly, most of the time, heart and kidney diseases can be prevented or cured by changing a diet (drop the animal products and ease way way back on the salt). Your vascular system (which supports your heart and kidneys) is good at healing but scar tissue in your kidneys is there for life. There is a high probability that many cancers can be prevented by diet as well. I am not sure that poverty is on the pandemic list, but I think it should be, but that is just my opinion while the other issues I listed are well known to the medical world.

"Blessed" could be someone's surname. So I looked it up and... The Blessed dementia scale (DS) was developed in 1968 by Blessed and colleagues in an attempt to quantify the “degree of intellectual and personality deterioration” (p. 799) in the elderly. I guess this means I don't have dementia, if I could figure that out.

This is a great reply to the video, and much appreciated. It is always interesting to track down the origins of these tools that are used to evaluate us. What stands out the most (to me) is that the (Blessed team) developers of this "evaluation tool" kept it simple, and Bob & Brad support that concept, too. So, thanks to you for going the extra mile and looking it up in order to give us all a better understanding.

I am thinking these questions are biased towards audio learners. I have always learned best by seeing text. Give me text or picture and I’ll remember those images. Tell me about them and whoosh, in one ear and out the other.

You can fix anything? This was informative but you guys didn’t mention that meditation has been proven to improve memory EVEN in dementia patients!

Just make sure they have good vision, hearing, and the cognitive test is in their native tongue to get the most accurate result! Also obviously don't expose them to the test frequently for an accurate measure, i know after Trumps MoCa was released we were pushed to using the slums as the amount of people who searched the MOCA surged like an astronomical percentage

Best if testing is done by an OT or another health professional who adheres to the way each question is asked, and specific scoring criteria. I recommend asking your parents’ MD’s to administer a test during an office visit. They might want followup testing or imaging done. I’m an OT. A test is a starting point. Consider safety/judgment during the whole 24 hours. What an eye-opener it was for me to spend occasional overnights with my very elderly parents... At work, my favorite, well-researched test has been The Clockface Drawing, using scoring criteria. It’s non-threatening, quick. Visual-perceptual errors are related to fall risk, etc.

Whats the difference between dementia and brain injury? Are they related? Does one leed to another? Do other cognative issues mimic the symptoms of dementia? This subject is a spectrum of symtoms at many different intesities and severity. Please dont asume tgat "dementia" is realy just a symptom of interconnected cognative damages and/or injuries. These tests are more or less used to help identify the severity of the symptoms, the possible rate of progressiveness and to help ccreate a targeted prognosis treatment. And honestly i think these two should stick to what tgey know insteas of coming up with video content to kepp their 2million subscribers happy. Im sorry, i mean 1,999,999 subscribers. So long youtuber hacks! Best of luck to ya both!!! 😇😎😈

What? Are you serious about this? Of course a brain injury is not related to dementia..
